But for working professionals Rupa Patil and Bernard Corrayya, this was just not done. And so it was that the couple got together a bunch of like-minded people to form Weekend Nuts, a casual group of working professionals who come together every weekend to celebrate their weekends in a unique and creative way, and when possible do their bit for society as well. Weekend Nuts is the brain child of Rupa, a 32 year old electronic engineer who is original- ly from Mumbai but settled in Bengaluru for the past seven years. Her idea received the full sup- port of Bernard, a 30 year old sales professional who is originally from Kolkata and who has lived in Bengaluru for over seven years. Finding that they shared similar interests, the two friends (now married) nurtured their dream project of Weekend Nuts, initially in a small way given their hectic weekday schedules. The group proved wildly popular, and today attracts large numbers of enthusiastic corporate profes- sionals and others who join them in the many creative activities they organise every weekend. Rupa says that idea first came to her when she was invited to speak on 'creative weekends' at Ignite Bengaluru 2008, an event for corpo- rate professionals talk about and discuss all kinds of topics that interested them. Says Rupa, "It was from the feedback I got there that Bernard (who was then a friend) and I realised that a large number of working professionals in the city typically spend their weekend lazing or roaming around. There were many who wanted to do something creative, but lacked the direc- tion to do so. We decided to do something about, and in February 2010 we came up with the idea of Weekend Nuts, and within just three weeks turned it into reality!" Rupa says that the basic idea was to bring together young working professionals who had common interests and get them engaged in many activities including creative work and community service. Weekend Nuts has since organ- ised activities like Smiley Days, Photography Contests, Excursions and Day Outs, Poetry with Wine, Wine-tasting for Amateurs, Ghazal evenings, i-for-ideas (an open speech event), Scooter Rally for ladies, and many more. Among them, Smiley Day- which was all about spreading smiles in the faces of needy - espe- cially clicked with the corporate crowd, say Rupa. She explains that apart from her interest in travelling and public speaking, community service has always been a passion for her, which prompted her to design a weekend activity designed around it. So they have conducted ten Smiley Days in the course of a year, which has proved to be one of their most popular activi- ties. As of today, Weekend Nuts boasts of over 600 members in Bengaluru and the number keeps growing. Membership is open for all who love to spend their weekends doing some- thing worthwhile or cre- ative, and there is no reg- istration fee involved, although members are expected to share what- ever cost incurred by the particular activity. In the year 2010, Weekend Nuts was short- listed as one of the top 850 ideas by the Economic Times in under their Power of Ideas 2010 feature. It's about six months ago Rupa and Bernard are happily married. This couples are still continueing their passion of involving with their brainchild Weekend Nuts. Marriage has not stopped them engaging these activities in their weekends. Hats off to this couple. Apart from founding members Rupa and Bernard, Weekend Nuts has a core group that consist of Vipin Vinchurkar (chief events man- ager), Soumya Gopi and Priyal Date (Smiley Day specialists) and Samuel Raj (photography specialist).
