CHAIR NOTES Dear ACS Members: ACS co-sponsored an event with San Diego State University on April 17th. This event featured Dr. Jeffrey Bada from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, giving a talk titled "Prebiotic Chemistry and the Origin of Life on Earth, and Elsewhere?" We had a great turnout of current students and SDSU alumni. Our co-sponsored university events have been very successful this year and we look forward to continuing to reach out to local students with similar events in the future. I would like to thank Tom Beattie (San Diego ACS) and Bill Tong (SDSU) for coordinating the event. We have some exciting events to look forward to in the coming months: We hope you were able to attend our May Monthly Meeting about chocolate and learned about the history, chemistry, and even health benefits of chocolate. One of you may have won the 10 pounds bar of chocolate. Our annual ACS picnic is coming up soon on Sunday, June 29th, at San Dieguito Park. Please bring your whole family! The day will include an excellent BBQ meal courtesy of Jim Shih and loads of activities for the kids, including a bounce house. Thank you Jim Shih for planning this fun event! Please register at http://sdacs2014picnic.eventbrite.com/ The 16th Annual Medicinal Chemistry Symposium will be taking place on Friday, July 18th, at the Price Center Theater at UCSD. The event will feature high-profile industry and academic speakers. Please check out next month’s newsletter for more details. Thank you to Tom Beattie for organizing the Symposium on a yearly basis. All of these events are made possible by the generous contributions of our event sponsors such as Biotage and Kelly Services. In addition to event sponsors, we have launched a new fundraising effort this year to help support our many outreach efforts that are offered free of charge to the public. I would like to extend a special thank-you to Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Pfizer for their generous support. The Executive Committee Meeting on May 1st featured tastings of three sherries. Every Executive Committee Meeting this year will have a theme, featuring a different tasty treat! Great Chemistry: Coast to Coast! Housing Open for Fall National Meeting

Housing reservations are now open for the upcoming 248th ACS National Meeting, which will take place August 10-14, 2014, in San Francisco, CA. Due to high expected demand, housing has opened earlier than usual for the meeting. Save money, get the best rates and rooms now! The San Francisco meeting theme, "Chemistry & Global Stewardship," is focused on global aspects of the chemical enterprise related to sustainability of world resources, including green chemistry, the globalization of chemistry, and the responsibilities and opportunities chemists have to serve the broader public. We are figuratively "painting the town green" and look forward to seeing you there! Here are 8 more great reasons you should join us in San Francisco this August.

JOINT MEETING OF THE ACS-SAN DIEGO SECTION AND SDSU CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AT SDSU On April 17th we held our monthly meeting at SDSU, the second ACS/SDSU joint meeting. Dr. Jeffrey Bada, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a chemistry graduate of SDSU, was the featured speaker. His talk titled "Prebiotic Chemistry and the Origin of Life on Earth, and Elsewhere" focused on his major research accomplishments during a distinguished career at SIO.

The turn-out was excellent. SDSU students (many from the SAACS), faculty, some chemistry department alumni and even some Emeritus Professors (including two who knew Jeff as a student) attended. Bill Tong, chair of the Chemistry Department, was our host, and Dean Stanley Maloy welcomed us on campus.

CHEMISTS CELEBRATING EARTH DAY 2014

The San Diego ACS participated in the Balboa Park EarthFair, an annual forum for environmental education, awareness and celebration. EarthFair has been held every year since 1990. More than a fad, EarthFair seems to have become an institution. In two separate years since then, estimates have placed the number of visitors at more than 70,000. See : http://www.earthdayweb.org

Our theme this year, The Wonders of Water, included our good friends and ACS member at Give Clean Water. The ambassadors from Give Clean Water, Rodney Stramel and Andy Lovsted, organized a demonstration of the water filtration assembly used in their work. Rodney Stramel created the poster describing the scientific principles of the device, and Andy Lovsted organized the table and volunteers for the event. Give Clean Water’s non-profit mission is giving clean water filters to all on earth who need it. See: http://www.givecleanwater.org

The local Girl Scout Troop 8455, going for the Girl Scout Silver Award, described the water filtration apparatus throughout the day. An ACS CCED publication was distributed and an experiment on surface tension of water, described in the publication, was used as a hands-on activity to engage children. ACS member Jianxia Ciu and her daughter also joined in the fun.

