News Update: Lynda Scribner DIVORCES Gary!! ‘In God We Trust!’

From the Pastor's DeskPastor Bob Weidmayer

It’s the good old summertime! Finally, school is out, and we can get to the fun! As you contemplate your summer activities I urge you to stop and as a question. “What is the most important thing in your life?” I suspect most of you would respond like most Americans, “Family!” If that is the case, then let’s just reflect a moment. What

do your actions say about your priorities?

Mark 6:31 Jesus tells His disciples “31 “Let’s go to a place where we can be alone to rest for a while.” Many people were coming and going, and Jesus and the apostles didn’t even have a chance to eat.”

Too often we allow the busyness of our schedules and summer to consume us. We are so caught up in the hustle and bustle of sports, work, recreation, and more that we neglect the one thing we said was the most important. Families are often divided as we hustle to get all the kids to their activities usually on the opposite parts of town! When was the last time you had the chance to sit down together at the same time in the same place and enjoy a meal together?

Some may protest; “Our children need these activities to grow, develop and achieve the success they desire!” While that may be true, what is the cost of such success? Actions follow what is valued. There are few things more compelling than being around a person who is passionate about an activity they pursue. The person eats, sleeps, drinks, and breathes it. When asked about what is important to them, you can almost see their spirit on fire as they describe their involvement. Actions follow what is valued. If you value "family", how does it show? I'll have some of that, that and that. When faced with a smorgasbord of recreational, educational, or job opportunities the first question should be, "Will my involvement support what I value most?" Most opportunities are worthy of our time and effort, but if they do not support that which is most important, is it worth it?

Summer is a great time to re-evaluate your actions. Are you spending the necessary time as a family to build good habits? Proverbs 22:6 tells us “Train a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not turn away from it.” Suddenly our overburdened, activity laden schedules become the norm and not the exception and we train our children and others around us that it’s okay to live

such a life. This is where Jesus’ words quoted above are so important. A rough paraphrase might be “Let’s stop and take a breath and reconnect.” Those words are not just for His disciples but, ALSO FOR US!

I challenge you to take this summer and say “No” to the overabundance of stuff to do and say yes to that which we value most. Make a priority to come to church as a family either on Sunday or Wednesday night. Make a priority to sit around the table and enjoy a meal daily, no cell phones, no TV just talk. Make your marriage a priority and go on that walk, sit and enjoy the day, reconnect. It’s not too late even if your children are grown and on their own. Invite them over and re-establish the priority. Our actions follow what we value most. Do your actions show that you value God first, family second and all the activities to build us in our walk together?

“Let’s go to a place where we can be alone to rest for a while.” (Mark 6:31)

Serving Christ with you,

Pastor Bob Weidmayer +

President’s Message

Howard G Barnes

We’ve heard the old saying “You can pick your friends but not your family”, or something like that. I believe that your friends can be family and you may have a stronger connection to them than you do your blood.

I love my blood relatives. At the same time, I have several members of my family who are my friends. My best friend has been my friend for 24 years and is introduced as my brother. We have other “uncles” and “aunts” for my kids, and I have a few moms and a couple of dads, none of which are blood.

Why does this matter? No matter what situation we are born in, there are people who love us like family no matter what. Family is deeper than blood.

Scripture

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. – Proverbs 17:17

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. – Romans 12:10 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. – Galatians 6:2

Imagine someone who loves you at all times no matter what. Someone who wants to out do you with honor and someone who will help you bear all your burdens? Sound like family? sound like Christ? Then guess what, that is your non-blood family.

I have been blessed to have many people in my life who are non-blood family. It doesn’t detract from my blood kin, but rather gives me access to even more people who love me.

This is part of God’s plan. For us to be cherished and loved by many.

I am grateful!

ChargeTake a minute to thank your non-blood family. Send them a text. Give them a call. Tell them you are thinking about you. Remember, they are in your life by choice and want to be there for you. Don’t take them for granted.

PrayerLord, you gave me plenty of family members. You then chose to give me even more non-blood family. These people are part of your plan to help me feel loved, cherished, and honored. Help all of us to remember how blessed we are to have our bonus family. Remind us to be grateful to them for their friendship. Help us to support them and love them as you have loved us. In your name, Amen.

A SUMMER OPPORTUNITY TO HELP MAGGIE’S KIDSDeaconess Maggie Harris at Community Lutheran Ministries in Rochester is planning her annual summer Day Camp for the children in her Joseph Avenue neighborhood. We have the opportunity to help give the children there a wonderful summer experience by providing them with some of the things they will need. These things include towels, swim suits, socks and individually packaged snacks. These things can be new or gently used. Mission and Ministry has placed a labeled beach tote in the family room for any of these things that you may wish to provide. The camp will run from July 8 to August 16, and we will deliver donations for the duration of the camp. Anything you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

FPOC

Rev those engines ... COMING JULY 27, 2019!

The 3rd AnnualThe Bed Race is FPOCs major fundraising event.  Teams of five (one rider and four runners) from local schools, businesses, the faith communities, etc., construct an actual bed on wheels and decorate it with the theme of their choice. Teams enter the competition and race their beds (using manpower only) against other teams for awards and prizes.  Each team raises money to support FPOC in helping homeless children and their families in Ontario County.

Awards are given for the most money raised by a team, the fastest beds, and the best theme. Additionally, the Most Spirited team and the "Crowd Favorite" also win awards!

The Bed Race has a been tremendous success! Join in the fun! Contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Missions & Ministry

Do you have stuff you would like to sell but don’t have a great place to hold a garage sale? Mission & Ministry is holding a community garage sale Saturday, August 3rd from 9-4pm in the St. John’s parking lot. We will rent tables for $15 each so you can take advantage of the Farmington Carnival traffic and sell, sell, sell all those things you have been itching to get rid of. Proceeds from the table rentals will go toward a St. John’s Pre-School scholarship. Space is limited to 15 tables. A sign-up list is posted in the family room. We would like to open up the opportunity to sell some sort of concessions during the sale to other church teams. If your group would like to raise a little $$$ by selling a snack or beverage, or if you have any questions please see Kim Baxter or another member of the Mission & Ministry Team.

Thank you! On behalf of the Baxter family, we are so grateful for the love and generosity of St. John’s Sunday School and families. From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate the unexpected and generous memorial gift in memory of Brian’s Aunt, Kathryn Baxter. When you hear of natural disasters taking lives, it’s hard to believe it can happen to your family. We know that Aunt Kathy would have been active with her church to help out those in need in her Texas community following the tornados. While nothing can replace her, it is so nice to know that with your love and thoughtfulness we are able to help her community in her memory. So, in the words we would hear her say often, “bless your hearts” for your gift….  Brian, Kim, Morgan & Aaron Baxter
