According to Wikipedia HOPE is defined by the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. The First Annual Dance for Hope is being held exactly for that reason – to provide hope to Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic that positive change is coming. When it rains in Ascension Village, the only entrance to and from the village is unavailable for use due to the high water levels. Medical vehicles, supply trucks and other necessities cannot be obtained. This unfortunate situation prevents many people from seeking the requirements they need for survival. Through humanitarian efforts we are able to provide not only hope but the resources to help eliminate this severe problem. On Saturday, February 16th my wife Dr. Dina Ghobrial and I are inviting the residents of Wasaga Beach and their friends and family, to come out to support our First Annual Dance for Hope event. The goal is to help raise funds that will go directly into building a bridge for the Ascension Village. The dance is in collaboration with Snowman Mania and will provide the festival with an entertainment component for the adult community. Music is being provided by B101 and will be playing top 40, dance, hip hop, old school and everything in between. We are looking for items to be donated for our prize table and any financial donations are greatly appreciated. We will be transforming the Oakview Room within the Wasaga Beach RecPlex into a ‘night club’ atmosphere with the doors opening at 8:00pm. The greatest sales tool ever invented is not social media. It’s not LinkedIn. It’s not NLP. It’s not SPIN Selling or some other formal sales process. It’s not your CRM software. It’s not the fax machine. It’s not the iPhone. And, it’s certainly not email. Those all are great tools, but they are not the best. No, the greatest sales tool ever invented is the telephone. If you’re like most people, you’ll do anything you can to avoid making an outbound call. It’s so much easier to send an email. There’s no risk.I cannot tell you how many times I’ve asked, “Have you talked to so-and-so?” only to hear, “I sent him an email last week.”Really? That’s the best a salesperson can do? Send an email and wait? What if your email didn’t go through? What if your customer or prospect accidentaly deleted it? What if they are on vacation but do not use an out-of-office auto responder? What if they are interested but forgot to reply? What if they have 1,500 emails in their inbox and haven’t seen yours yet?“OK, you’re right, Noah. I’ll send them another email.”“Hey, sales guy, have you heard of the telephone?”Let’s look at why email is so attractive to weak salespeople:• It’s non-confrontational• You don’t have to think on your feet• It’s “non-intrusive”• You can send it any time• It doesn’t hurt as much when they say no• If they don’t reply, you can blame themAnd now let’s look at why you may shy away from the phone:• Reluctance – You’ve been blown off before, turned down before, and hurt before. You don’t want that feeling again.• Fear – What if you blow it? What if you never get a second chance? What if you say something stupid?• Procrastination – You’ll get around to calling people when you’ve finished all your paperwork, responded to all your internal company email, and had lunch. Right after you find a few other things to fill your day with.• Inconvenience – You don’t want to “bother” them.• Timing – It’s the day before the holiday or the day after the holiday. It’s their busy season. It’s their slow season. It’s too early in the morning or too late at night. It’s Monday. It’s Tuesday. It’s Wednesday. It’s Thursday. It’s Friday. You get the point. If you think you’re bothering someone, you’re bothering them. If you have nothing of value to offer then you’re going to bother them no matter when you call.If you send an email instead of calling you increase your chances of being turned down. The prospect has too many options and too many ways to say no to you. They can choose not respond at all. They can be downright rude to you without fear of having to hear your reaction. So, the next time you have a lead – pick up the phone and call them. When’s the best time to follow up on a lead? Right now. One second after you get the lead. Don’t email them. Call them. Your prospect is the most excited they’ll ever be right now. With every second that passes your prospect loses interest. They have the opportunity to call your competitor. They have time to change their mind. They have time to Google you and your company and uncover negative feedback. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. It’s harder to sell, it’s harder to overcome the fear of calling, it’s harder to reach them, and it’s harder to impress your prospect with your responsiveness. To rise to level of master salesperson, you must master the usage of the telephone. Not how to dial it, but how to leverage it as your best method of increasing your sales.Noah Rickun is a Gitomer Certified/Audience Approved speaker. Noah delivers customized and personalized seminars on sales, customer loyalty, and personal development. pet Boston Terrier DaySaturday, February 23rd