4th SABPA/ACS Chemistry Symposium

Monday, April 7, 2013, marked the 4th SABPA/ACS Chemistry Symposium. The event was held at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP with more than 150 people attending to hear talks given by Professor Barry M. Trost, of Stanford University, and Dr. Nicholas A. Meanwell, Executive Director, Medicinal Chemistry, Bristol-Myers Squibb. In his presentation titled “The Alkyne Strategy For the Synthesis of Bioactive Targets”, Professor Trost started the lecture by introducing us to the question of atom economy to minimize waste, energy, and consumption of raw materials. He then explained how to achieve atom economy through the use of elaborate zinc-ProPhenol-catalyzed direct asymmetrical aldol reactions and nonracemic ruthenium cyclopentadienylpropyl complexes to synthesize natural products such as (-)-Lasonolide A (completed in only 16 linear steps and 34 total steps) and Bryostatin analogs, 3 and 19.

Dr. Meanwell’s talk was titled “The Discovery of HCV NS5A Replication Complex Inhibitors: Daclatasvir and Synergists”. He talked about how phenotypic screening was used to identify mechanistically novel iminothiazolidinone leads against the GT-1b Hepatitis C Virus. Dr. Meanwell then presented the evolution of the SAR of the unsymmetrical initial leads, BMS-858 & BMS-824, to the symmetrical stilbene and alkyne analogs and then finally to the highly active and selective Daclatasvir. He then ended

his presentation with the development of a compound which works synergistically with Daclatasvir to prevent resistance. The whole presentation gave an amazing story of the birth of a first-in-class hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A replication complex inhibitor.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank all volunteers and sponsors of the event: Pfizer, ChemBridge, Quark, Biotage, Teledyne Isco, our distinguished speakers, and the attendees for making the 4th SABPA/ACS Chemistry Symposium another successful event.

Dr. Barry Trost, Professor, Stanford University Dr. Aaron Burns, co-organizer, introducing Prof. Trost

CONGRATULATIONS TO PROFESSOR BARRY SHARPLESS!

2014 Cotton Medalist

The San Diego Section of the American Chemical Society wishes to congratulate one of its members, Professor K. Barry Sharpless, on receiving the 2014 F.A. Cotton Medal for Excellence in Chemical Research. This prestigious honor, established in 1994, is awarded annually by the Texas A&M University Chemistry Department and the Texas A&M Local Section of the ACS. It is named for the late Texas A&M Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, F. Albert Cotton. The award is not restricted by gender, country, or field of chemistry. Dr. Sharpless is the W.M. Keck Professor of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. Among his many contributions to synthetic chemistry are his work on different stereoselective oxidations (now known as Sharpless epoxidations and Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxy- lations) and "click" chemistry, which today has applications in such wide-ranging fields as the modification of natural products and pharmaceuticals, drug discovery, and the selective labelling of biomolecules in biological systems. Among his many other accolades, Professor Sharpless shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001. Last year he was recognized by the San Diego Section as a 50-year ACS member.

CHEMISTRY FOR YOU AND YOUR KIDS

FOILING SPOILING

Other important food additives are used to preserve foods so that bacteria and fungus will not grow on them as fast as they normally would. Some foods change color because of a chemical reaction they have with the oxygen in the air. This reaction is called oxidation. There are certain chemicals that can be added to foods to slow down this chemical reaction. These chemicals are called antioxidants.

You will need

Paper towels - 4 sheets of paper - Potato - Banana - Apple - Lemon -

Water - Butter knife – safety glasses.

1. Spread paper towels over your work area. Ask you adult partner to help you cut three pieces each of potato, apple, and banana to about the size shown. Also, ask you adult partner to cut the lemon in half.

2. Place a sheet of paper on your paper towels and put the pieces of potato, apple, and banana on the

paper in rows and label the rows as shown.

Nothing Lemon Juice Water Potato Apple Banana

3. Do nothing to the first piece of food in each row. Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice on the second

piece in each row so that the whole surface of the piece has lemon juice on it. Put a few drops of water on the third piece in each row so that the whole surface has water on it.

4. Label the column on your piece of paper as "nothing," "lemon juice", and "water" as shown. 5. On a separate sheet of paper, make a chart like the one below but make it big enough to fill the whole

sheet. Each box is for you to draw a picture of the food and write down your observations about how it looks.

Be sure to wash your hands when you finish. Lemon juice can sting your eyes! 6. Wait about one hour and look very closely at your pieces of food. In each box, write down any changes

you see in the food in that box. See if you can draw what each piece of food looks like and the changes you see happening to each piece, if any.

Make at least two more charts to record your observations at 12 and 24 hours. Did the lemon juice act as a preservative?
