Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
Pray for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.
The final protection of God’s chosen is affirmed in
today’s Liturgy of the Word. In the world, the
illusion of triumph and success for those concerned
with their daily life over those that sacrifice for the
well-being of others is common. The rich appear to
become richer just as the powerful seem to be held
unaccountable for their crimes. Through
manipulation, lies and bribery, the “privileged” class
surreptitiously garners worldly mammon at the
expense of the poor and gullible. Their success is
temporary and will not follow them into the next
world. Only through Divine intervention will justice
prevail. Today’s Scripture reasserts that Jesus is the
Good Shepherd and in conjunction with the Will of
the Father continues to protect his “Sheep”.
In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Paul
and Barnabas proclaim the Good News of the Christ to
the people of Antioch. This invitation to the pagans
enrages the Jews who think of themselves as the only
“Chosen People”. The disciples of Christ explain that
the Jews, once they rejected Jesus, opened the doors
of the Kingdom to all who would accept the Gospel of
Jesus. Quoting Scripture, Paul and his assistant claim
they have been instructed by God to deliver the
message of salvation and, in return, our driven from
the city by prominent men and women. Nevertheless,
these disciples rejoiced in their eviction and continue
onward to spread the Gospel.
In the reading from the Book of Revelation, the
success of the Good Shepherd is prominently revealed.
Here, John discloses a heavenly scene where
multitudes of every nation, race, people and tongue
clad in white robes after experiencing earthly
sufferings during the “times of great distress” stand
before the Lamb. This revelatory scene affirms and
asserts the belief that God protects His own. Despite
worldly persecution and suffering, the Divine will
intervene and brings to final victory those who remain
faithful to the Shepherd.
Today’s Liturgy of the Word concludes with the voice
of Jesus who, in the Gospel by John, proclaims this
final victory. Christ affirms that His Sheep hear His
voice and follow Him. Using this bucolic language,
Christ creates and depicts an intimate relationship
between Himself and His disciples. This relationship is
so intense and intimate that it even extends to the
Father. Because the Father and Son are One, in
Christ’s own words, the “sheep” are guaranteed
Divine protection for they, too, are one in Him.
Our liturgy leaves us with an undeniable truth – God’s
protection is omnipresent. The Church reminds us,
today, that despite whatever evil may present itself to
us, God will be there to protect us. His help is like a
shepherd’s. He is willing to bear us up, sooth our ills
and tend to our ever need. As His “Chosen People”,
we are called to listen to Him and to follow His voice
no matter where it may lead. Holy Mother the Church
desires us to be the “first” Christians of our modern
world. We are expected to follow the Father’s Will
and reveal His Light to it. The mammon of the world
is temporary and no person, no matter how powerful
or rich, takes their wealth with them into the next
world. Rather, those of us who refuse the glamor of
today will stand before the Lord in our white robes
“washed in the Blood of the Lamb” victorious in the
end. The earthly wealth, fame, power and pride is
transitory and amount to nothing; however, the Word
is eternal and promises us eternal life and happiness.

SAINTS OF THE MONTH:
OUR LADY OF FATIMA May 13 Between May 13 and October 13, 1917,
three Portuguese children, Francisco and
Jacinta Marto and their cousin, Lucia dos
Santos, received apparitions of Our Lady
near Fatima. Our Blessed Mother asked
them to pray the rosary for world peace, for
the ending of World War I, for sinners and
for the conversion of Russia. She gave them
three secrets.
The first concerned devotion to the Immacu-
late Heart of Mary. The second was a vision
of hell. Pope John Paul II was directed to
reveal the third secret in the year 2000. It spoke of a "bishop in white" who
was shot by soldiers with bullets and arrows. Many have linked this secret
with the assassination attempt against him in 1981.
The message of Fatima is simple: to pray unceasingly and to imitate with
humility Our Lady's response, "Let it be done to me as you say."
In honor of Mary’s month, we will be
PRAYING THE ROSARY before the weekend Masses during the month of
May. Please arrive about 30 minutes early,
if you wish to participate in this special devotion
to our Blessed Mother.
