From the Principal’s desk…
With the end of term here, we reflect on the
successful term we have had at Ungarie Central
School. There have been outstanding
achievements in the classroom with learning at the
forefront of every single day. There have also been
great achievements on the sporting field, both in
teams and as individuals. Well done to our
students and staff for the effort they put in to
everything they do. Term 2 looks to be just as busy
and exciting as term 1 has been!
Well done to Angus and Hugh Williams who swam
at the CHS State Swimming in Sydney this week,
both setting some PBs. Noah Bryant, Harry
Roscarel, Kate Jackson and Caitlin Rossiter swam
in the Dobson Relay at the PSSA State Swimming
Carnival today, finishing 17th out of 27. Great
effort!
Thank you to those parents who attended our
parent-teacher interviews last week. There were a
great number of parents meeting with primary
teachers however it was disappointing to see the
lack of numbers at the secondary meetings. We
hope to see more parents at our term 3 meetings.
We would like to wish Mrs Sonya Ward all the best
as she begins her maternity leave. Miss Amy
Hopkins will be filling in for Mrs Ward for Terms
2 and 3. Welcome Miss Hopkins!
Mrs Rachel Jackson has been at ‘Excellence in
Primary Industries’ training this week in Dubbo.
She is enjoying her time touring local farms and
learning new skills, knowledge and techniques.
A group of year 9 students are enjoying a week in
Sydney as part of the ASPIRE program. You’ll find
pictures of their trip on our Facebook page.
It has been an exciting week for us here at UCS. We
are part of a Teach.NSW initiative to promote rural
education. Selected staff were interviewed and
some classes were filmed. We look forward to
seeing the finished product later this year.
On Tuesday, Mrs Mason and our primary students
held a successful mini concert. Unfortunately, I
was unable to attend due to filming, however I
have heard rave reviews. Well done to the students
and Mrs Mason!
This year, ANZAC Day once again falls in the
school holidays. We would like to see our students
join Ungarie Central School in the community
march on ANZAC Day, 25th April, at 10.45am.
We invite all parents and community members to
our Ungarie Central School ANZAC service on
Friday 4th May 2018. The service will begin at 10am
in the school hall.
The school cross country will be on Friday 4th May
at 11.20am. Parents are welcome to stay after the
ANZAC service to watch our students run. This
year we will be starting at the school, not the
recreation ground.
We hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable
break. We look forward to seeing our students
return to school on Tuesday 1st May.
Until next term

Week 11, Term 1.
K/1/2: Samuel, Shay-Lee, Olivia and Nicholas.
Year 3/4: Lila, Caitlin, Alex, Tyler, Evie, Hannah, Gus, Darcy, Tahlia, Lara, Lachie and Rachel.
Term 1 is almost finished and I am sure our students are
ready for a break. This has been a very busy term not
just with the usual learning taking place but also with a
colour run, a reward morning tea, a mini-concert, the
Easter Hat Parade, a film crew and numerous sporting
events. Our students have taken every opportunity to
represent their school through good sportsmanship,
polite manners, a happy face and trying their best. Now
it is time for a well deserved break.
Thank you to those parents who came to see us on
Monday and to those who have made alternative times.
It was great to touch base with you all. Anyone who
couldn’t make it and would like to see their child’s
teachers don’t hesitate to contact us.
Next term students return on Tuesday, May 1st. On
Wednesday we will have our PSSA netball team playing
against Toppy school and we wish them all the best.
Friday the 4th we have the ANZAC Day Assembly at
10am-11am followed by the UCS Cross Country at
11.20am. A busy start! Enjoy your holidays.

In Yr 7/8 Science, we have been learning about Earth in Space. Part of this unit looks at rock types and formation,
and processes involved in changing rocks and Earth surface. One of our activities was to follow instructions to make
a geode. A geological geode is a mass of minerals within a rock that can take thousands, even millions, of years to
form. We used borax and egg shells to make colourful geodes in two days, using a saturated solution and the
processes of sedimentation and crystallisation. We were very happy with our results!

Throughout Term 1 the students studying Sport, Leisure and Recreation in Year 11 have been completing a unit on
Aquatics. Part of this course involves them achieving their Bronze Medallion from the Royal Life Saving Society. On
Wednesday 21st March, Daniel Potter and Kayla Bradley completed the practical examination for this award at the
pool in West Wyalong. They had to successfully swim 200m in less than 6 minutes and then perform a number of
rescues, demonstrating a variety of techniques on humans and mannequins. Students then demonstrated CPR with
1 and 2 operators. To finalise their award Daniel and Kayla have completed a workbook of theory activities and will
sit an exam on this information.
