Things to watch for…What is the relevance of article to the topic you are researching?Article is supposed to be about the topic of GlobalizationNot an article where globalization is mentioned 1 or 2 times!

Danger Will Robinson…Summarizing a current events or newspaper article can be somewhat “trickier” than summarizing information from a text.

Can’t see the forest principle

Many of you may get “caught up” in a story or vignette that is being used to illustrate a much larger point.Look at the “BIG” picture!

Practice, I’m talking Practice!

Create a SUMMARY of approximately 5-7 sentences on the Thomas Friedman Op-Ed on Globalization.Write down on the front of the note card.

The Heat Miser PrincipleSome of you are like Heat Miser in that you want to put way too much detail in your summary.Others are like Snow Miser in that you want to put in way too little information.

The Shakespeare PrincipleMost (all)? Quotes should be eliminated.Quotes generally are put into an article to illustrate a point made previously!Can be an exception where a small part of quote is excerpted.

The Cut & Paste Principle

You do NOT have to use all of the authors own words in a summary!Extreme Cut and Paste method can be difficult for reader to follow.Sometimes taking matters (words) into your own hands is the best course of action.

The “Pretty” Lady PrincipalSome of you are using descriptive adjectives such as “pretty” and “affable” to describe people in your summaries.Is this essential information to the reader’s understanding?

Combine when possible…

Instead of writing daisies, roses, and tulips – why not combine the 3 by using “flowers”!
