The Governing Body is responsible for the management of the school. The full Gov-erning Body meets at least once every term. The Governors support and chal-lenge the work of the school. They make sure that the academic standards achieved by our children are improving and that our school is inclusive. The Governors agree all policies and check on safeguarding and equality, check spending against the school’s budget and hold the Headteacher responsible for the day to day health and safety of all who use the school and its site. The Governing Body is made up of people nominated by the City of York Council, the local community, parents and staff. Gov-

ernors serve for a fixed term and Parent Governor elections are held every three years, or when there is a vacancy. If you would like to know more about the role of the Governors, or are interested in becoming a Parent Governor, please talk with the Clerk, Ms Kvist-Hansen or the Chair, Mr Cooke.

We take children from the term after their third birthday into Nursery. Children are admitted to Reception in September of the academic year in which they are 5 years old.

Parents may defer the entry of their child into school, if they so wish.

Behaviour Whole School Rules:

We follow instructions from any adult

first time.

We show care and concern for others in

the ways we speak and act.

We are always polite to other children,

all adults and visitors in school.

We take care of school property, and

other peoples belongings.

We keep everyone safe in school by

walking, using equipment sensibly, and

staying in the school grounds.

We pride ourselves on our pupils’ behav-iour at Burton Green both in children’s atti-tudes towards other children, and towards adults in school. We often receive praise for our children when out of school.

We have School rules that keep everyone safe and ready to learn. We also set our own Class rules at the beginning of each year. Class rules are displayed in our class-rooms so every child and adult knows what is expected of them. Positive praise, stick-ers, certificates and whole class rewards recognise good behaviour.

At Burton Green we want all children to achieve their potential, and we have high aspi-rations for their achievement. The Early Years Framework is used across Nursery and Reception, and the National Curriculum is fol-lowed from Year 1 onwards. Children are taught in mixed ability classes and a wide range of teaching and learning styles are used. Ofsted in January 2011 recognised that we “use comprehensive assessment data to plan lessons and assess pupils’ progress”. This en-sures that each child is constantly challenged. All classes send out a leaflet each half term detailing the learning planned and how you can support your child. This is also on our

website in the class pages: http://www.burtongreenprimary.co.uk. There are parent consultations each term where you can discuss your child’s progress , and we value parents and teachers working together throughout the school year.

Equal opportunities are provided for all children regardless of gender, race or cultural background. The school places great emphasis on the basic skills of reading, writing and maths and has been awarded the nationally recognised Basic Skills Quality Mark for the third time in celebration of the work of pupils and staff. Key Stage One children are taught for 22 hours and 30 minutes per week (excluding playtimes, assemblies and lunch times). Pupils in Key Stage Two are taught for 24 hours and 35 minutes per week.

Children with Disabilities or Special Education-al Needs (SEN) are identified early in their schooling and are effectively supported by skilled staff. Needs may be academic, physi-cal, language-based or emotional, and parents will be invited to talk with staff to plan the best way to meet these needs. Parents are kept fully informed with regular meetings to report progress, and teachers have high aspi-rations for children with SEN and children with disabilities. Some children’s needs are short term and the support needed will take the form of extra help to receive one-to-one, or small group, teaching for a period of time. For longer term needs we may turn for support from outside agencies including Speech thera-pists. Please talk to us if you have any con-cerns about your child’s development. Mrs Sarah Cope is our SENDCO with overall responsibility for all children with SEN.

Behaviour for Learning

We want our pupils to become highly effective learners ready for the 21st cen-tury and all the challenges that it will bring.

As a school, we encourage appropriate behaviour for learning through the 5 R’s:

Ready to Learn … we question, are imaginative, make links, and are re-sourceful

Relationships … we collaborate, empa-thise, and listen to others.

Risk Takers … we are not scared to be wrong, we make mistakes and learn from them.

Reflective Learners… we plan, revise our plans, and review together or alone.

have a number of workshops and

activity days across the year, and

home visit is made and ’Little Pen-

guins’ runs for 6 weeks to prepare

children for Nursery.

Nursery and Reception work closely as

an Early Years Foundation Stage, which

facilitates a smooth transition into full-

time school. Children in Foundation

Stage access independently different

areas of provision designed to give chil-

dren a wide range of learning opportu-

nities. Children are actively involved in

contributing to their own learning. Early

reading skills and phonics are given high

priority, and encouraged from when

children begin in Nursery. Parents are

Burton Green Primary School follows the Common Admission Policy for the City of York. For more details ask at the School Office, or visit the City of York website ’Applying for a School Place’ through www.york.gov.uk

Walk, Cycle or Scooter to School

We encourage pupils to walk ,scooter or cycle to school as part of our scheme for keeping healthy. Children who cycle to school must leave bicycles chained to the racks provided in the cycle sheds. School does not ac-cept responsibility for lost bicycles. Cycle and pedestrian training is organised in school grounds and the local area. We would ask that parents, who bring their children to school by car, park safely and avoid the zig-zag markings on the road. Parents and children should walk on the paths, avoiding car parking areas when on school grounds.

explain what is being taught and how learning can be supported at home. Parents are also invit-ed to attend termly class assemblies and regular open sessions where they can participate in activ-ities alongside their children.

