Greetings Madeira Beach,

As fall is right around the corner and we give thanks for another wonderful summer, it is a good time to reflect on the past few months of happenings in our great City. As a City, we should feel great that we have completed our New City Hall Complex. Our new complex has all ready shown to be a revenue generator from holding events, everything from NCAA Soft Ball Tournaments to concerts, weddings and other personal and public events.

I am proud of our new complex, as it is a focal point in our county and it shows what it means to live and

be a part of Madeira Beach. On the financial front, once again, we have been able to amend our Budget (through a string of Resolutions) due to record increases of revenue coming into our City. Our enterprise funds and building department have exceeded our projections and these funds continue to grow. Working together with the county and state, we have been able to get more grants and money from bed tax dollars to keep projects rolling and plan new ones for the future. The latest grant awarded to our fair City was a $50,000.00 dollar grant from the Florida Parks Department for playground equipment and a $140,000.00 dollar grant for beatification on Gulf Blvd.

Fall also brings many fun outdoor festivals and activities. Wednesday’s outdoor market on Madeira Way is up and running and this year the Seafood festival was one of the best ever. Working with the CVB and the Johns Pass Merchants association we were able to get $65,000.00 dollars of Bed Tax Dollars back to the event. The Fall King of the Beach is November 5-7th and is known is the Largest fishing event in the Country. We are looking forward to see who is crowned the next King. A new big event, thanks to our own Commissioner Pat Shontz and our Rec Director Doug Andrews, we will be welcoming the Florida Orchestra to town. To finish the season, our pride and joy, the 49th Annual Festival of Lights Holiday Boat Parade is December 12th. Keep an eye on our website as there are more events coming before the end of the year and the start of the New Year. As you can see, it has become easier to find something fun to do in Madeira Beach.

As always, I am available to you and am happy to discuss the progress and issues in our City. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, and suggestions.

Take care and God Bless,Mayor Travis Palladeno

It was our pleasure to present Bill Edwards with a key to the City at the Tampa Bay Rowdies

game. We proudly support the Rowdies and appreciate all that you do for our beach communities and the Tampa Bay Area.

Hello to our visitors and citizens of Maderia Beach, Well the day has come! The City Centre is complete including its additional band shell that was added as an afterthought at the Rec Center. We have hosted some concerts that proved to be quite popular including Grammy Award Winning Artist Boy George and Culture Club. And although some may think

that we’re only looking to host rock bands, some of you will be pleased to know that we signed the Florida Orchestra to play a Christmas concert on December 18th! Other programs in the mix are to host a “Jazz in the Park” series and we are in the process of ordering a large projection screen that can be used to show movies on the band shell and even on the beach. My Recreation Director has a vision of getting rafts for people to float on in the water at Archibald Park while we show the movie “Jaws”. As a side note, its specifically because of that movie that I don’t go in the water J. No matter where we position it, I’m sure it’ll be a family-friendly event and attended quite substantially. For those citizens that were thinking that the city was only going to host loud rock bands, there isn’t anything further from the truth. The reality was that we had to prove to promoters that we could handle concerts of that magnitude and now we’re in a position that we’re turning down concerts every month meaning that we can be “picky” as to the type of genre of music we want to host here in Madeira Beach. So we definitely passed the “dress rehearsal” with flying colors even though mother nature tested us during all three concerts with plenty of rain. As fall approaches, we have hosted our annual Seafood Fest which has proved to be a Floridian favorite. The Old Salt King of the Beach is up next, so be sure to tell your family and friends to come down and see everything that the festival and tournament has to offer. Also, a local favorite is our Christmas Boat Parade. This year’s prizes have been increased so the amount of boats should be quite impressive. The date of the parade is December 12th and we invite you to view the parade in Johns Pass or rumor has it there are a few people in town that host some pretty extravagant parties for your viewing pleasure. In terms of road construction, the entire Boca Ciega Drive neighborhood will be redone from a stormwater and road construction standpoint starting this fall. Also, the north end of Gulf Boulevard will begin the utility burying so there will be quite a large amount of action happening in town in the upcoming months. If you have any issues in regards to those projects, please contact me at City Hall. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about what’s happening in Madeira Beach, my door is always open. I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe fall season.

Grand Opening of ROC Park was October 10th. It was a great success and an amazing day to extend our gratitude for all the familes, businesses, and friends who support R.O.C. Park! Just over a year ago, we started working on the construction and we’ve come a long way. Without the support of our community, this beautiful park that has helped fill a void in the lives of so many families who have lost children, would not be made possible!

Top 10 Reasons to Shop Local

1. Local Character and ProsperityIn an increasingly homogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character have an economic advantage.

