Stage 1 Excursion – Henry Kendall Cottage

In Week 7, Stage 1 travelled to Henry Kendall Cottage in West Gosford to discover some local history through our History unit ‘Present and Past Family Life’.

We participated in 4 different activities, in which we were able to explore not only the cottage but the property also as well.

We started off by sketch drawing the cottage itself. The students came up with some very clever drawings. They were able to walk around the cottage and understand its structure to draw small details including the wooden shingled roof and the sandstone blocks used as bricks.

Next, we headed inside the cottage itself. The students had a great time exploring inside, looking at the different rooms and decorations the cottage had to offer. We learned that the cottage was built around 1895 and went through many different upgrades over time until the present day. As there was no electricity during Henry’s stay in this cottage, he managed to light kerosene lamps and light a fire to keep warm.

The students then headed into the museum, where we saw so many things that looked familiar. Our guide talked us through how old telephones used to work at the exchange and even how some irons needed coal and fire to run – making for some very dirty clothes! The students were able to walk around the museum and discover some local historical artifacts including typewriters, musical instruments and even old fridges and tools.

Finally, we headed over to the Slab Shed – where all the farm machinery and tools were kept. The students learned about old engines and farm equipment, which helped source Gosford’s local export – oranges. Our guide showed us the progression of technology from back in the 1800’s right through to 2016.

A very special thank you to Mrs Jackson who organised our Stage 1 excursion and the opportunity to learn first hand about our local history outside our classroom. Also thanks must go to all our wonderful parent helpers who made our excursion very fun and helpful for our teachers!
