RI.2.9 Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic. Objectives: Students will compare and contrast two Native American Indian tribes after reading texts on each tribe and using a graphic organizer and provide an oral report on the similarities and differences of the tribes. Differentiation Strategies: The lesson will begin with whole group teacher directed instruction. Three passages will be used so that students have different combinations of comparisons. For the lower level (special education and tier 3 readers) the passages will be recorded so they can listen to it being read while following along in the text. They will also work in a small group with the teacher to complete their Venn diagram. The brain pop activities are also read aloud so that the lower level readers may listen as well as follow along to complete the activity. ENGAGEMENT: Beginning in whole group, The students will watch a BrainPOP Jr. video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ypVjCDmAw4&t=283s ) that introduces the concept of compare and contrast. Following the video, I will discuss the concept using an anchor chart (appendix a) followed by a group discussion to create our own Venn diagram (using sports). Assessment: Observation as students watch video and participate in comparing and contrasting a subject they are familiar with. Approved January, 2013

Subject area/course/grade level: Reading and Social Studies, 2nd grade

Materials: Ipad, Chatterpix app, pencils, Venn diagram outline (appendix ), Indian Texts and comparison chart (appendix ), Macbook and promethium board, BrainPOP Jr. video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ypVjCDmAw4&t=283s)

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students): CCR.R.9: Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.

ENGAGEMENT:Beginning in whole group, The students will watch a BrainPOP Jr. video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ypVjCDmAw4&t=283s) that introduces the concept of compare and contrast. Following the video, I will discuss the concept using an anchor chart (appendix a) followed by a group discussion to create our own Venn diagram (using sports).

Assessment: Observation as students watch video and participate in comparing and contrasting a subject they are familiar with. EXPLORATION:

The students will return to their seats where they will sign on to BrainPOP Jr. and take an easy quiz and do a drawing activity on the app demonstrating comparing and contrasting. The students will be allowed ten minutes to explore brain pop’s compare and contrast with games and jokes related to the subject.

Assessment: Observation as students explore the site, take the quiz and do the activities. Screen shots of some of the results will be submitted for review. EXPLANATION:

Back in whole group instruction, I will go over compare and contrast again briefly, reviewing what each means (alike and different) as well as why we use a Venn diagram (appendix b) to show this. I will introduce the topic of North American Indians and relate to the topic of Thanksgiving (as the students are reading other passages on the Mayflower voyage during the week). Explaining that different tribes of Indians lived in different places of North America, wore different kinds of clothing, lived in different types of shelters, traveled differently and worked differently, yet many had things that are alike. We are going to investigate and see if we can find similarities and differences in these groups of Indians.

Assessment: Observation as to the attentiveness and participation in answering questions.ELABORATION: The students will be given two articles on different North American Indian tribes and a corresponding graphic organizer (appendix c) to read an explore. They will then complete a Venn Diagram of their own with the things they find different and the same about the two tribes they read about. After they have read and completed their Venn Diagram, each student will go to the Chatterpix app where they will create a fun face and record their voice to give an oral presentation. These will be shared with the class through airplay on the promethium board.

Assessment: The Venn Diagrams will be assessed for correct comparing and contrasting making sure travel, work, area of the country, and housing are all included in the diagram chart. The chatterpix recordings will be assessed for including all the information on the Venn Diagram as well as making sure they can be clearly. EVALUATION:

A rubric will be designed and used to assess the understanding of comparing and contrasting based on the Venn Diagram and the Chatterpix oral report.
