About the programThe market for treating and managing water and waste water in India will reach USD 1,966.6 million in 2021, and is currently growing at an annual rate of 15%-20%. Low wastewater treatment capacity and poor infrastructure are some of the major water problems faced by India. In few cities and towns, such as cities in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat wastewater treatment facilities have the capacity to handle less than 12% of wastewater discharged. Many wastewater treatment facilities are closed due to improper design and poor operation and maintenance. Thus, the market for water treatment in India is experiencing immense expansion and investment these years. Clearly, it is important that Danish companies and researchers increase cooperation to facilitate knowledge exchange between Denmark and India leading to joint R&D activities and joint market development initiatives. Climate challenges are similar in many parts of the world, and strong international networks are important to finding the most promising solutions.

Urban Flooding: Recent examples (2018):

• The Indian state of Kerala has been devastated by severe floods this year. Nearly 500 people have died, while more than a million have been evacuated to over 4,000 relief camps. Tens of thousands remain stranded. The monsoon season usually brings heavy rains but this year Kerala has seen 42% more rain than would be expected, with more than 2,300mm of rain across the region since the beginning of June, and over 700mm in August alone.

• Due to inefficient drainage systems and rainwater harvesting structures, city of Gurugram(closely located with National Capital Territory) is under floods due to heavy rains. The preventive measure are not in place to avoid flooding during rainfall.

Thank you for your participation in the study tour and you contribution towards solving the issues listed above among others. This is all in an effort to combating the effects of climate change and also addressing UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Best regards,

Dr. Deepshikha Sharma,Senior Commercial Advisor, Cleantech Innovation Centre Denmark - India
