October meeting program information:
Programs and Classes 2016 planning This is an important meeting for all to attend!
Is there a basket technique you really want to learn? Is there a material you would like to try
using? Are there weaving hints you would like to share with the group? Maybe you have
been practicing something new this year and are ready to show it to fellow members. Please
plan to attend this important meeting to give your input for the upcoming year’s programs
and classes. If you want to teach a class in 2016 come prepared to show an example of the
project. Your programs/classes committee has already been working for you and we have
come up with few ideas we hope you will like. Something new for 2016 will be an instructor
proposal application for all potential teachers to fill out. More information about this will be
available soon. If you are unable to attend the meeting please contact Susan Lester 338-
7910, [email protected] or Karen Olson 843-1361 or [email protected] with your
ideas and comments.
See you all there.

The basket structure is formed with small willow. Other
natural material such as rush, sedge, iris leaves and cornhusks are added to make a random weave
basket. The last step is to add dyed reed, ribbon & yarn for color and interest. You will have the op-
portunity to create a unique basket. Please bring an old towel, a small soaking container, and
garden scissors/shears. Fees include all other necessary supplies & tools.
Fee: $25 members, $30 non-members. Material fees: $10. Contact: Betty Hulse: 747-5794 or

Fall is a busy time for exhibits. The Sparks Library and NW Library are all set up beautifully with
members baskets, so take the time to stop in and view them. The Sparks Library has 44 baskets dis-
played by 14 of our members. The NW Library is a smaller exhibit but very well displayed. You
will be pleased to see the fantastic representation of our members work.
Thank you to Linda Havens and Phyliss Lewis for all their hard work. A great big THANK YOU to
Sandy Zoerner for volunteering to help at the Sparks Library in my absence.
REMINDERS: The Sparks exhibit will be returned to members at the October meeting. The NW

Message from the President Autumn! I think it is my favorite season. I love the crispness in the air. The gardening is winding down and harvest still plentiful. Have you collected pine needles yet? Maybe your irises and lilies still need to be cut back and saved for a basket project. Tule, cattails and grasses can be harvested. Mentally we begin to plan for the upcoming holi-days. It’s not too late to make items for giving this holiday season. It seems with fall we see lots of festivals and opportunities to sell or buy handmade items. Keep an eye on local event calendars. GBB has several such events listed in this newsletter and I’m sure there are many more available for us to attend. Let the editors know of any community events that might be of interest to members and we will make sure it gets in our newsletters. In 2016 we will say goodbye to Sandy Zoerner and welcome Karen Olson as newsletter editors. Thank you ladies! Everyone appreciates your work. Thanks to Nancy, Pam, Anne and Judy for giving demos at various community events. We all are sending a basket of blessings to Molly and Billie. Enjoy the beautiful Sierra autumn. Susan

Please convey to your members that I, on behalf of the
Douglas County Historical Society, enjoyed your dem-
onstration this weekend very much. We want to thank
you for helping us with our Saturday Family Day. I
thought it was well attended for a holiday weekend.
You all do beautiful work. Unfortunately, I did not get
to give a personal thanks to your presenters before they
left as I was selling some books in the bookstore. And
yes, we do have your book for sale in the store.
Best Regards,

Idlewild Park Willow Tunnels Project Great Basin Basketmakers has been invited to assist Keeping Truckee Meadows Beautiful in turning some unruly willow paths into fun Willow Tunnels in Idlewild Park. Volunteers will have an opportunity to enjoy an autumn morning outside in a beautiful riverside setting, cutting and shaping willow into fun tunnels for future use by the public. The willow was planted a few years ago in the park’s Sensory Garden with this project in mind. We will meet at the garden at 9:30 am on Thursday November 12. Please bring your own cutting tools, gloves, drinks and a snack if you want. We will have a sign up sheet available at the meeting. Members volunteering are welcome to keep any cuttings that we may get from our work. If you want more information or would like to volunteer for this fun community
project, please call Susan Lester 338-7910 or email [email protected]. Let’s show Truckee Meadows GBB cares about it’s community.

Washoe County Schools Might Need You.
At the September meeting it was discussed that from
time to time GBB members may be called upon to share
our knowledge of basket making with young students.
Before we can go to the Washoe public schools as a
volunteer ,we must fill out a volunteer application and
be in the county’s system. If you think volunteering in
the schools is something you may want to do, please go
to the following website and fill out a Volunteer Appli-
cation. Please submit it now. It will take them about
one month to approve you. Once approved, you can let
April Barber know and if she gets a call for help, she
can contact you.

room rentals we are asking
teachers to voluntarily do-
nate $5.00 per student back
to GBB. This is not re-
quested if you are teach-
ing in a location that has
no rental fee.
Remember this is volun-

year and will go into effect
for all classes in 2016.
