The GOOD NEWS GAZETTE October 2019 ‘The Riches of His Glory!’ From the Pastor's Desk Pastor Bob Weidmayer "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV Can you see it, the crowd, the people? There's hundreds and hundreds of them. Each and every Sunday we gather in God's house and join in receiving God's riches, respond in praise and thanks with such a crowd. Frankly, I'm surprised we can even find a place to sit! Before you come to check on my mental stability let's pause and consider Hebrews 12:1-2. This is the time of year that we reflect on those who have gone before us in the faith. We remember, reflect and refocus on all that God has done. Why now? Because we are about to begin a new year of God's favor and we best move forward by looking back. Our first vision reveals the "great cloud of witnesses", those who have preceded us in faith and life. They may have departed physically, but our lives are reflected in us! They are so numerous and plentiful that we are literally surrounded! Can you see them?

‘The Riches of His Glory!’

From the Pastor's DeskPastor Bob Weidmayer

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,  looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

Can you see it, the crowd, the people?

What are they doing? Like spectators at a sporting event they are gathered to spur us on. Following their examples, we run the race started long ago, the endurance race of faith. Sometimes it's hard to run. We become so weighed down by the worries and concerns of life. Grief, sorrow, of past events cling to us like mud in our tennis shoes. Uncertainty of the future bogs our steps like weeds clinging to our ankles. Often, we feel like we're sprinting across a beach where every step accomplishes little. That's where this amazing cloud of witnesses spurs us on and encourages us to keep pushing forward.

Every race has a finish line. It might be hard to see, but it is there. In this race of our faith we can see the finish line. The Glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He came into this race and ran the difficult steps in our stead. "Enduring the cross, despising the shame, He conquered and won the prize. He claimed the victory and sat in the winner's circle at the right hand of the throne of God.

Page 2: pumpkinhook.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewHebrews 12:1-2 ESV. Can you see it, the crowd, the people? There's hundreds and hundreds of them. Each and every Sunday we gather in God's

Page2

That victory is ours through faith by Grace. It is God who perfects us and makes us fit to continue striving forward as did that great cloud of faithful witnesses that direct and spur us on each day.

Can you see them? Can you hear them? Are you going to keep running?

Serving Christ with you, Pastor Bob

Preschool NewsLynda ScribnerWe've gotten off to a great start this school year!

The 4's/Multiage class started on September 9th. The 3's followed on September 10th. Both classes are settling into a routine. It is such a joy to see those little faces on Monday and Tuesday morning. They are excited about coming to school and love to learn!

Both classes are looking forward to their pumpkin picking field trips in October. And of course, we’re planning our costumes for our much anticipated Halloween parties...

I'd also like to extend a big thank you to Mary Zuege, longtime Preschool Committee member, and Eleanor Pagano, Preschool grandma, for helping out during those first few very busy days of the school year. Your "eyes, ears and hands" were appreciated by all of us!

Stay tuned for a full report on our Fall activities in the November Good news Gazette or follow our adventures on Facebook!

As always, thank you for your continued support of our ministry to these children, their families and our community!

Don't forget to follow our adventures on Facebook.

Questions? Please contact Lynda Scribner (585)298-1547, Cheryl Power, or email [email protected]. We LOVE to talk about our program! If you want a "hands on" experience, contact Lynda to set up a personal tour. Thank you!

Can life insurance be given to benefit our endowment fund? There are a number of ways to make a gift of life insurance to our endowment fund. You can give an existing or new life insurance contract to the church by making the church owner and beneficiary of the contract. Upon your death, the church/faith-based nonprofit will receive the death benefit. If you give a new insurance contract, you can receive a charitable deduction for the annual premiums you pay each year to keep the insurance in force. If you give an existing insurance contract, you can claim an immediate income tax deduction

based on the lesser of: (i) the cash value of the insurance contract or, (ii) the aggregate amount of the paid premiums. Alternatively, you can remain the owner of the insurance contract, but name the church/faith-based nonprofit as primary beneficiary. Although you will not receive an income tax deduction, your estate will be entitled to an estate tax deduction for the amount of the death benefit. You can also name the church as a contingent beneficiary, meaning the church receives the death benefits only if the primary beneficiary dies before you do. Our endowment fund is held at InFaith Community Foundation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. InFaith’s professional gift planners can explain the benefits of giving life insurance and how this type of gift might work for your situation. For more information, call InFaith at 800-365-4172. Thank you!

The ladies met for the first time in September. We made a tentative schedule for the year. It was so nice seeing and speaking to everyone.

We had some monies in our treasury to disburse to different charities. Contributions are being made to the American Red Cross, Ontario Family Promise, Lutheran World Relief, and St. John’s Preschool.

Anyone interested in joining our group is welcome. All you have to do is be a lady in our St. John’s congregation. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 16. Hope to see you there!

Sunday School NewsDebbie BiederbeckeThe Sunday School year began on Rally Day, September 8. New students and returning students joined in the Sanctuary for opening and to meet their teachers. We had a “bubble launch” outside and talked about how our prayers go up to God. Everyone was invited to the Family Room for a reception of apple cider and doughnut holes.

We will soon be selecting a project to use our weekly offerings for. If you need offering envelopes, please let me or your child’s Sunday School teacher know and we will be happy to get them for you.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, and others who so faithfully bring their children to Sunday School. We are always happy to have visitors, also.