11am - 4 pm707 River Road West, Wasaga Beach

Run entirely by volunteers, Boston Terrier Rescue Canada (BTRC) is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing single breed and mixed Boston terriers from cruelty, abandonment and neglect, as well as helping as family pets that, for a variety of reasons, can no longer be cared for, rehabilitating them, and placing them in new loving homes.BTRC is currently facing financial challenges due to many dogs requiring care across Canada, and all proceeds from this event will go to veterinary expenses for rescued dogs. There will be goody bags, a raffle, treats for people and pets, a Boston Terrier Kissing Booth, and the opportunity to speak to rescue volunteers about their organization and how you can get involved. If you've been looking for something to do with your pennies, bring them to PetValu and you can still use them to "make change" by donating to "Pennies for Paws"! Donations of Canadian Tire money also appreciated. You don't need to be a Boston Terrier to attend --everyone is welcome!www.bostonterrierrescuecanada.com www.facebook.com/BostonTerrierRescueCanada

PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR POTENTIAL GAMING FACILITY IN WASAGA BEACH – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

In late May of this year, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced their intention to expand private sector gaming in Ontario by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from potential providers as it expands regulated private-sector gaming in Ontario.

Wasaga Beach has been identified in Zone C7 along with the Town of Collingwood, Clearview Township and the Township of Springwater. The OLG has indicated that each identified zone will only support one gaming facility and will ensure any new gaming facilities are not in close proximity to an existing gaming operation.

The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking input of residents and business owners on whether or not it should support the OLG possibly locating a gaming facility in Wasaga Beach. Comments may be directed to the Office of the CAO by e-mail to or by written letter to 30 Lewis Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario L9Z 1A1, to the attention of the Office of CAO. To complete an online opinion survey and learn more about the potential opportunity, please visit .

PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETINGS:

Beach located at 1724 Mosley Street at 7:00 p.m. OLG officials will be in attendance to provide information on the proposed gaming facility opportunity for Zone C7 to Members of Council and the public. Due to the nature of the meeting, OLG representatives will only be taking questions from members of Council. Any questions from the public are required to be provided to members of Council from the respective municipalities so that they can be posed to the OLG representatives at the meeting.

In addition to the joint Public Information meeting, the Town of Wasaga Beach will be holding a Public Information meeting for members of the community

thfrom Wasaga Beach only on Wednesday, October 24 at the RecPlex in Wasaga Beach located at 1724 Mosley Street at 7:00 p.m. OLG officials will be in attendance to provide information on the proposed gaming facility opportunity to Members of Council and the public. How Crafty are You?

Hi, Myles Bradford here….. General Manager of Trilinks Golf operating The Marlwood Golf & Country Club and The Links of New England Village Golf Course in beautiful Wasaga Beach, Ontario……Where the beach is just the beginning!!! There is currently plenty of snow on the ground however, I am fortunate to be employed and working all winter here in the historic Marlwood Golf & Country Club, Built in 1928. That’s an incredible 83 years of golf history.….but mainly good comraderie from it’s golfing members and guests. Marlwood has always been available to the local community and out of town guests and families along the years. What many of you might not be aware of are the winter activities that take place here in our cozy Marlwood Country Club. We host weekly dart leagues, a card league, Poker and Euchre. An Indoor golf simulator and a fully stocked Golf Pro Shop open year round. We enjoy hosting our communities many functions, including Weddings, Probus & Rotary groups, Birthday and Anniversary Party’s. We are certainly well known for our exquisite 18 hole golf course skirting the beautiful Marl Lake, but did you know that we also include in our golf membership another Championship golf course right around the corner? Yes, 2 courses for the price of 1 membership. We are very fortunate to offer The Links at New England Village 18 Hole Championship Golf Course. It has immaculate large greens, tree lined fairways, and very nice bunkers making each green a challenge to hit. Many of our locals refer to it

The pain and fear that Domestic Violence brings to a community is far reaching. Domestic Violence is everyone's business. Whether you are at the centre of the abuse, a family member, relative, neighbour or just live in the community, we all have a responsibility to stop this crime.

