Dear FriendsWe are in the time of the year when the legal formalities of the Church of England are addressed. The Annual Parochial Church Meetings need be held by the end of April; Wardens and Sidespeople are sworn into office at the Archdeacons Visitations in May; and the Annual Report including the Financial Statements must be submitted to the Diocese and Charity Commission.Whilst some of this legalese can be rather draining, they are also important to show the church is acting responsibly and transparently. We are grateful to Ian Scott the PCC Treasurer as he completes the 2016 accounts and steps down after several years of committed service.All this also ties in with the need to lay out plans for the future year and beyond. We are being strongly encouraged to facilitate church growth, where numbers worshipping at our services increase and those worshippers then grow closer to God and explore the gifts they have and how to offer them in God’s service.Included within our plans this year are: Thy Kingdom Come’, a prayer event initiated by the

Archbishops of Canterbury and York, there is more information about our plans for this further on in the magazine;

As Colin and Beryl mention in their notes we have received our report following the five-yearly inspection of the church fabric (QQI Report) which requires attention;

A Crib Festival is also being planned for December and more details will be released through the autumn;

A Stewardship campaign, probably in the autumn to teach about and encourage each member of the church to consider afresh their personal giving to God’s work here at St Cuthbert’s.

It seems fitting that this season of formalities concludes as we celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost is the point in the Christian Calendar when we celebrate the church’s birthday and are reminded how the Holy Spirit inspired the first Christians in witness, discipleship and daily living. The Holy Spirit brought renewal to a community which recognised that Jesus was the Son of God, but were struggling to work out what that meant.I firmly believe that for the church to grow, or even exist, in the future we must be open to the Holy Spirit. Yes, we can still be diligent in completing necessary reports and having a framework of policies in place; we can make plans for events and moments in the future – but if we do this without an openness to God they will not have Godly results. There will be moments when what we plan will be lost and other times when things seem to happen almost without our input as the Holy Spirit directs or plans.The church is the plural of disciple (or Christian) which makes it a very exciting community to be part of, because when two or more disciples meet together then Jesus is with them by his Spirit. So, let’s make good plans in line with Jesus teaching; seek to be complicit with the regulations of the current age and be open to the Spirit of Pentecost to breathe new life into the Church of God.Yours in Christ,Nick

Churchwardens' NewsOur Annual Parochial Church Meetings will be taking place around the time of the publication of this magazine. Hopefully, most of the positions of P.C.C. officers have been resolved, BUT that doesn’t mean there isn’t something YOU CAN DO. Please look around and offer to support in whatever way you can – it will be greatly appreciated.The Quinquennial Report about our Church has been prepared and received. There is some more work to do to maintain the building in good order. We shall undertake this work as soon as possible, following quotes, etc. – especially with Summer weather being more suitable for outside work.A working party would be useful to weed and tend to the lavender border and other flower beds around the Church. Please contact Colin on 07811 361 238 if you could help with this.The Confirmation Service will take place on Sunday, 21st May. It will be lovely to welcome our Diocesan Bishop, Julian, together with Revd Ann Wood from St John’s and Revd Dr Adrian Burdon from Lytham and St Annes Methodists, with us to celebrate new members proclaiming their Christian faith. Do come and support those being confirmed.Many magazines carry a comprehensive list of contact details, usually at the rear of the booklet. We don’t at present. May we suggest that if you are involved in any capacity at Church and feel that others could contact you more easily, please inform Fiona at the Office. We take the Data Protection Act 1998 seriously so we won’t include them without your permission.Beryl and Colin

As we discovered in last month’s magazine, St Cuthbert’s is involved in the Archbishops’ Global Initiative and has Pledged2Pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. A team, led by the Vision Champions, has been planning activities and you are encouraged to get involved in as much as possible.It would be fantastic to see friends, families and people from our community come to know the love of God for themselves. And it starts with us. Pledge2Pray for five people every day between Ascension Day and Pentecost, that God will touch their lives and open their eyes to the reality of the death, resurrection, ascension of Jesus Christ and the gift of His Holy Spirit. You can pray for them at home during your own prayers and also come along to any of the following activities.

’What happens when we pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’?A reflection from Ian Adams, Church Mission Society Mission Spirituality Adviser and tutor at Ridley Hall, Cambridge.

To pray Thy Kingdom Come is to pray for a shift in the world around us.It is to yearn for things to be different.To imagine transparency in a culture of fake news.To find compassion in a society that resorts so readily to shame and blame.To long for grace, mercy and peace in an anxious and fearful world (2 John 1.3)But to pray Thy Kingdom Come is first to pray for a shift within ourselves.For this is where the change we seek must begin.To pray this prayer is to yearn to live increasingly in the light of the Christ.

