WASM Graduates’ Association

Annual General Meeting Friday 6th September 2013

Presidents Report for 2012/2013 Bill Beament Introduction

Welcome everyone to the 2013 AGM Your association has gone from strength to strength in one short year.

We have focused our attention on the older graduates and letters were mailed to 140 encouraging them to re-join. It is heartening to see their membership payments coming in and being able to welcome them back to the fold. 618 members have been contacted in total and their details are now on the web site member’s directory.

A student branch of WASMGA is in development with a focus on bringing the students into the fold early, giving them opportunities to work at their networking skills and making contacts within industry.

We are working with Curtin on a MOU, which will deliver substantial benefits to the association, in particular the free use of their latest data software, Razors Edge. The software cost the university $700,000.00 and a further $50,000.00 per year to service.

Plans are advanced to form a Kalgoorlie WASMGA branch under the chairmanship of Christian Price, to ensure WASMGA can assist the necessary industry connection between WASM Kalgoorlie in particular & (WASM in general) with the mining industry. (Thanks to Neil Warburton & his team).

We are building a better relationship with Curtin, under the steerage of Colin Stirling VC, and WASM to achieve the best results for WASM campuses and its students.

The new scholarship program, speared headed by Stuart Pether and Administered by our COO Ann Meyer was launched in November 2012 and has successfully allocated 30,000.00 each to six WASM students over a three-year period.

WASMGA joined with Curtin to develop the Next Step Mentoring Program for WASM and successfully found industry mentors for 20 WASM students covering both campuses. Both programs will be expanded in 2014.

Constitutional changes have been effected to achieve DGR Status, which will eventually allow all donations from industry and individuals to be tax deductible.

The creation of a number of subcommittees has been implemented to handle the workload and deliver timely results.

We are finalising a partnership with Hanrahan and Smith. The association’s first foray into creating a business arm of the association to build its independence and free up its finances so all donations from industry will go into the scholarship programs.

We are offering and delivering better services and communication tools to our members at discounted rates via our membership providers. Thank you to the following companies for their support:

1. Platform Communications (Media and Public Relations) 2. Hanrahan Smith (professional placement and recruitment services) 3. Ballast Financials (superannuation, insurance, financial advice) 4. Forrest Miller (discounted mortgages and accounting services) 5. Smales Jewellers (Kalgoorlie connection…Ron Smales former WASM grad) 6. Musica Viva (to keep the miners cultured) Concert discounts 7. Recognition of Record WA Mining Industry Safety Achievement in year 2012’13

Our School owes its inception to the WA Minister for Mines in late 1890s that sought & gained Lord Forrest’s Cabinet approval to establish the School of Mines in Coolgardie in 1902, to address the shocking accident incidences occurring at that time. Our recently retired Minister for Mines, can feel most gratified that in his last term, he witnessed the State record its first fatal accident free year, after over 120 years of exposure.

It is our belief that the WASM brand of Grads that are employed in the day to day management of many mining industry operations in WA, have contributed to this excellent record, & noting that the two senior positions today in the WA DMP & who are responsible for regulations & inspections for safe mining operations in the State, are WASM grads, Simon Ridge, (min ’88), the Executive Director of Resources Safety Division, (& also the appointed the State Mining Engineer), & his Director of Mines Safety is our councillor Andrew Chaplyn ( also Min’88), -- Well Done!

Diggers and Dealers

Sandvik, ABN Resources and WASM Curtin generously sponsored this year’s WASMGA and WIMWA Diggers and Dealers’ Sundowner, with help from Platform Communications. WASMGA wishes to sincerely thank everyone for his or her support. Our thanks also go to Sabina Shugg for delivering the keynote speech. It was a fantastic night and would not have been possible without the efforts of all involved. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks again to WASM for sponsoring a marquee opposite the Goldfield’s Centre, which allowed the Association to promote itself. Special thanks to WASM Students for helping us to promote the Sundowner throughout D&D. 2013 Diggers & Dealers saw their first Mining Games take place, Wombats vs. WASMGA. Sadly, we were narrowly defeated.

Annual Ball ‘Rumble In The Jungle’

Once again Sophie Taylor, from Taylored to Suit, delivered another fantastic event for WASMGA. Rumble in the Jungle exceeded all expectations and was a brilliant night for all 236 guests.

Special mention must be made of our sponsors, WASM Curtin, Barminco, Rio Tinto, Walker Newman and Assoc., Atlas Iron, Intertek, Grahame Smith, Smales Jewellers, Musica Viva, Kasbah Resources, Saracens and Platform Communications.

Our raffle of jewellery donated by Smales raised over $3,000. The live auction, organised by Helping Hand and auctioneer Stuart Pether, brilliant performance, helped raise nearly $13,000.

Thanks to the generosity of Saracen’s, who donated gold cufflinks as part of our live auction.

A special mention must be made of Shane McLeay who did a great job as MC for the evening and then managed to get up at the crack of awn and run in the City to Surf, completing the race is just over 3 hours.

This year’s ball was popular with both the guys and girls with the addition of our broad chested Tarzan’s. In the great WASM tradition we ended the ball by dropping our trousers to Eagle Rock.

Despite the tough economic climate we were still able to put together an incredible event and I’m sure next year will be even better.

Conclusion

As President of the WASM Graduates’ Association I am honoured to be the elected representative of our Alumni for another year. With our new business initiatives, membership base increasing and the expected leadership changes occurring at Curtin I am very excited about the direction our association is taking and the roles it will play in ensuring that WASM continues to deliver a ‘world class’ mining education.