Children are encouraged to take books home to share with their family, and we ask that parents read with their children regularly.

Learning Journeys is an approach to planning children’s learning which enables children to make connections be-tween different subject areas and gives learning a clear fo-cus. Linking enables basic skills in Literacy, Mathematics and ICT to be reinforced in other subjects and provides opportu-nities for children to apply these skills in a range of contexts. Educational visits to theatres and museums, events in school and regular input from visitors help to widen our pupils’ experiences and encourage expressive language. These experiences form a key aspect of linked learning and sup-port building of wider community links. Children are also given opportunities to express themselves in structured and planned play activities. They share their ideas with others, both in the classroom and with a wider audience in assem-blies and concerts. We aim to encourage articulate and con-fident speakers, and attentive and considerate listeners, able to express their opinions clearly. Information is sent home to parents at the beginning of each learning theme to

and Activities

After school clubs and activi-ties run from 3.15-4.30pm and are free of charge. As well as a daily Homework Club, activities include sports and dance clubs. These activ-ities are very popular and there are frequently waiting lists to join. There is also an Extended Club which runs daily from 4.30-5.30pm. There is a charge of £5/child and places must be booked the week before they are needed.

Learning Journeys

During the year staff may arrange visits to museums or parks to link to work done in the classroom. Sometimes this will simply be a learning walk around the local area , and we ask that you sign a form when your child enters school giving your approval for these activities, rather than asking for permission each time. For longer visits a letter will be sent home explaining the purpose of the visit and parents are often invited to join us. Visits help bring learning to life for children. However, there may be transport costs and ad-mittance charges to be paid. We try to meet some of these costs through fundraising but sometimes have to ask parents to make a voluntary contribution towards them. We try to not burden you with too much expense but if you have a problem, please let us know.

Play at Burton Green

We are lucky to have two separate play areas with extensive equip-ment for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Older pupils act as Play Leaders to support games and activities. Key Stage 2 play area– let your

There is daily collective act of wor-ship (assembly) for all children ex-cept those in the Nursery. This reflection is predominately Chris-tian in nature but we also tell sto-ries and use artefacts from other faiths. We recognise and cele-brate the diversity of religious and cultural backgrounds in the com-munity. Outside visitors are invit-ed to talk to the children where possible to broaden children’s un-derstanding of the beliefs of the wider world around them.

Religious Education (RE)

Harvest Festival Celebration

R.E. is also taught in the classroom fol-lowing the City of York syllabus. Par-ents have the right to withdraw chil-dren from collective worship after dis-cussion with the Headteacher. Themed weeks such as India and China weeks allow exploration of other faiths within a celebration of other cultures and beliefs and contribute to building children’s understanding and respect for other faiths.

Younger children are expected to take reading books home each night and to spend a few minutes reading/sharing the book with an adult. As they get older children will bring home work related to school projects or designed to improve their Maths and English skills. It is important that you support your child by setting aside time, and if possible a quiet ar-ea, for this work. With regular prac-tice children develop confidence in their own abilities and establish a pattern of working at home which helps them in later years. If you need any help with homework set please see the Class Teacher.

Photographs

We regularly photograph the pupils at work or engaged in sports and festivals. The children also take photographs using a digital camera as part of the IT curriculum. These photographs are used in school, by the press when they are invited to special events, and sometimes on the web site. Individual children are never identified by their full name. If you object to your child being photographed please talk with the Headteacher, but please be aware that if you do not wish your child to be photographed, participation in events such as con-certs, where other parents may be taking photographs, will be diffi-cult.

INSURANCE

Please note the school does not carry personal accident insurance.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Children at Burton Green Primary have access to a wide range of computing provision. This includes Learnpad tablets, laptops, desk-top PC's and interactive whiteboards in classrooms. Children devel-op their skills in ICT through use of control mechanisms, tape record-ers, cameras, videos and computers. All pupils have restricted access to the Internet. By the end of Key Stage 1 children are expected to search for information, within supervised areas, use programming software to make objects move, understand and create algorithms and to load, save, retrieve and print a range of software. At Key Stage 2 pupils will work on programming by continually evaluating and testing the effectiveness of algorithms, including correcting er-rors within programmes, control devices using different inputs, iden-tify and explain consequences to sharing too much information

Attendance: ‘Every lesson counts!’