Page 10 of 27

Page 11: stcuthbertslytham.orgstcuthbertslytham.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/May-…  · Web viewPink Panther, 46. The English Patient, 47. Chicken Run, 48. Finding Nemo, 49. The Wizard

It is to commit ourselves again each day to taking the path that is love for God, love for neighbour, and love for the earth and her creatures.It is to assent to the life of God within us.Such a shift will be demanding.Our priorities will need to be examined and re-calibrated.In so many ways we can find ourselves compromised.As much part of the problem as part of the solution, accepting of the ways things are, lacking the imagination or the courage to live in the way of Jesus.To pray Thy Kingdom Come is a costly thing.But this shift will also be freeing.To pray Thy Kingdom Come is to step into the freedom to follow God's call into life and mission in the way of Jesus.There's nothing quite like being who you are called to be, and doing what you are called to do.The monk Thomas Merton wrote memorably of this discovery in his own life:I belonged to God, not to myself; and to belong to him is to be free.As this sense of freedom deepens we may find ourselves yearning for the same freedom for those around us.To pray Thy Kingdom Come now becomes an invitation to others to share the path that we ourselves are taking each day.It is to pray that those with whom we live and work may also be open to encounter with the stranger coming near to them on the road (Luke 24.13-25).It is too long that they too may find their hearts burning within them, and that in time with open eyes they may recognise the risen Christ with them and within them.

When we pray Thy Kingdom Come we are not alone.We pray with countless others praying this prayer around the world and through time.To pray Thy Kingdom Come is also, vitally, to pray with the one who gave us the longer prayer from which the line comes (Matthew 6.5-15).It is part of a personal prayer, formed in the life of Jesus.In praying this prayer we pray with him - and he prays in us.And so we may pray with confidence, and with love... Thy Kingdom Come.

Community Food ConnectionsSt Cuthberts has teamed up with our local Tesco Express on Clifton Drive and Fair Share Food Cloud, to help reduce food waste with a knock-on effect of helping to address the causes of hunger, reduce social isolation and get people back on their feet. Together, we’re trying to squeeze as much social goodness out of every ounce of surplus food as possible.You might be thinking reading this ‘Lytham is an affluent area no one goes hungry round here’. Yes, we are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and affluent town yet we hear stories of people stretching themselves too far financially to be able to afford to live here and sometimes some children do go to school hungry. Having committed to a mortgage or rent everything changes if the bread-winner unexpectedly finds themselves in a position of losing their job., through redundancy or illness. We have hungry visitors coming to church during the week hoping that they can get help because

our church is situated in an affluent area. Older isolated people struggle with no food in their cupboards too proud to ask for help.Fair Share contacted us after hearing about our Community Fridge project and were keen to help support through the Food Cloud programme. From mid-May, each Friday, we will be contacted via a Food Cloud App giving details of what food is available from Tesco. Our Team will decide if the food available that week is suitable for us to use and we can collect what we want, bring it back to church and put it in the Community Fridge for local people to take away free of charge. Through a visit to our Open Church Day last month, a local bakery wants to donate bread at the end of the day which, still usable and in date, would otherwise be thrown away.Any suitable produce left, if not taken by its best before date, will be used to make soups or frozen to lengthen its shelf life.

Remember the fridge is for the Community, if there is anything in there that you could use please take it, or if you want to donate something from your fridge which you’re not going to use, or excess veg from your garden, please bring it along and put it in the fridge.

Our church is well-off, we’re open every day, and we’re committed to the Vision 2026. Consider – how healthy is St Cuthbert’s and are we ready to transform our community bit by bit? As Tesco’s slogan says

Bible Book ClubHave you tried reading the Bible and failed? Too complicated, too long, too dull. Well let’s try and achieve it together. Starting on Wednesday 24th May 7.30pm – 9.00pm Bev will be hosting a monthly Bible Book Club at the Vicarage, there may be a glass of wine involved too. Maximum number is 10 people, so if you’re interested please get your name down on the list at the back of Church ASAP. How will it work? Each month we will read a book from the Bible in our own time and come to the Club to discuss it. For example, the Book of Genesis will take about 3½ hours to read. But it is packed with many stories, some which are easy to understand some are not. Some are believable some are more difficult to get your head round. At the Club we will share thoughts, ideas, concerns and light-bulb moments and importantly learn from each other.If you have difficulty reading, don’t let that stop you, Bev can lend you an audio bible or you can buy your own.If more people want to get involved we will look at organising other groups at different times and places, just add your name to the list. Or why not get your friends round to your home and organise your own Bible Book Club. You can get help and advice from Bev if needed 07742 709 994..

At the April meeting our speaker was Mr. Eric Howarth and his talk was entitled 'Destined to Police'. He explained how from a very early age he wanted to become a policeman and began his ambition by becoming a police cadet. We realised how hard it must have been in those days without the use of mobile phones. He gave us many amusing anecdotes of incidents during his long career. It was a pity that due to illness a good number of our members were unable to attend. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs Julia Bell.

