Have you heard the king of the instruments, the largest
musical instrument in the history of music? That is the pipe
organ that you see in big churches. Many children cover their
ears in fear and surprise when they hear the loud sound for the
first time because they have never heard that kind
of volume. This magnificent sound that no human
can produce reminds us of the greatness of
God. There are some things we cannot do, but God
can do all things. The horizontal pipes, named
Trumpets, wake you up and lift your spirits. Also, a
very soft pure sound that resembles a flute strikes
the heart and inspires the spirit that was broken
with harshness of life.
I would like for you to look at this organ built in
the 15th century that is on the mountain of Sion,
Switzerland. It is tiny. This instrument is considered
to be the oldest playable organ and it still sounds
wonderful to this day. Unlike other musical
instruments, the pipe organs’ shapes, size, tone, and
volume varies so much. The pipe organ builders for many
centuries have been building pipe organs in very diverse forms,
but they had God in their minds, hoping that the organ would
become an instrument of praise. When I first heard the organ
music during worship service, I was struck by the beauty and
started to learn how to play organ with the hope that the sound
I produced would someday be used to praise God.
We humans are so diverse in sizes, personalities, abilities,
and beliefs, just like these pipe organs. Our appearances and
the sounds we make are different in each person. I recall the
moment that I had the fortune to play the organ in Sion and the
grand Silbermann organ in Arlesheim. These historical
instruments luckily remained in Switzerland during the World
Wars, and organists around the world travel to play. These
masterpieces were difficult to tame for an organist who had
very limited experience with historical
instruments like me. I was in constant
conversation with the organ while I
played. “Help me. Let’s work together so we
can praise God together through music. This is
not about me, this is not about you.” Likewise,
we hope to become a unity out of our differ-
ences and simply become an instrument
through which God’s love and peace prevail in
the new year.

クリスマスページェント Christmas Pageant
さくら組担任 山瑞静絵 by Shizue Yamazui, Cherry Class Teacher
Every year we start preparing for Christmas right after Thanksgiving. We put up a Christmas tree with nice ornaments made by the PTA quilting club, and kids and parents prepare presents for each other in secret. And we start to practice the Christmas pageant! It was the 27th time for SAINTS and 15th for our current school location and myself. There are so many memories in the Christmas pageant every year.
The pageant script was written by the teachers. Sometimes we put in a new song or change the order of things. But usually the songs are inherited from the past. Before we started practicing, some kids knew the songs already! Children were dreaming about what role they wanted to play. I am so happy SAINTS Christmas pageant is passed down year-to-year by the children. But I have always worried about what could go wrong. I know I should have enjoyed the moment because Christmas is a message for good news.
We made mistakes sometimes. One year with the innkeepers’ song… Mary and Joseph asked “Can I stay tonight?” and innkeepers replied “No (Dame)” in Japanese. But some American parents thought they heard something like “D*mn it”! At the time we never thought about these kind of things. But now everything is a precious memory.
This last Christmas pageant was great. The children are growing up in amazing fashion. Every role is very important. They worked very hard. I hope children remember this SAINTS Christmas for long time.

Final Pageant, yet the Beginning of New
by Norihiro Sasayama, Elementary Head Teacher

This year, the SAINTS Elementary Pageant took place one day after the kindergarten pageant just like previous years. Every elementary student bowed and exited the center lane with a relieved smile and some uneasy tension from the huge applause that they never experienced before. Even the first graders spoke up as bilingual narrators in Japanese and English. They memorized every line and articulated each word using the whole body. Many hours of practice at school in front of teachers and at home in front of family paid off. The last people out were Joseph and Mary. Mary was holding a baby Jesus in her arms.
About three weeks earlier, before the Thanksgiving break, students were informed which part they were assigned for this year’s pageant. Children were both nervous and hopeful while they waited for the announcement. The SAINTS Hall was filled with the mixed air of emotions as some had a sigh of relief, while some had a sigh of disappointment. However, no role is indispensable to complete the pageant story. As the Bible tells us, every part of the body such as eyes, nose, mouth, fingers, even the soles of the feet help each other to form the body of Christ. It might be difficult to understand this concept for young students.
There are many unfair incidents in our lives. Why was the son of God born in a dirty, smelly manger? Why not the magnificent palace in a bed made of gold? He was crucified thirty years later for the human sin. Not because of his sin, but on behalf of all of us.
This year was our 27th Christmas Pageant, and this one closed its final curtain at SAINTS. Yet the story of the birth of Jesus will continue to be told by someone else, somewhere else. The Christmas pageant curtain will rise somewhere in the world every year without ceasing.