As a community we must be ready to recognize Domestic Violence and be willing to report it. This abuse can take many forms, some of these being: Physical, Verbal, Emotional, Sexual and Financial. As a community we must learn to recognize the warning signs of Domestic Violence. The following are some signs that a relative, friend or neighbour could be or soon will become a victim of Domestic Violence:He puts her downHe does all the talking and/or dominates the conversationHe checks up on her all the time – even at workHe tries to isolate her from othersHe suggests he is the victim and acts depressedHe acts as if he owns herHe lies to make himself look good exaggerates his good qualitiesHe acts like he is superior and of more value than others in his homeShe may be apologetic and makes excuses for his behaviour or becomes aggressive or angry·She is nervous about talking when he is there·She seems to be sick more often and misses work·She tries to cover her bruises·She makes excuses at the last minute about why she can't meet you or tries to avoid you on the street·She seems sad, lonely, withdrawn and is afraid·She uses more drugs or alcohol to copeWhether you are a victim of Domestic Violence or a person who knows someone who is, you must get help and report it. You can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or if the abuse is occurring dial “911”. The following is only a short list of agencies and their contact information that can help. A simple Internet search could help you find the information you need to escape an abusive relationship.Assaulted Women Hotline Phone: 1.866.863.0511 http://www.awhl.org/My Friend's House (Collingwood) Admin: 705-444-2586 (crisis 705-444-2511) Email - [email protected] website: http://www.myfriendshouse.ca/Green Haven Shelter for Women (Orillia) Admin: 705-327-7383 (crisis 705 – 327 – 7319 or 1.888.285.6958) Email – [email protected] website: http://www.greenhavenshelter.com/Women & Children's Shelter of Barrie (Barrie) Admin: 705-728-6300 (crisis 705-728-2544 or 1-800-461-1716) Email - [email protected] website: www.barrieshelter.comMy Sister's Place (Alliston) Admin: 705-435-9400 (crisis (705) 435-3835 or 1 – 800 – 461 – 5419) Email - [email protected] website: http://www.mysistersplace.ca/index.htmlIf you are a victim of Domestic Violence, report it. I'm excited to introduce to you my first featured entertainment section in this week's beach BOOSTER. We live in a great community and as the town is growing so is the entertainment/events. Beside my love for real estate, I have a passion for this industry having worked in radio and television over the past years. It is my pleasure to provide you with local happenings in Wasaga Beach.

Let me begin with the 6th Annual Meaford International Film Festival (MIFF) from August 30th to September 2nd, 2012. MIFF was instrumental in giving us a helping hand with our very first WBSFF and continues to share our vision of nurturing our festival for years to come. Four films were presented this year: Saalam Dunk, The Dynamiter, Under African Skies, A Separation. I attended the opening night premiered of Saalam Dunk. Filmed in Iraq and produced by Beau Lewis with director David Fine this documentary is based on a team of girls in their first season, the joy of their first win to the pain of losing the American coach who inspired them, this film offers a vision of what Iraq could become. It was very inspiring and must say tearful at times.

Rogers TV Fall Launch opened their doors on September 6th to unveil seven new series added to the many returning favourites. Rogers TV is a unique TV channel where community members take an active role in conceptualizing and producing television shows for local audiences. For a complete broadcast schedule visit www.rogerstv.com. Beach Booster is your community newspaper any thoughts you wish to share please email me at [email protected]

Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF) for our Action/Comedy category. I must say he was certainly a hit amongst the ladies. Duggan is a talented actor, producer, writer, originally from Belfast, Ireland, currently based in Montreal. Alan also commutes regularly between Montreal and Toronto. He wrote and produced 21 episodes of an Irish mob series “Claddagh” set in Montreal where two brothers fled Ireland after being in the army. This series is airing online at www.claddaghtheseries.com. The title in itself is based on Irish love, royalty and friendship – in a mobster world love, royalty and friendship plays an important role, CLADDAGH is the story of JAMES McGOVERN (Alan Duggan), 35, born in Northern Ireland and raised in Organized Crime. James is the very definition of "Claddagh" - LOYAL - with a reputation for being FAIR, RESPECTFUL and very DANGEROUS. Although he dutifully follows his bosses orders and doesn't hesitate to kneecap or even KILL the family rivals, he still isn't quite comfortable doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons. While on mission in Montreal to implement old Claddagh traditions in young Canadian recruits, he gets fingered for a crime and the attention of the local authorities. Unable to finish the job, he must bolt back to Belfast, where he remains, stripped of the seniority and respect he worked his whole life to earn. Demoted to the status of petty cash collector, he is hungry for a solution to rebuild his reputation and regain respect. I met Duggan through Stage 32, a worldwide social network, for film producers and broadcasters. Duggan recently was interviewed on Beach Corner via Skype from Montreal. Born in Northern Ireland, Duggan came to Canada 18 years ago and fell in love with the beauty of our country and our people. Duggan performed in theatres in All Saints Day, sequel to the cult hit movie “Boondock Saints” and starred as Brendan in the play The Weir, by Conor McPherson (1999 winner of Laurence Olivier Award for best new play). Duggan did a guest appearance on the hit comedy series "The Business", and played a dramatic role in the film "Transit." Duggan also starred in the LA based mock-reality show "Mr.Greeks." His film credits include the recently released All Saints Day, All The World's a Scum", and a host of independent films. Theatre credits include the Montreal Fringe Festival, in the hilarious play "Isla Xoochimiclan," and an Athens, Greece production of “Lord Byron” as the title character. Before relocating to Canada, Duggan was a semi-professional soccer player in the Irish leagues in Ireland. He is also an avid golfer and boxer. Duggan last TV appearance was in Sophie (CBC) where he steals the scene dancing with Natalie Brown (star of “Sophie”). His passion is the big screen and hopes to be living in L.A. in five years from now where he can help other young actors make their dreams come true.Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Member of Promote Wasaga.

