Thursday May 28th Maths

1. Warm up: Mangahigh ( use the link from school text message if you have not yet registered) OR Mental Maths Book page 55 Thursday

2. Topic: Capacity – Today we will learn how to record capacity using litre, half- litre and quarter litre bottles.

Task 1_ Watch this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFTlete-nMM

Task 2: If you have done any baking over the last few weeks you will know that you have to measure the correct amount of liquids for the recipe. We might need to add 100ml, 200ml 500ml and so on.

Today we will investigate the following measurements: 1 L , ½ L , ¼ L ¾ L .

What do you notice about these measurements? Do you see fractions? We can use fractions in capacity.

½ L = half a litre

¼ L = quarter of a litre (Remember a quarter is a half of a half)

¾ L = three quarters of a litre (a quarter and a quarter and another quarter)

Take a look at the following jugs and the measurements along the front. Can you match the fraction to the amount of liquid in the jug?

Task 3: If you have your own measuring jug, pour in the following amounts of water:

½ L (this is also known as 500ml) , ¼ L (this is also known as 250ml) ,

¾ L (this is also known as 750ml)

If you don’t have a jug, use a litre bottle and estimate the amounts. 32