If children miss school or are late, they miss their learning and can fall behind. We also worry that they may not be safe. If your child is ill or not able to come to school we ask parents to ring the school before 10.00am on the first day of absence and fill in a “pink slip”, kept at the Office, when your child returns to school. Should your child be absent from school without explanation this is “unauthorised”. Attendance is monitored closely as poor attendance has a large impact on pupils’ progress. We expect attendance to be above 95%. We check and follow up any patterns of absence and lateness. If your child has been ill please keep him or her at home for 24 hours or until completely recovered. Did you know that 90% attendance for your child means that they will miss 4 whole weeks of learning in a

school year?

HOLIDAYS DURING TERMTIME CAN NO LONGER BE AUTHORISED EXCEPT IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND CAN RESULT IN A FINE. Please keep school informed of any change of address or telephone numbers in case your child is unwell or if there is an emergency.

Uniform

Our school uniform is a red sweatshirt or cardigan with the school emblem that can be worn with grey trousers, pleated skirt or pinafore dress. These can all be ordered at the office. Children should wear flat black shoes or sandals. Please ensure that clothes are marked with your child’s name. We are able to help families who have difficulty meeting the cost of uniform – please speak with the Headteacher. Jewellery should not be worn. Earrings are a particular safety hazard especially in PE lessons and at playtimes. Staff are not permitted to take out a child’s earrings. For the short period of time after ears have been pierced children may bring plasters from home to cov-er the earrings. For PE lessons earrings should be removed or left at home. Please note the school does not carry personal accident insurance.

Medicine

If your child is on a prescribed course of medicine

more than twice a day you must speak to the Office and complete a form explaining the dosage and the time it is to be given. Asthma inhalers should be left at the Office.

Complaints Policy

We always like to know if you are not happy with some-thing about school. We will listen and investigate and let you know if we need to take any further action.

The PTFA

We are always pleased to see parents at social events and fund-raisers. There are opportunities to support your child’s learning through class workshops and weekly reading mornings. Each term parents are invit-ed to the child’s class assembly and to stay for refresh-ments afterwards provided by our wonderful Parent, Teacher, and Friends Association. The Parents, Teach-ers, Friends Association (PTFA) fund raise for school, and support us at events eg Summer and Christmas Fayres. Each class has a parent representative. New members to the team are always welcome! Please ask at the Office for further details.

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is run by Mrs Rafferty and Mrs Paylor from 7.40am to 8.50am every school day — there is no charge. The club is very well attended and we ask that parents book a place at the Office.

Fruit and Milk

All children are provided with fruit or vegetables to eat at morning break each day, with school funding this scheme for Key Stage 2 children. Milk can be or-dered and paid for from Cool Milk for the week, half term or termly by registering with the company and paying either by telephone(0800 1422972) online, Paypal or by cheque. Children under 5 years of age receive milk for free but must still be registered with Cool Milk before they can receive it.

Lunchtime

Children can have a cooked school lunch or bring a packed lunch. School lunches are excellent and cooked on the premises. There is no charge for a school lunch for Reception and KS1. The current cost for KS2 is £10.75 per week, (£2.15 per meal), which should be paid on Mondays for the forthcoming week at the Office. Parents on Income Support may be enti-tled to Free School Meals (FSM) for their child. We would ask that all eligible families should make a claim, even if they bring a packed lunch, as each child

Burton Green Butterflies

Burton Green Butterflies Pre-School is based within Bur-ton Green Primary school and holds 10 sessions a week from 8.30am-11.30am and 12.30pm–3.30pm Monday to Friday during Term Time. We place a great deal of emphasis on children learning through play and base our support around the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. This framework al-lows for children to develop their characteristics of learn-ing within the 3 Prime Areas and 4 Specific Areas. We aim to create an enabling environment that provides challenge and security for your child to develop their so-cial and educational potential. To achieve this develop-ment the staff carefully plan activities to promote the children’s development and assess their achievements through the use of an Early Years Foundation Stage Pro-file. We are registered with Ofsted as an Early Years setting and operate as a Registered Charity with a committee of volunteer parents overseeing the paid staff. The staff has a wealth of knowledge and experience both as prac-titioners and as mums and all of our staff live within York. The Pre-School is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance and registered to accept childcare vouchers. All our staff are either fully qualified or under-taking study to become Early Years Educators and are always available to answer any query that you have. Our manager holds the Early Years Teacher Status.
