They did an excellent job outlining what Anzac day meant to them. The RSL was represented by Mr Jerry OBrien and he was very complimentary about the whole ceremony. I would also like to thank the students who marched for Cootamundra High at the parade on ANZAC DAY. Noah Trickett did an excellent presentation at the beginning of the traditional ceremony at Albert Park. I had the privilege of taking our school captains, Noah, Claudia, Sarah and Tim, to Sydney last week for the annual Student Leadership Program at NSW parliament. The students had a really great day learning about the role of parliament and then were taken to Government House to meet the NSW Governor, Mrs Marie Bashir. The students spoke very highly about the whole day, especially their interaction with the Governor. Our final carnival (cross country) was held on Thursday and once again We saw many students trying hard to achieve their personal best and will go on to represent Cootamundra High at Zone, Regional and possible state level. Next Tuesday the SRC will be having a planning day to develop ideas for the school and some future directions of the SRC. The input from Aria Holmes (our State SRC Rep) will be invaluable. The quality of our student leadership continues to grow and these young men and women can be very proud of their efforts and achievements. Students continue to gain representation in Riverina Teams with Kya Godbier being selected again for the NSW Soccer talent camp. Keeping Kids Safe

Students have now received their revised timetables for Term 2 which may include some teacher and room changes. Year 11 have completed their half yearly exami-nations and Year 12 will be commencing their examina-tions in week 9. The onset of cooler weather has resulted in winter uniform being worn by many of our students. The wearing of our school uniform promotes a positive school image in the general community. It helps students maintain high per-sonal standards, high self esteem and promotes school pride and tone. If your child has grown out of uniforms we welcome your donation to our clothing pool.

School procedures Absence from School If your child arrives late to school or is absent they need to bring a note signed by a parent or guardian. The note needs to clearly explain the reason for the absence. Note: if a student plans to be absent for an extended period then a certificate of exemption from attendance at school ap-proved by the principal is required. Late to school Students need to report to the front office to obtain a late pass and then proceed directly to class. Leaving school early Students leaving early need to bring a note signed by their parent or guardian. The note needs to clearly explain the reason for leaving school early. The note is to be pre-sented to the Deputy before school. An early leavers pass will be issued upon leaving the school. The pass is picked up from the front office. The police or Home School Liai-son Officer may request to see the pass if required. Out of Uniform If your child is out of uniform students are required to bring a note from home. If assistance is required in acquir-ing uniform please contact the school.

Year 7 were recently addressed by the Police Liaison Officer Senior Constable Vanessa Cochrane, on their responsibilities if they are to make use of the myriad of social media sites available to them through the inter-net. Officer Cochrane also spoke about the penalties which could apply for inappropriate use of text mes-sages and photographs.

A key component of the talk was how to ensure that they were safe when using the internet. During the talk some very sound advice was given to the students. Officer Cochrane also had advice for parents. It was strongly suggested that the family computer should be in an area where parents could supervise and see what their child was doing. Often when child has experienced serious problems because of the internet, their parents had no idea what was going on.

Other good advice was that parents should know their child's password and be their "Facebook friend". This will allow you to see if your child is placed in danger as a result of their internet activity. There have been many cases of children placed at risk because of their contact with paedophiles or undesirables and the man-ner in which these people have taken advantage of vulnerable or naive adolescents.

Some parents may question whether there is a need for their child to have access to "Facebook" at all. Many of the disagreements which we see at school are initiated out of school because of issues with "Facebook". If your child receives threatening or obscene material it is important that you keep a record of the material and let the school know so that the matter can be dealt with. We do request that parents do not involve them-selves in trading insults with the perpetrator as this can only cause the problem to escalate

In serious cases, as Senior Constable Cochrane made very clear, there can be very serious consequences for inappropriate use of the social media.

PERFORMANCE – THE WALL

Year 10 Drama are in the final stages of rehearsal for their production of the play, THE WALL which will be presented on Tuesday 15th May, Wednesday 16th May and Friday 18th May at 7.30pm. They are putting this play on to assist students in India at P.Udayapatty Marist High School to buy a com-puter to help in their study of English. Their teacher, Mr McLeod, spent a week teaching at P.U. in January and he arranged for students at that school to write to the students in the class. That correspondence is now under way with the first letters written and received. P.U. has very poor facilities compared to our standards and our class felt that we should assist them if we could. Cootamundra Rotary Club has jumped on board and are catering for an Indian meal before the Opening night (Tuesday at 6pm in the hall). All proceeds going to the project. For this performance the cost will be $20. The other two performances are at 7.30pm in the Drama room and will cost $5. The play we are performing is a sort of reverse Romeo and Juliet story which is very funny and thought-provoking. For the past eight weeks the students have been hard at rehearsals and have succeeded in put-ting together a very interesting show that the whole family will enjoy. The cast urge all parents and friends who would like a great night out at live theatre, and who would like to help raise the money for a computer for a needy Indian school, to come to one of the performances. But be quick. The opening night is filling rapidly as will the other performances. Tickets are available in person or by phone from the office at the school.

Soft Drinks

Excessive soft drinks a danger to health.

Sydney researchers from the Westmead Millenium Institute for medical research have identified precursory signs of car-diovascular disease in children as young as 12 who have a high intake of sugary drinks. While further studies are required, the study leader, Bamini Gopinath stated that it should be regarded as a "warning to parents and children to cut down on carbohydrates and sugar."

Narrowing of the retinal arteries was identified as a very ac-curate indicator of cardiovascular disease and was observed in those children with an intake of more than 274 grams of carbohydrate a day, typically those children who consumed one or more glasses of soft drink each day.

The nutritionist, Rosemary Stanton, stated that the research added to evidence that consum-ing soft drinks was bad for overall health. While we would hesitate to see children stop drink-ing soft drinks completely they should be consumed in moderation and young adults should treat the so called energy drinks on the market in particular with extreme caution.

Looking for something really different this Mother’s Day?Is your mum tired of receiving slippers and white goods?

This is a great opportunity for her to enjoy an exceptional performance.

One moment the music is dark and ominous, the next it flies high on adrenalin. Don Giovanni loves the thrill of the chase. He can outrun a jiltedlover and dodge a jealous boyfriend but a figure from beyond the grave? That might stop him in histracks.”

Mozart’s popular opera is subtitled in English and will be screened in Cootamundra Tin Shed Theatre.Doors open at 2pm with screening beginning at 3pm. Please be seated before 3pm as the doors to thetheatre will be closed. Tickets will be available from Kevin Deeps Clothing or at the door if seating isavailable.
