Week 6 Principal’s Message “If you have a strong commitment to your goals and dreams, if you wake up every day with a passion to do your job, everything is possible.” Chantel Petticlere Values Assembly – Participation Last Friday, we held our first Values Assembly for 2020. I was very proud of all the students who were acknowledged for their wonderful effort in the value of active PARTICPATION in their school work, extra-curricular activities and application to learning tasks. Thank you, to Mr Smyth, Mr Mitchell and the tech team for the developing our new Student Copa News (SCN) channel which links to our value of Participation. Thank you to the school leaders and to Mrs Walters for organising this special assembly. Young Leaders Day On Monday 2nd March our Year 6 school leaders attended the Young Leaders Day at the National International Conference Centre Sydney with Mrs Woodham. They enjoyed a wonderful day with many inspirational speakers who presented at the conference. Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews – Save the date! This year our parent/ teacher interviews will be held during Monday, 30th March to Friday, 3rd April. Our class teachers will schedule the times they are available. There will be opportunities for interviews to be held before school and late afternoon. These will be at the discretion of your child’s teacher. To help with the organisation of the interviews, this year we are again using the online booking system. A note will be sent home in the near future outlining how to access and log on to make a booking. Selective High School Placement Test The Selective High School Placement Test for registered Year 6 students will be held on: Thursday 12 March 2020 from 9:00am to 1:30pm. We would like to wish our Year 6 students the best of luck as they sit the test on Thursday 12 March for 2021. The allocated test centre for Copacabana students is: Terrigal High School Charles Kay Drive TERRIGAL NSW 2260 Duty of Care- Supervision/ Collection of Students at Home Time Parents are asked to inform the school about any changes to arrangements regarding who may or may not collect students from school. This applies particularly to younger students. In most cases a known parent, relative, carer or friend collects children from school day to day. It is requested that you inform the school by phoning the office, not through the REMIND app. Teachers endeavour to keep a check on which adults are collecting students but in the busy and congested time at the end of the school day, it is important that teachers have the correct information if they are any changes to normal pick-up routines. Staff Leave Mrs Woodham will be on Long Service Leave from Monday 9 March to Friday 20 March. Mrs Narelle Ryan will be teaching 5/6W whilst Mrs Woodham is on leave.

Copacabana Community Support It is an incredible testament to the strength of our school and wider community that we can support each other during times of family challenges This has been most evident in support of the Fraser family. On behalf of the family, I sincerely thank you for the overwhelming support you have shown them in so many ways. Yours in education, Mrs Mary Hunt Principal

disagree if their opinion differs.

How can I encourage my child to write?
Read your child’s writing or have them read the
writing to you and comment on the positive aspects,
for example “I really like the way you’ve described
this.”
Praise your child for having a go at writing words that
are new and explain how to spell words, which are
causing difficulty.
Talk to your child about why an author or filmmaker
might create a book, play or film in a particular way.
What points of view are presented? What is the
author’s purpose?
In order to develop spelling and vocabulary, play
word games such as I Spy, Scrabble, Boggle,
Scattergories and crosswords.
How can I help with writing at home?
Have your child label things that he or she designs or
makes.
Compile a photo album or scrapbook with your child
and have them write captions for the photos and
pictures, or encourage your child to keep a diary of
special events e.g.: a holiday.
Build a climate of words at home. Go places and see
things with your child, then talk about what has been
seen, heard, smelled, tasted and touched. The basis
for good writing is good talk, and younger children
especially grow into stronger control of language
when loving adults – particularly parents- share
experiences and rich talk about those experiences.
Let children see you write often. You’re both a model
and a teacher. If children never see adults write, they
gain an impression that writing only occurs at school.
What you do is important as what you say. Have
children see you writing notes to friends, letters to
business firms, perhaps stories to share with the
children. From time to time, read aloud what you have
written and ask your children their opinion of what
you’ve said. If it’s not perfect, so much the better.
Make changes in what you write confirms for the child
that revision is a natural part of writing – which it is.
Be as helpful as you can in helping children write. Talk
through their ideas with them; help them discover
what they want to say. When they ask for help with
spelling, punctuation, and usage, supply that help.
Your most effective role is not as a critic, but as a
helper. Rejoice in effort, delight in ideas, and resist the
temptation to be critical.