TORONTO - Canadians in several provinces will soon see unfamiliar numbers on their call display as the country introduces a handful of new area codes to meet growing demand. The Toronto area and Ontario's Golden Horseshoe will each get a new area code next month -- 437 and 365, respectively. The agency that oversees the country's phone numbers says Saskatchewan will be next in May, followed by British Columbia, Alberta and other parts of southwestern Ontario. The Canadian Numbering Administrator says Manitoba already gained a new prefix last November when it made the switch to 10-digit dialling. The agency's director, Glenn Pilley, says the new codes are needed to accommodate the surge in cellphones and tablets, many of which take up more than one phone number. He says the country's area codes have more than tripled since they were first established in 1947, noting next month's additions will push the total to 29, up from the original nine.

Want a really fascinating winter outing, complete with a restored fort located deep in a swamp? Get out those snowshoes and come along with the Explorer as he heads to the Fort Willow Conservation Area, the restored palisade and building foundations of a War of 1812 military fort. Owned and operated by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, Fort Willow, on the edge of the Minesing Swamp, is open year-round. Make your way to Simcoe Road 9 near Angus and then travel along Grenfel Road to a marked parking lot. The old fort is just a short walk through the woods.Fort Willow lies on the ancient Nine Mile Portage, one of the three early 19th century gateways to the undeveloped west of the upper Great Lakes and Georgian Bay. An ancient First Nations foot trail, the Portage became a major connecting route between the settled southern portions of Ontario and the wilds of Simcoe County in the years before and after the War of 1812.The first heavy traffic over the rolling ridges and swamps of the Portage began in1814 when a company of 300 soldiers carved a wagon road out of what had been a blazed footpath. Once established, the Nine Mile Portage became a thoroughfare with extensive docks, storehouses, and barracks. At the portage’s western terminus was Fort Willow, a depot for military stores. Surrounded by a palisade, hundreds of tons of military and trade goods were stored here. Fort Willow existed only until 1850 when it was deserted. Rediscovered in the 20th century by Simcoe County archaeologist Wilfred Jury, the fort was surrounded by old earthworks, gun flints, broken rum bottles, and handmade nails. Lost in the pines, the Fort Willow Conservation Area is a great place to go snowshoeing in winter.

Forget what you see in the movies or on television. This is Wasaga Beach. Real relationships aren’t anything like what you see in the movies full of non-stop romance, candlelight dinners and whirlwind trips to exotic locations. Or are they?We all have to admit that good relationships take effort, time and commitment. They just don’t happen because two people have come together on common ground to form a relationship. Great relationships happen because not only do two people love each other very much, they also value one another and are willing to make an investment of time into the relationship, day after day, every day.So here’s a start. A small act of endearment like buying a card, buying a signature flower or a bouquet of flowers for that special person, a good foot rub or taking that special one to a good Wasaga Beach restaurant will go a long way in showing your partner that you care on Valentine’s Day. It opens up an opportunity for a good heartfelt conversation, a promise to spend more time together, a sweet “in the moment” experience together that you will carry in your favourite memories file for the rest of your life. As for yours’ truly, how can I possibly forget Valentine’s Day? I married my sweetheart barefoot on the beach sands of Puerto Vallarta on Valentine ’s Day and we celebrated our marriage at a mountainside heritage hacienda building restaurant overlooking Banderas Bay. I hope to be on the sands of Cuba with my Eva enjoying the sun and the beaches and celebrating our anniversary as you are reading this article. We will be having a few candlelight dinners and a little bit of romancing along the shores of el Bahia de Cardenas. So just remember that happy relationships are based on realistic expectations. They take work and thoughtfulness every day while happy relationships need communication know-how and work like a bank account. Creating a Valentine’s Day experience is a good deposit to place in the love bank for those days when you have to see about making a few withdrawals. I hope to be adding to my love bank account with Eva over Valentine’s week as we take our strolls along the shores of the Caribbean. We will also be listening to our Beach BOOSTER Radio Melody Room favourites over the internet from time to time staying caught up about the Beach while we are away.Beach Booster is certainly here to help. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at: [email protected]