My Experience with Hands-Off Parents
By Annie Varghese, English Teacher
Throughout my teaching career, I have realized how significant parental support can be in the classroom. Before I continue, let me provide some insight into my educational upbringing. I was an immigrant; my parents immigrated to America in 1984. We didn't speak any English at all, but my parents quickly found jobs and enrolled us in school. Being Indian, there is a strong emphasis on education, striving for excellence, and respect for teachers. I come from a long line of educators in my family, so it was natural for me to succeed in class. There was no other choice. I would like to share my own experience having supportive, but hands-off parents from kindergarten – graduate school. My parents’ approach to support me in the classroom was mostly hands-off. I remember my mom attending only 1 parent-teacher conference throughout my entire time in school. My parents never checked to make sure we completed our homework before we sat and watched our favorite television shows, The Cosby Show and Full House at 8:00 every night. I don't ever remember my parents running out to the store to get supplies for a project or making me study for a test. It was just expected that we knew to study accordingly to what the teacher has given us. In our house, "the teacher was always right." Period. My parents would always question us and say, "Well, what did the teacher say about this?" Well, that was the end of the conversation. I remember being involved in so many after school activities in-school - not outside of school. My parents had no idea what kind of activities I was involved with. They just knew I was in school; they didn't seem to ask so many questions. I remember spending so much time at the library (these were the days when every household didn't have a computer). It was the tutors at the library where I went to get help for homework, learn test studying skills, not my parents. The expectation was still there to succeed. Being in after-school activities, gave us leadership roles among different groups and that was another form of success my parents knew about, but had nothing to do with, besides encouraging us from afar. My parents’ strongest form of support was encouragement. My parents never said "No" to anything that was educationally related. I remember attending overnight trips to Philadelphia, Washington D.C, and even going on a study tour to Seoul and Beijing while in college. At these trips, all my parents did was sign on the dotted line- they never came to a meeting to ask questions. Trust me, if my son was going on an overnight trip anywhere, I would have 1,000 questions. This doesn’t give permission for parents to be non-compliant with teachers’ emails, requests, or to skip out on conferences. I grew up in a different time frame. There wasn’t a huge push on parent- teacher conferences as there is now. When there was a reason for my parents to be involved per teachers’ requests, my parents got involved right away. I am not implying through my experience for parents not to be responsive to their children’s teachers. Looking back, I wouldn't change anything about how my parents weren't involved in my school life. Success was visible, but the push was there from afar off. This method worked well in my family, because of the goals that were already set before me. My parents were hands-off, but their hearts were all there.

Alumni News
▪After graduating from Emerson College in Boston, MA, with a major in Communication Sciences & Disorders, and a double minor in Psychology, and Hearing & Deaf-ness, Piper is now working at a preschool in Austin, TX. Here is a recent message from her: “Around a month ago I started teaching my students (3-4 years old) how to say Good Morning in Japanese and numbers 1-10 in Japanese. They're loving it! They go home and tell their par-ents how to say it. They even recite the numbers all on their own as they play in the class-room. The kids have been loving learning Japanese so maybe I might consider making circle time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Japanese, then English for Tuesday and Thursday.”
We all wish you good luck and hope you keep sharing the fun of learning new languages with young children!