2. Community Well-BeingLocally owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes.

3. Local Decision-MakingLocal ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.

4. Keeping Dollars in the Local EconomyCompared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.

5. Job and WagesLocally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

6. EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class.

7. Public Benefits and CostsLocal stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.

8. Environmental SustainabilityLocal stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.

9. CompetitionA marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.

10. Product DiversityA multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

Crabby’s Fishing Cornerinshore: Fall is here and with it comes a cornucopia of inshore gamefish. Whether you’re looking for some drag screaming snook and redfish, or some fine eating flounder and sheepshead, the next few months will give you plenty of opportunities. Once the water temps get into the seventies a natural predatory instinct will fire up in all fish to get food while they can before it becomes scarce in the colder months. A sure bet to getting these fish on the end of your line is to live bait chum a productive area. To do this you will need a lot of small pilchards in your bait well, I suggest at least a hundred baits per person. Then you need to find a productive area like a large pothole on a flat or a point of an oyster bar or mangrove shoreline. Anchor up within casting range and start tossing unhooked live baits in the area of the structure (about 6-10 at a time every couple of minutes). Now this can wear your arm out so there are a couple of tools to make it easier on your arm and elbow. One is a whiffle ball bat with the top cut off at an angle to help you sling the chum out further. The other is a modified sling shot that can be messy but will launch chum the furthest of any product I’ve seen yet. Now once you have thrown a few dozen chummers into the area watch and listen for signs of bigger fish eating on them. After the first sign free line or float a hooked bait back to where the action is and be ready. The sound of other fish feeding will bring out the larger more curious fish who don’t want to miss out on the feeding frenzy. This technique will help bring the fish to you and save you the time and energy of searching large areas for scattered fish.

Offshore: Fall is a can’t miss time of the year for fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Grouper and snapper are abundant and fattening up for the winter, but the true meaning of fall is the pilgrimage of pelagic species into our area. Kingfish, mackerel, cobia, tuna, sailfish, wahoo, and tripletail, will all show up in abundance to gorge themselves on the vast schools of baitfish that have been gathering all summer long. Fishing for them is pretty straight forward. Conventional reels with high line capacity is a must. As far as rigging goes be ready for anything, stinger rigs for the toothy critters and a strong circle hook paired with six feet of sixty pound leader for those line shy tuna and sailfish would be a good start. A verity of bait such as sardines, threadfins, and blue runners will help increase your odds on those picky fish. Although pelagic are constant swimmers they are very structure oriented. The structure could be anything from patchy hard bottom, high relief structure like reefs and wrecks and even large cargo ships that have been on anchor for more than a few days. But the rule of thumb is that the area must be holding bait or it won’t hold fish. Be ready, check your tackle, line, electronics, and make sure your boat is ready to go and I guarantee that if you put the time in you will make some great drag screaming memories this fall.

As always be safe and let someone know your fishing plan and the area witch your fishing. Fall is also the time of year for big weather too. Watch out for storm fronts coming in from the north and don’t risk it, there are too many nice days a year and one bad experience can shake somebody for life.

Be safe and Happy Holidays,Brian Crabtree

Have you heard that many of Florida’s lakes, streams, springs and estuaries are polluted and considered impaired by the EPA. Did you know that Boca Ciega Bay is not considered to be impaired? The City of Madeira Beach Central Services is working hard to keep it that way!

City Central Services staff patrol the streets after rain events to make sure the stormwater inlets and pipes are clear of debris, sediments and pollutants. Removal of debris and pollutants from the stormwater system keeps them from discharging to the Bay and helps reduce street flooding. The City also makes sure that the beaches and parks are patrolled to remove litter. These efforts help keep the Bay clean. But it is everyone’s responsibility to help keep the Bay clean. So what can an individual do to help?

1. Follow the guidelines of the City’s Fertilizer Ordinance. Remember that fertilizer application in September is prohibited by Ordinance. When you apply fertilizer or pesticides on your yard, make sure that you stay at least 5 feet away from open water. Pesticides kill more than just bugs in your yard. Too much fertilizer in the Bay can cause algae blooms. Purchase lawn fertilizer without phosphorus. Phosphorus is only necessary

for blooming plants, not lawns.

2. Clean up after your pets. Pet waste contains harmful bacteria. If left in front yards or parks, rain will eventually wash the waste into city streets and to the stormwater system. The City’s stormwater system discharges to the Bay.

3. Blow grass clippings back onto your yard and not into the streets or Bay. When vegetation such as grass clippings washes into the Bay, it decomposes and releases nutrients into the water. Excess nutrients are the Number 1 pollutant that harms water bodies in the State of Florida.

If everyone follows these 3 simple steps, think how much cleaner our neighborhoods and Boca Ciega Bay could be. City staff thanks every resident for their support.

$50,000 Top Prize and $150,000 Total Payouts

Why Fish the King?Have you ever tournament fished? If you have then you are likely familiar with the Old Salt King of the Beach Fishing Tournament. If you haven’t, and always wanted to, it is the best tournament to begin with. There are 3 great reasons …

• LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: Old Salt has made winning the King of the Beach possible for all levels of anglers. We implemented a 30 mile boundary to ensure boats with 1, 2, 3 or more engines can compete head to head. Also, no intimidating check outs or shotgun starts.

• OVER 50 WAYS TO WIN: The tournament pays 50 places deep across 5 divisions: Overall, Single Engine, Spanish Mackerel, Ladies and Youth. Each division has cash and/or prizes with $150,000 total up for grabs.

• REASONABLE ENTRY FEES: Anglers may fish the King of the Beach for as little as $195 which is half the cost of most Kingfish tournaments. So the risk is smaller and at the same time the rewards are bigger. 1st place overall wins $50,000 guaranteed.

The event is so much more than just fishing. It is a 3 day festival with marine and art vendors, a food festival with local flavor, live music, boat displays and a kids zone. “Combining a community food festival, the Mad Beach Food Fest, with our tournament seemed a natural fit. Fishing is part of our community, so we welcome all to join us” says Old Salt President Tom Verdensky.

The event will be held at the newly renovated Madeira Beach Recreation Fields. Parking is available near the new field and at the Madeira Beach Middle School and shuttles are available.
