Dear Parents and Carers,

How lovely to be back!! The staff and myself are delighted to see the children again and we have lots of exciting learning experiences planned for your children. Oak, Cherry and Hazel class have already had a visited from Clive Pig - who transformed into an Anglo Saxon.

Welcome to our newest families in Foundation Stage. I look forward to meeting you during your induction meetings and over the coming term. We are a fully inclusive school and we pride ourselves on our trusting, warm and positive relationships with parents. Our doors are always open and we have a range of very experienced and professional staff who can be contacted for meetings via the school office.

Parents and carers of pupils in year one to year six are able to meet class teachers, next week after school. Please check Dates for Diaries at the back of this newsletter.

Communication! Communication! Communication!

At Laira Green we aim to keep parents fully informed with day to day information via class newsletters, parent mail and weekly updates on the school website. Please ensure your contact details are up to date!

Class newsletters will also be added to the website under ‘Newsletters - class newsletter’ tab.

We have included some useful information within this pack, such as:

Class Welcome Letters and Learning Leaflet.

New academic year calendar.

Clubs for 2016 - 2017

Current school menu.

All documents, as well as useful forms, are posted on the school website - lairargreen.com

WHOLE SCHOOL REMINDERS!

School Uniform: We are proud of our smart children and would like to remind parents of the expectations regarding uniform.

School shoes, not trainers, must be worn. Children can change into trainers at play and lunch times to avoid scuffed shoes. Girls can wear boots to school on rainy days but then must change into school shoes.

Girls need to wear socks or tights. No leggings please!

Collared shirts, not polo shirts, and ties must be worn at all times.

Shirts need to be tucked in! Belts for boys would help with this!

Shoulder length hair must be tied back!

PE Kits: white t shirt with Laira Green logo, white shorts ( optional black shorts for Year Five and Six). In the cold weather children can wear a black sweatshirt and black jogging bottoms.

I would like to add that all visitors comment on how smart our pupils look and the above list is simply intended to clarify a few grey areas that pop up every year!

Water bottles: Please purchase a school water bottle from the office as they are more stable and do not leak over tables or childrens work. If your child needs a drink during the day they can use their school water bottle or the water fountains. Opaques bottles are not permitted.

Playtime snacks: This policy have been in place for a number of years now and it is an integral part of pupils making healthy choices for playtimes.

Fresh fruit or plain biscuits, such as Rich Tea or Digestives are permitted. Cereal bars and fruit type sweets are not permitted.

Fresh Milk: The school has signed up to ‘Cool Milk’ which means your child can have a carton of milk for 12 pence every day ( approximately £6 per term). Please see Mrs Bryan in the office to set this up.

Foundation Stage, Year One and Two all receive a free piece of fruit per day and the under fives receive free milk.

Punctuality: This was greatly improved last year and the Governors wish to say thank you to everyone for supporting the school to reduce lateness.

Morning registration starts at 8:45 am when children will be led into class by their teacher.

The teaching day ends at 3:00pm which means children will be still be learning at 3:00pm. It will take approximately 10 minutes for the children to collect coats and organise themselves but they should be in the playground by 3:10 pm. School staff will help younger children to do up their coats and collect belongings, but as you can appreciate this takes time.

Behaviour: Children are sent home immediately if they use foul language. Parents who swear on the school premises or within earshot of children, ie around the school gates and on the playground, will be asked to leave the premises. Consistent use of bad language will result in a ban from the premises and a meeting with myself and school governors.

Safeguarding: The school needs to be secure at all times and this is especially important at the end of the day. Can parents please leave the school grounds by 3:15 pm so that all school gates and doors can be secured. After school clubs are running and we need to ensure that nobody can enter the school during this time. Thank you!

Here’s to a successful and fulfilling new year!

Miss D Bailey

Headteacher Respect Believe Achieve

‘I have very good news that your school has now passed the HCQM Silver Process, which we were able

to complete the Quality Assurance Process, upon, over the summer period.’

Michael House - Healthy Child Leadership Associate

We have successfully achieved the Healthy Child Quality Mark - Silver. This was awarded due to our

collaborative learning and teaching project which involved all staff and pupils at the school. The focus of

our project was healthy living. Our allotment played a large role in achieving this award - the judges were

very impressed with our ‘Plot to Pot’ project where children taste and cook with produce grown on the

allotment.

Thank you, Mrs Hughes for leading this project! Next step - the GOLD award!!

An Anglo-Saxon at Laira Green.

Clive Pig came into school this week to inspire us in our topic work and in our writing. He told us all about the Anglo-Saxons and retold the story of Beowulf and Grendel. He is an amazing storyteller and all the children were completely captivated. We then had a workshop thinking about how the Anglo-Saxons might have felt on their journey to England and what it might have been like when they arrived.

All the staff busy at work on Monday and Tuesday, getting ready for the return of all the

children.
