WAXED COTTON CANVASNicknamed Tin Cloth, waxed canvas has earned its reputation as the workhorse of natu-ral fabrics. 2 The rugged cotton canvas is impregnated with a generations-old formula of waxes. Water simply beads up and runs off while the cotton allows the bag to breathe. Surprisingly, the fabric is not oily, it remains odorless, and the wax won’t wick into other fab-rics. 2 Since the 1800s, field tan has been the traditional color for waxed cotton canvas. It’s our standard color and we like it just fine, but we’ve also started building in Heritage Black.

SOLID BRASS HARDWAREAll of the buckles, snaps, slides, and D-rings on Frost River packs and bags are solid brass. 2 It matters because Frost River stuff will outlast brass plating. Instead of turning steel grey the hardware will develop an old world patina. That’s the way it’s meant to be. Bonus points: brass clinking against brass makes a great sound.

LEATHER FROM RED WINGThe leather in our straps, reinforcements, and trim comes from the S.B. Foot Tannery in Red Wing, Minnesota. 2 In 1872, Silas Buck Foot began tanning leather to provide high grade footwear for fellow Minnesotans as a way to stay warm in the winter. In 1905 the Foot fam-ily partnered with what became Red Wing shoes. The partnership remains to this day.

Our Old-Style Canoe Packs always come with tumplines because we just plain believe in ‘em. Alternating between the tump and the backstraps will prevent fatigue. They have to be used correctly, though. The band does not go ACROSS your forehead, but should sit ABOVE the forehead like this old woodcut shows. Grab the sides of the tumpline and lean into a loaded pack; you’ll feel the weight transfer from your shoulders. Switch back to the shoulder straps when your back tires.

Nessmuk PackThis nostalgic pack has stepped right out of the history

books. Nessmuk, the alter ego of writer George Washington Sears, popularized Adirondack-style camping, ultralight canoes used with a double-bladed paddle and the

Maine Guide Pack (which this pack is based on) back in the

late 1800s. He wrote his classic book

Woodcraft in 1884 and it has been in print ever since. 2 The Nessmuk is just the right size for a North Woods guide’s day-tripping sundries: rain coat, lunch, field guides, binoculars, knife, first-aid and survival kit.
