[email protected] Little SIR Message—Tony Orlando

First and foremost I would like to thank all who helped, and all who attended the “Sir Club Lounge” on August 4th. We had a great turnout of members and guests totaling 106. Thank you.

Next I would like to alert you to our speaker scheduled for October 6th. Michelle Gouldsberry conducts community outreach for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Envision Silicon Valley Effort. Envi-sion is the VTA’s approach to working with community leaders and resi-dents to discuss current and future transportation needs, identify solu-tions, and craft funding priorities. She held a similar role for the Santa Clara County Traffic Authority, which was responsible for building Route

85 and making improvements to Highways 101 and 237. Michelle will pose the question: What’s your vision for the future of mobility in Santa Clara County? More: Light Rail; HOV Lanes, “focused” Public Transport ???

Michelle has her own communications consulting business. She has worked with a range of clients in technology, biopharmaceuticals, finan-cial services, and education. Earlier in her career, she served as a public relations manager for a Peninsula investor relations firm and an account representative for a San Jose public relations firm.

She began her career as a broadcast journalist, working for a syndicated television newsmagazine run by KCRA-TV in Sacramento and as a general assignment reporter in Beaumont, Texas.

Michelle has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and master’s degree in journalism from North-western University.

If you have ever complained about the traffic, and it could (or will) get worse, this is an opportunity to hear someone address solutions.

For the meeting on Tuesday, November 3rd we have scheduled guest speaker Gene Gug-lielmo, who will present some history and facts about the Guglielmo Winery, a proud family owned winery in Morgan Hill that just celebrated its 90th anniversary. It was in 1925 that the winery's founder, Emilio Guglielmo, purchased 15 acres of land which has expand-ed to become Guglielmo Winery. Emilio had three grandsons, George, Gene and Gary pic-tured here. Gene is the one in the middle

MEMBERSHIP - Jeff Schlageter

We had 2 inductees at our September Meeting and 2 resignations. We have recruited 28 YTD and lost 14 YTD, leaving us at 145 (up from 131). I still hope that will get to 150+ members by the end of the year, giving us the opportunity to consider another member for an Honorary Life Mem-ber Award. We will need to induct about 10 more new members based on likely attrition. Our Members and Recruiting Captains must continue working to find suitable and willing candidates. WE CAN DO IT!

Birthday Boyz For OCTOBER

Puzzle #2 This test/puzzle is to gauge your mental flexibility and creativity. In the years since it was developed it has been found that few people can solve more than half on the first day. Many have reported coming up with answers long after the test had been set aside, at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed, and some have reported solving it, but only over several days of ruminations. Good Luck! At the Oct 6th meeting/luncheon SIR Br. 114 will buy a drink for the Br. 114 member and his guest submitting the most correct an-swers before Oct 2nd, provided he has brought a guest to that meeting/luncheon. HUMOR????

The following are “household hints” that also serve as a bit of humor. I can only hope that you find them

more humorous than helpful.

1. TO AVOID CUTTING YOURSELF WHEN SLICING VEGETABLES, GET SOMEONE ELSE TO HOLD THE VEGETA-

BLES WHILE YOU CHOP. 2.

2. TO AVOID ARGUMENTS WITH WOMEN ABOUT LIFTING THE TOILET SEAT- USE THE SINK.

3. A MOUSE TRAP PLACED ON TOP OF YOUR ALARM CLOCK WILL PREVENT YOU FROM ROLLING OVER AND

GOING BACK TO SLEEP AFTER YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON.

4. IF YOU HAVE A BAD COUGH, TAKE A LARGE DOSE OF LAXATIVES - YOU'LL BE AFRAID TO COUGH.

5. YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE

THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

6. IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES - NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING, BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR

FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN THE STAIRS.

Editorial Comment: I have taken a few more steps

“outside the box” with this edition, and I sincerely hope

the new items find a receptive audience. I have tried to

make the “Index” more specific so the reader can skip

those items of little interest to them-my response to the

complaints about length. I have inserted the page about

our SIR Branch structure and the “Job Description as

“educational” pieces that might stir up a few more volun-

teers. I sincerely hope more members take advantage of

the invite to come early and observe our BEC meetings.

Additionally, I hope my efforts at humor (?) are received

with a spirit of understanding and not found offensive to

anyone. Lastly, I would point out that the regular

attendees at our BEC Meetings have within their midst

10 Big SIR dating back to 2001; 12 holders of Distin-

guished Member Awards, a Senior Honorary Life Mem-

ber, 2 Honorary Life Members, a presently serving Re-

gional Director, and a dozen or so Committee Chairmen,

all still offering their service graciously and enthusiastical-

ly. Please consider seriously the opportunity to join with

such men and volunteer to participate in a more active

role. I guarantee you will not regret such a decision. I

would also point out that only the Officers and Directors

receive the big salaries, but who needs a tax headache.

