Dear Conference Participants,

Welcome to the 24th annual West Point Association of Graduates Leaders Conference, sponsored by the Class of 1967, one of the signature events of WPAOG’s yearlong sesquicentennial celebration. We are pleased to welcome our Class, Society, and Parents Club leaders, as well as our Military Academy Admissions Field Force representatives, the USMA leader team, faculty, staff, and cadets.

The theme of this year’s Leaders Conference—“Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Embrace the Future”—is a modified version of WPAOG’s 150th celebration communication efforts. You will hear references to this theme throughout the conference: during briefings, at workshops and breakout sessions, during social events, and in addresses given by our conference speakers. It is our hope that you will be energized by this theme and that it inspires you to carry the message back to your own West Point communities, helping to make our aspirational vision—for the Long Gray Line to be the most highly connected alumni body in the world—a reality.

We invite you to use this agenda as your comprehensive guide to the Leaders Conference. In it, you will find helpful administrative information and descriptions of the conference sessions. If, at any time, you have a question that is not answered here, please feel free to pose it to a WPAOG team member. He or she will ensure that you receive an answer and any resources you require for the conference.

Thank you for your leadership in support of West Point and the Long Gray Line.

GO ARMY!

BG (R) Ty Seidule

General Seidule served the nation for more than 35 years in uniform; leading cavalry and armor units in war and peace; serving in the United States, Germany, Italy, the Balkans, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq; and teaching at the U.S. Military Academy, culminating as the sixth Professor and Head of the Department of History. He is now Professor Emeritus of History.

A national leader in educational technology and digital humanities, General Seidule is the creator and senior editor of the West Point History of Warfare, a 71-chapter, million-word enhanced digital text published by Rowan Technology, which won the George C. Marshall Foundation Award for Digital History. All cadets at West Point and the U.S. Air Force

Academy use the book, as do students at 40 other schools.

As a digital historian, he created three Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the Civil War and World War II, viewed by hundreds of thousands of students around the world. His short video, “Was the Civil War about Slavery?” has garnered 30 million views on Facebook and YouTube, making it the most watched history lecture ever. In addition to digital works, he has written and edited five books, three of which won Distinguished Writing Awards from the Army Historical Foundation, and he published numerous articles about West Point, Civil War monuments, and African-American history. His next book, Robert E. Lee and Me, will be published in 2020 by St. Martin’s Press.

As the Senior Academic Advisor to West Point’s Athletic Director, General Seidule helped the Athletic Department with the rebrand of Army West Point Athletics in 2014. He led the West Point Department of History team’s design of historically minded uniforms for Army-Navy football games, which won national awards in 2017 and 2018. He also served for many years as the Chair of the Memorialization committee, leading West Point’s efforts to develop the Memorial Room in Cullum Hall, which honors all graduates who died in war.

General Seidule has a B.A. in History from Washington and Lee University and a M.A. and Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University.

BG (R) John Brown '71

General Brown retired in October 2005 after more than 34 years of service to U.S. Army, within which he commanded armor units at every level, from platoon through brigade, and served on staffs at every level, from battalion through theater. Notable assignments include Chief of Programs and Requirements for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE); Executive Officer to the Army DCSOPS; Commander of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division in Texas and Kuwait; G-3 Operations for III Corps; G-3 of the 24th Infantry Division; and Commander of the 2-66 Armor Battalion in Germany, DESERT SHIELD, and DESERT STORM. His final active duty assignment (1998-2005) was as Chief of Military History for the U.S. Army, for which he formulated and executed the Army Historical Program; supervised historical studies supporting the development of plans, policies, doctrine, force structure and

equipment; provided historical services and publications in support of Congress, DOD, headquarters, staffs and schools; coordinated history education in the Army School System; and managed honors and lineages for Army units, active and reserve. General Brown earned master’s degrees from Indiana University, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Naval War College, and he earned a doctorate from Indiana University. His academic experience includes teaching at the U.S. Military Academy, serving as an adjunct professor at Regis University (Denver, CO), and chairing the Army’s Military History Coordinating Committee. His publications include Draftee Division (considered to be the definitive case study of divisional mobilization during World War II), Kevlar Legions: A History of Army Transformation 1989-2005, and chapter essays in several military history books. Since retiring from active duty, General Brown has served as a historian for the American Battle Monuments Commission (contributing to the design of several visitor centers of American cemeteries on foreign soil), regularly produces the monthly column “Historically Speaking” in Army magazine, and is currently editing Barbarossa: The Invasion of the Soviet Union.

General Brown has been married for 47 years to his wife, Mary. They have two children, a daughter who is a lawyer and a son who is an army officer, and five grandchildren.