Eric Dean, RVH Foundation CEO “Knowing the Lions Club commitment to vision care and preventable blindness, we were very pleased to dedicate a specialized eye exam room in the newly expanded Emergency Department. The Wasaga Beach Lions have been dedicated supporters for many years in supporting the expansion campaign – it is great to have them raising both funds and awareness throughout our region”.“In the five months from April 1 through August 31 of 2012, the Emergency Department handled 1,018 specific cases related to eyes and vision. These ranged from cases of foreign objects in the eye, eye injuries in accidents, inflammation, retinal detachment, chemical accidents and existing disorders or chronic issues. Clearly, the eye room will be very well used and we are glad the recognition sign will provide a regular reminder of the work of the Wasaga Beach Lions Club and your continued interest in eye health, treatment of vision and the ongoing work of eye health to avoid preventable blindness.”Prior to supporting this eye exam room with its first $6,000, Wasaga Beach Lions Club has support the Cancer Centre with $39,000 since 2005. In the hospital year April 2011 – March 2012, more than 2,400 separate Wasaga Beach residents were treated at RVH, including more than 246 through the cancer program.

fun and safe sledding

At this time we have our trail system up and running and have seen heavy snowmobile traffic this past weekend. Comments at the club house have all been great and riders have been enjoying all that Wasaga Beach has to offer. It was great to meet riders from as far away as south western Ontario to Dorset this weekend, its amazing how with today's advanced sleds and trails riders can easily traverse the Province and see what can only be seen from the trail. This up coming weekend is our first Fun Run in support of breast cancer and Wasaga's Snowman Mania festivities. Events are planned all over town as wells as at the Wasaga Sports Park so come out and enjoy the seasons diversity that make our town so great. As we enjoy a trail riding experience, please remember that trails are all two way traffic and trail signs are there to provide a safe experience to all who ride. As always ride in control, play by the rules.“Its all good , lets ride!” Ron Wheadon Wasaga Snowmobile Club President

The Canine Vision Canada program is the longest standing program. Since 1985, Canine Vision Dog Guides have been enriching the lives of Canadians who are at least 12 years old and are blind or visually impaired.

These Dog Guides are trained to assist their handlers in navigating obstacles typically found on most daily routes, including curbs, steps and crowds. With the knowledge that they are capable of traveling freely and safely, handlers feel self assured every time they leave their homes with their Dog Guide. The confidence that they gain allows them to pursue education, careers and activities in their communities. Canine Vision Dog Guides can be identified by their black leather harnesses.

The Way Wasaga Was The Nancy Villa...by Joe Bickerstaff

Another one of the once great hotels of Wasaga Beach was The Nancy Villa. The Mosley Street location close to what is now 3rd Street was just steps away from all the action at Main Street and Beach Drive, but sitting on the river’s edge opposite Nancy Island also offered a beautiful, picturesque setting. One of the original buildings of this hotel and motel complex had been moved from down river, by floating it to the hotel’s location. This building had a date inscribed showing it dating back to 1901.The popular hotel was owned and operated by Marjorie and Lloyd Dyer, who were known for their welcoming of guests to their modern hotel/motel, dining room and in later years, the licensed Port Hole Lounge that offered a great view of the river and our historic Nancy Island.Live entertainment was offered the Port Hole Lounge year round, catering to the summer crowds and the new found winter customers who enjoyed snowmobiling in Wasaga Beach and on the then frozen river. Although known as a great family resort, the Nancy Villa was also one of the many Hot Spots in The Beach, along with well know establishments such as the Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn, The Dyconia, The Dardanella and the El Morocco.I fondly remember Marj Dyer welcoming me as a part of a large group of regular young “guests” at the Nancy Villa on many evening as we enjoyed beverages and the great live entertainment late into the night… but then again her concern for the group to enjoy a healthy, full breakfast as we made our way back the next morning. The Nancy Villa’s reputation as a well run, family friendly inn spread beyond Wasaga Beach as many Collingwood families had weddings and other special occasions there. Former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker once stayed at our Nancy Villa!Although I enjoy reminiscing about this once great Wasaga Beach landmark, I am often saddened as I travel by its former location that is simply designated as “Nancy Lot”, a seldom used town owned parking lot.Yep… in a lot of ways, “they paved paradise… and put up a parking lot”!
