WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, OCTOBER 4TH, 2020

PASTORAL MESSAGE If the feast day of a saint falls on a Sunday, it is usually not celebrated, at least not at Mass. This is not meant to be a slight to the saint and has more to do with the importance of the Sunday liturgy where the focus is the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are a few exceptions. Some of the Marian feast days are celebrated when they fall on a Sunday, All Saints Day is celebrated if it falls on a Sunday, as are the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul and the Feast of St. John the Baptist. The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi is on October 4th, which this year falls on a Sunday, so we won’t be celebrating his feast day at Mass but we can still recall the life of St. Francis and the impact of his life. My guess is that St. Francis would be a bit surprised at some of the reasons he is so popular today. Much of the popularity of St. Francis has to do with his love of animals, a trait that many appreciate, especially those of us with pets. It is not uncommon to see statues of St. Francis with animals close by, particularly if the statue adorns a garden or sits atop a bird bath. He is also known for his love of nature. St. Francis did enjoy the beauty of creation. However, these characteristics, as appealing as they may be, are not why we revere him as a saint. It is more due to his deep faith and service to others. St. Francis’s conversion story is well known. He was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant.

The young Francis gave up the promise of a lucrative career and comfortable life to follow Jesus Christ through service to the poor. A pivotal moment for St. Francis occurred when he went to San Damiano, an old and abandoned church which was located on the outskirts of Assisi. While praying, St Francis heard the words “Go and repair my church, which you can see is in ruins” which St. Francis interpreted in two ways. One was to rebuild the church where he was praying but also to rebuild the larger Church. These words changed the direction of his life. During St. Francis’ day many churches were abandoned, many people were not catechized, and there was very little care for the sick, the poor, and the uneducated. St. Francis, and those who accompanied him, both during his lifetime and in the years that followed, have been rebuilding the church through ministries of service. To say St. Francis and his followers took these words to heart is an understatement. A visit to the Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, DC can give a visitor a greater appreciation of the contributions of the Franciscans on so many levels. The monastery church is large and features all sorts of artwork. There are many paintings that are a three-dimensional depiction of events in the life of Jesus: his commissioning the Apostles, his encounter with Thomas after the Resurrection, and a powerful depiction of Calvary. There are also depictions of the life of St. Francis. The church also has many stained glass windows which depict saints somehow associated with the Franciscans. There are saints that quickly come to mind when we think of Franciscans: St. Clare who founded the Poor Clares, St. Anthony, usually depicted holding the Child Jesus, and St. Bonaventure. There were also depictions of saints who are not so familiar such as St. Ivo, who lived in the 13th century and was a lawyer and later a priest. While reflecting on the Gospels, he was reminded of the life of St. Francis and dedicated his life to serving the needs of the poor and caring for prisoners. St. Peter Baptist was a Franciscan missionary sent to Mexico, then to the Philippines, and finally to Japan where he died a martyr’s death. St. Peter of Alcantara, like St. Francis, was born into wealth. He joined the Franciscans and was ordained a priest. He chose ministry to the poor and became known for his gifted preaching. St. Hyacintha had an interesting life. She was drawn to spiritual practices, but also enjoyed the trappings of luxury. After a failed relationship, she entered a monastery, but found ways to hide luxuries that were forbidden to nuns who had taken a vow of poverty. She later gave away her luxuries, served the poor, and when a plague hit, she was known for her compassion. The life of St. Francis of Assisi inspired followers who followed his example and shared in his ministry to rebuild the church. Following the example set by those before us dates back to the earliest days of the Church and Jesus Christ himself. Jesus Christ models for us the way to live a life of faith. We see it in the way he prayed, the way he preached, the way he healed, and the way he showed mercy. We also see it in the way he accepted his cross, showing us meaning in suffering. When we read the stories of Acts of the Apostles, we see that even if they had different experiences than Jesus, the Apostles did their best to continue Jesus’ example as they spread the Gospel. In our second reading, St. Paul writes to the Philippians “Keep on doing what you learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the peace of God will be with you.” He was handing on the faith and ministry of Jesus Christ which he received to the Philippian people. This continued to the days of St. Francis and continues today. So perhaps as we remember St. Francis of Assisi, who followed the example of Jesus and inspired others to do the same, we too can follow that example and continue the work of rebuilding the Church.

Mass Intentions are now being taken for the daily masses throughout the next six months. Please contact [email protected] or call 617-926-9680 to reserve a Mass Intention for your loved one.

Recently, several parishioners have reported receiving emails from scammers pretending to be Fr. Conley requesting assistance. Let there be no mistake about this, at no time will any of our priests or anyone else from our Collaborative ever request donations via iTune or other gift cards, money orders, or wire transfers. This scam, and others like it, have targeted churches and other nonprofits nationwide. The emails are not being sent from an actual Collaborative email account - our systems have not been "hacked." They are being sent from newly-created public email accounts that are designed to look similar to Collaborative email or a priest’s private email account. If you receive such an email, DO NOT REPLY.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING Sacred Heart Parish & Saint Patrick Parish

Saint Patrick Parish has had secure online giving since 2013, with over 100 parishioners giving regularly. At this time we en-courage BOTH parishes to use this site for easily making their donations. Sacred Heart parishioners can enter a note online (special intention) that they want donations to go to Sacred Heart and we have the capability of transferring that money to the proper parish account. The link to sign up for online giving is: www.osvonlinegiving.com/1470.

There are baskets located immediately at the entrance to the church for your weekly offertory contributions. We continue to encourage parishioners to sign up for online giving, or we invite you to mail in or drop off envelopes to the secure mailbox outside the Collaborative office door.

Please continue to prayerfully consider how you can continue to offer your weekly financial support to our parishes.

This Week’s Psalm Reflection

A vine from Egypt you transplanted; you drove away the nations and planted it. It put forth its foliage to the Sea, its shoots as far as the River.

Why have you broken down its walls, so that every passer-by plucks its fruit, The boar from the forest lays it waste, and the beasts of the field feed upon it?

Once again, O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted the son of man whom you yourself made strong.

Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name. O LORD, God of hosts, restore us; if your face shine upon us, then we shall be saved.

Psalm 80 recalls God's history of faithful love by making an analogy. The metaphor this week's psalm employs for the relationship between God and His people is the image of a gardener planting a vineyard. Instead of spurring the people to repent though, the psalmist sought to spur God to repent: "Lord of hosts, look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted." Another spot in the Bible where this vine imagery can be found is in Isaiah 5. That passage, however, has the parental God saying to the disobedient children, "After all the faithful love that I have shown you, why are you rebelling against me?" Here, the psalm has the afflicted children saying to the parental God, "After all the faithful love that you have shown us, why are you allowing us to suffer?" If God is the vintner who had planted Israel in the promised land after taking the vine from Egypt, why then would the vineyard keeper take down the walls so that the boars and others might trample the vines? The request we sing is that God will rebuke the invaders and then we will call upon His name. A big, expectant ask indeed. Reading this psalm invites reflection on our own longing for restoration. Even as we experience a season of brokenness, we look forward to the time of healing. Though this is a song of lament, the psalm does speak a word of hope. God can act through His “right rand,” Jesus. We know He can give us all we need and protect us from those intending harm, and that is exactly what the psalmist is asking of God. Perhaps we can envision this psalm speaking to Jesus’ ministry and to our own engagement with leaders, especially in this time of conflict in our world. Lord, may your face shine upon us that we might be saved!
