about $39,275. This includes a down payment on the build-
ings, city fees, planning fees and a contract with Pacific Pow-
er. Site preparation should be in early May.
We still need at least $15,000 more to help finish this pro-
ject. So, if you are getting a tax refund, perhaps you could
consider donating it to this project!

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
With the commencement of the
Resurrection, Holy Mother the
Church ceases using Old
Testament readings for the first
reading in the Liturgy of the
Word. Signifying the beginning
of the New Creation, the Church
looks at the readings from its
birth, the Acts of the Apostles,
for guidance. For quite some
time, the Word of God reminds us that through
Jesus Christ our redemption is found and all of
creation has been restored and order has prevailed
through the will of one man – Jesus. It was his
acceptance of the Will of the Father that mankind
was raised in status – a divine status in the image
of God.
The first reading from the early Church that we hear
proclaimed is from the Acts of the Apostles. Today’s
passage reveals a person, Peter, transformed by the
Resurrection. Formerly, he who denied Christ, now
proclaims him vehemently and proudly. What has
effectuated this transformation? Only the
intervention of the Spirit could explain this total
reversal. As Peter reveals, certain people were
granted permission to receive and witness the Good
News. It is this news, God’s forgiveness and mercy,
that is available to all who receive and accept Jesus
as the Savior. This acceptance would place all who
acknowledged it in opposition to Roman emperor
who simultaneously was proclaiming himself as the
Savior. Thus, the early Christians were presenting
themselves as “revolutionaries” opposed to the
world and its ways. The road forward for this new
sect is portrayed as problematic if not even self-
destructive. Total faith and commitment is
demanded.
This innovative and problematic way of life required
by Christians is the theme of the second reading
from the Letter of Paul to the Colossians or Letter of
Paul to the Corinthians, an alternate reading. Paul
tells the Colossians that they have “died” to this
world and rest, now, in the life of Christ. The Apostle
to the Gentiles affirms the reward that faith in the
Good News will bring for
those who remain faithful.
Likewise, his message to the
Corinthians employs the
image of the ways of the
world as being “old yeast”
used in pagan celebrations.
Now, the missionary
proclaims Christ as the “New
Yeast” of sincerity and truth.
It is the Christian celebration of the Eucharist that
celebrates the Resurrected Jesus who brings new
and eternal life to those who participate in faith,
sincerity and love (agape).
Finally, in today’s Gospel the power of an
individual’s faith is reflected. In John’s account,
Mary of Magdala goes to the tomb while it is still
“dark”, reflecting the hopelessness experienced in
the loss of the savior. She sees that the tomb is
empty and returns to tell the apostles that the body
has been stolen. Both Peter and John run to the
tomb and notice that no signs of theft are evident.
Rather, everything is in order: napkin folded, burial
cloths rolled and present. It is this evidence that
causes them to “believe” even though they did not
“understand the Scripture that he had to rise from
the dead.” Finally, the importance of faith and the
Scripture is found in the afternoon’s Gospel by Luke
where the resurrected Jesus’ explains the
application of Scripture to Jesus’ life. It is in the
fulfillment of the Scriptures and the role of faith that
the eyes of all are open and belief in the resurrection
made possible.
Today, Holy Mother the Church calls us to faith and
action. The Great Paschal Mystery restores order to
our life and our world. It is only through the
Resurrection that God’s intimate union with man
can take place. As Christians, we, too, are called to
reject the world and all of its temptations and follow
the road of the Cross. Sufferings and humiliations
will be experienced, just as they were for the early
Christians; however, we will experience a glorious
resurrection and a life of eternal happiness in
return.

SAINT OF THE MONTH:
ST. MARK April 25 Saint Mark is the author of the oldest and shortest of
the four gospels. His gospel emphasizes Jesus'
rejection by humanity while being God's triumphant
envoy. He is mentioned in the book of Acts when
accompanying St. Paul and St. Barnabas, but
returned home before the end of the first journey.
Although St. Paul refused to take him on his second journey, St. Mark did visit
him later when St. Paul was in prison. St Peter called St Mark his "son" and
was one of the sources for St. Mark's gospel. Mark is thought to be the first
bishop of Alexandria, Egypt. Venice, famous for the Piazza San Marco, claims
Mark as its patron saint; the large basilica there is believed to contain his
remains. A winged lion is St. Mark's symbol. The lion derives from his
description of John the Baptist which artists compared to a roaring lion. The
wings came from Ezekiel's vision of four-winged creatures.