As published in the pew sheet we are struggling for volunteers to help out at the Mums & Toddlers Bertie Bear Club due to the ill health of some of our loyal members. If you could help out perhaps just once a month on a Wednesday. morning with the staffing of this most rewarding and important outreach to the community of our church please contact Margaret Fisher on 737310 or Liz Willis on 728087.

William Cross Cup SponsorshipAli, the Sunday Club and the Uniformed Groups will be taking part in the annual “Club Day Sponsored Walk” if you would like to sponsor them, there is a sheet at the back of church.

Friends of Lytham St Annes Art CollectionOn the Monday 22nd May the Friends of Lytham St Annes Art Collection will be holding a talk from Heather Davis, who was involved in the renovation the Wallace Wood Murals at the front of the Church. Although this will be a ticketed event, I

am looking for a few volunteers to help serve cups of tea and coffee between 2 pm and 4 pm. If you would like to help and would be interested in hearing all about the murals then please let me know. Many thanks Fiona (Parish Coordinator).

Commemorating the AscensionEven before Christianity became a publicly acknowledged religion, the faithful in Jerusalem commemorated Jesus’ Ascension at a site near the summit of the Mount of Olives.

Page 16 of 27

Page 17: stcuthbertslytham.orgstcuthbertslytham.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/May-…  · Web viewPink Panther, 46. The English Patient, 47. Chicken Run, 48. Finding Nemo, 49. The Wizard

In fact, none of the New Testament accounts names the place where the Ascension took place: Luke 24: 51 associates it with Bethany, but there is no reference to location in the other two accounts, Mark 16: 19 and Acts 1: 3. Still, Bethany is in the right general direction, and it is perhaps natural for tradition to associate the Ascension with an elevated position, one, moreover, that figures so prominently elsewhere in the gospel narratives. It seems that at first the practice of annual commemoration took place as part of the Easter celebration: Luke, after all, implies that the Ascension occurred on the evening of the Day of Resurrection. But the account in Acts places it forty days later, and this became the established annual feast-day from the fourth century onwards.Christians in Jerusalem congregated on the Mount of Olives at a spot where they believed two marks in the rock showed where Christ stood before he was lifted up. One of these marks, taken to be that of the right foot, can still be seen there now, although the other was removed to the El Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in the Middle Ages. When Constantine’s mother, Helena, made her pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 326-28, she accepted this as the place where Christ’s feet had last stood on this earth, and she honored it by ordering a circular sanctuary to be erected around the rock, enhanced by porticoes and arches. Unusually, it was open to the sky, as was symbolically fitting for the site of the Ascension. We get a glimpse of the early Ascension liturgy from a Latin text written by a wealthy woman from the western part of the Roman empire who made a pilgrimage around the Holy Land in the 380s. She described how the procession of clergy and people came out from Jerusalem and entered the holy building: ‘that is, the place whence the Lord ascended into heaven, and the bishops and the priests take their seat there, and likewise all the people. Lessons are read there with hymns

Page 17 of 27

interspersed, antiphons too are said suitable to the day and the place, also the prayers which are interspersed have likewise similar references. The passage from the Gospel is also read where it speaks of the Lord's Ascension, also that from the Acts of the Apostles which tells of the Ascension of the Lord into heaven after His Resurrection’.Shortly after this visit, a church was built beside the circular sanctuary. These structures were mostly destroyed in 614 when Jerusalem was captured by the Persian Shah, but fourteen years later the Christian Emperor Heraclius recaptured the city and the buildings were restored. It was this seventh century complex, still with a circular sanctuary around the footprints, that was seen by Bishop Arculf who, on his return home to Gaul, got seriously blown off course and ended up on Iona, where he described the site to Abbot Adomnan (c. 624-704), who used this and other information to write a detailed account of the Holy Places. When Adomnan then visited the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, he took a copy of this text with him, and it formed the basis for Bede’s popular study of the Holy Places written probably around 702-3. From then on, descriptions of the site commonly figured in Ascension Day sermons as a means of engaging the imagination of the faithful.Joyce Hill

QUIZ for May: Ditloid time‘Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date.’ So, wrote Shakespeare in his Sonnet XVIII. Like the buds, you also might be shaken by a further ditloid selection. The word ditloid is an anagram of ‘Lo, did it!’, an exclamation you may like to make when you have solved all fifty of them.

100 ClubTake part in the monthly draw and you could win £100! All profit goes directly towards the upkeep of the church! All you need to do is pay £5 per month by standing order. This buys you a number between 1 and 100. Each month a number is drawn, rather like a raffle, and the owner of that number receives a cheque for £100. There are standing order forms at the back of the church. Or please have a word with me, Debbie Rogerson. I am usually singing in the choir at the 10am Communion service so catch me afterwards or ring 01253 422500 / 07540284517.Congratulations to Hazel Lanigan with number 16 is this month's £100 winner.
