Reading During the months of April and May, our focus will be in our Research Clubs. In these clubs students will strengthen their nonfiction reading skills. They will start by studying one animal and end the unit by comparing two animals. They will be building on the skills they learned in our previous non-fiction unit. In this unit their focus will be on a specific animal. We will also be showing them a variety of ways in which they can present their new information. This will tie into the writing unit. These are skills necessary for the fourth grade. In June we will be reinforcing the note taking skills we have learned throughout the school year.Ways to Help at HomeWhen your child is reading at home, if they are reading a fiction book, have him or her retell what they read in the book or the chapter. Listen for the character names and the “problem” or “solution” in the story. If they are reading a nonfiction book; have them retell and listen for the subheading or a description of a picture. Encourage

your child to take notes as they are reading a Fiction or Nonfiction book.

WritingIn April and May, students will continue to respond to reading. Using text evidence to convey their understanding of what they read. This is an important skill going into Fourth Grade. We are working on taking the children through the writing process. It is important to understand that good writing takes time. Multiple drafts, revisions, edits, and hard work go into improving a strong writing idea. We will be completing more writing pieces on the computer because most of their writing is done on their google docs accounts in the Fourth Grade. In June, we will be completing culminating pieces and reflection types of writing. Getting them prepared for next year while reflecting on their strengths and skills they have learned this year.

MathIn April we will be preparing for the New York State Mathematics Assessment, students will be working hard to review many mathematical skills during school hours. You can further assist your child by reviewing old tests, which can be located at:https://www.engageny.org/

In May and June we will be learning all about fractions. Students will need to understand what a fraction is, how to display it with pictures and on a number line, recognize equivalent fractions and compare fractions. You can help your child better understand fractions through cooking! Choose a favorite recipe and have your child help you measure ingredients!

Physical Education with Mr. Reynolds Grade 3 will be working on Basketball and Floor Hockey. These are very popular team sport activities and our students will learn and understand the rules that are involved. Once our skills are worked on, we will move towards playing games. The 4th and 5th student are also completing their City-Wide Fitnessgram physical tests. This has not effect on grade. It is just a test that is taken throughout the city. We understand that the weather will be getting warmer out, but please make sure your child or children are coming to school in sneakers on the day they have gym.

Myon with Ms.

Simpson Third graders have been reading biographies about women in the month of March. For the rest of the year, students will be asked to read about challenging historical events (such as the Titanic) and to read of people who overcame challenges to

succeed (such as Helen Keller). Science with Ms. Sass In science third graders are presently learning about sound energy. They conducted an experiment exploring how sound travels through solids, liquids and gases. Soon they will be learning about light energy and how light travels too. Our next unit will be Force and Motion. Students will learn the meaning of force and different types of force. They will be conducting several hands on experiments exploring gravity, friction, and magnetism. Have your child list all they ways they use force throughout their day. In May and June they will be exploring simple machines. Students will get the opportunity to build their own simple machine and share with the class.

Music with Ms.

Brigida Students are playing the recorder. The recorder is a wind instrument commonly used in elementary music classrooms. Students are learning to read music, play solo, and perform in a

group setting. Coming up in April, May and June, students will be composing their own music and preparing for a performance! Stay tuned for more information.

Social Studies with Mr. Geelan 3rd graders will continue to learn about world geography and world communities. We will use our knowledge of world geography to develop our understanding of world cultures. We will be focusing our cultural studies unit on China.

● Breakfast is from 7:30-7:50 and school uniform is mandatory (light blue shirt and dark blue pants.) School begins at 8:00 and students arriving after 8:00 am will be marked late.

● Your child should be coming home with 2-3 books each night and should be reading for at least 30 minutes.