Please consider taking the Big SIR invitation seriously.

“Senior USB Stick”

Very soon it will become compulsory for sen-ior citizens to carry not only their ID, but also their insurance documents, their prescription list, a compact version of their medical file, the statement declaring if they want to be re-suscitated after a heart attack, stroke, etc. etc. Consequently, a lot of paperwork will have to be carried when a senior citizen goes out the front door OR when they travel! Spe-cifically for this purpose, a special “Senior USB Stick” has been developed. Take a look below….

History In Our Time One evening in 1929 two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their girlfriends to a lookout point high above a Mississippi River town in Illinois to watch the sunset. It was a romantic night and one of the women ob-served that it would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car. Lear and Wavering liked the idea. Both men had tinkered with radios (Lear had served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy during World War I) and it wasn't long before they were taking apart a home radio and trying to get it to work in a car. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds: au-tomobiles have ignition switches, generators, spark plugs, and other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible to listen to the radio when the engine was running. Lear and Wavering identi-fied and eliminated each source of electrical interference. When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio convention in Chicago where they met Paul Galvin, owner of Galvin Mftg. Corp. Galvin needed a new product to manufacture. When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio convention, he found it. He believed that mass-produced, affordable car radios had the potential to become a huge business.

Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvin's factory, and when they perfected their first radio, they installed it in his Stu-debaker. Then Galvin went to a local banker to apply for a loan. Thinking it might sweeten the deal, he had his men install a radio in the banker's Packard. Half an hour after the installation, the banker's Packard caught on fire. (They didn't get the loan.) Galvin didn't give up. He drove his Studebaker 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a booth, he parked the car outside the con-vention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing conventioneers could hear it. That idea worked -- He got enough orders to put the radio into production. Galvin decided he needed to come up with a catchy name. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio businesses used the suffix "ola" for their names - Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola!

When Motorola went on sale in 1930 it cost about $110 uninstalled, at a time when you could buy a brand-new car for $650. By that measure, a radio for a new car would cost about $3,000 today. In 1930 it took two men several days to put in a car radio -- The dashboard had to be taken apart so that the receiver and a single speaker could be installed, and the ceiling had to be cut open to install the antenna. These early radios ran on their own batteries, not on the car battery, so holes had to be cut into the floorboard to accommodate them. The installation manual had eight complete diagrams and 28 pages of instructions. Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of a brand-new car wouldn't have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great Depression -- Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorola's pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got another boost when Galvin struck a deal with the B.F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, installation included, had dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running. (The name of the company would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to "Motorola" in 1947.) In the meantime, Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios. In 1936, the same year that it introduced push-button tuning, it also introduced the Motorola Police Cruiser, a standard car ra-dio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts. In 1940 he developed with the first handheld two-way radio -- The Handie-Talkie -- for the U. S. Army.

A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II. In 1947 they came out with the first television to sell under $200. In 1956 the company intro-duced the world's first pager; in 1969 it supplied the radio and television equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon. In 1973 it invented the world's first handheld cellular phone. Today Motorola is one of the largest cell phone manufacturer in the world -- And it all started with the car radio.

The two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvin's car ended up taking very different paths in life. Wavering stayed with Motorola. In the 1950's he helped change the automobile experience again when he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators. The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats and, eventually, air-conditioning. Lear also continued inventing. Remember eight-track tape players? Lear invented that. But what he's really famous for are his contributions to the field of aviation. He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, and in 1963 introduced the Lear Jet, the world's first mass-produced, affordable business jet. Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.

Conclusion: This Job Description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of the job and general details of its requirements as it relates specifically to our SIR BRANCH 114. In more simple terms it is intended to find a team player with imagination that is willing to put his skills to work to make this branch and our little piece of heaven (The Villages) a better place to live, and to do it in concert with other similarly minded and well intentioned members. Additionally, the salary for this position is 90% of the BIG SIR salary, so the opportunity to get rich is there for the taking. If you are even remotely interested in this activity, even as a committee member, please consider attending a BEC meeting. They are conducted prior to our month-ly luncheon meetings and they start at 10:00 AM. It is a good opportunity to view the worker bees in their colony without making any commitment, and some of the dialogue can be quite entertaining. I would add further that if you have any interest or willingness to serve in any of our com-mittees this is an excellent way to get a feel for the machinations that are in-volved and do so without feeling committed. As an aside, the coffee is on the house. See you on Oct. 6th or Nov 3rd. Dan Affourtit
