Parent Focus Groups A huge thank you to all the class reps and plus ones who came along to share their ideas about Warranwood and some of the directions we might take in the future. It certainly was a celebration of what we do well. It was an important oppor- tunity to share ideas. I think the wine and cheese went down well. We look forward to examining parent ideas as we work toward our School Review. ‘Beer and Bangers’ As a follow up to the Parent Focus Group night we would like to hold an evening for dads where they could come along and have a beer and a banger and an opportunity to share their ideas. The night will be led by Brenton Stokes, School Council President, and members of School Council. Beer and Bangers will be held 7pm Wednesday 23 rd July in the staf- froom and courtyard. Watch out for further information in next week’s newsletter but keep the date free. Parent/Teacher Interviews Don’t forget to book your interviews for next week on Compass. If you are having trouble booking please see your class teacher. Trivia Night Thank you to the team of tireless workers who created the fun of the Trivia Night. Michelle Hudson had organised quite a team to create the event. Two highlights were the art auction and the fact that the staff table came third! A fun night was had by all. End of Term The final day of term is Friday 27

th June. Please remember that students will be dismissed at 2.30pm and all students

need to have arrangements made for them from that time. Out of Hours Care will be open from 2.30. Special Religious Education The Department require a new permission form for students to participate in Religious Education. We are aware that fami-lies did complete permission forms at the start of the year but we require the new ones sent home today to be completed and returned by next Wednesday for those students attending RE to continue. One page is the permission form that must be returned to continue and the other an information sheet. Please see the office if you have any questions. Please note there are currently not enough instructors to cover every class.

Assistant Principal’s Report Trivia Night A huge thanks to Ron, Judda, Andy, Michelle and the all of the Parent Association team that ensured the Warranwood Trivia Night was huge success on Saturday night. Although the teacher team didn’t quite live up to expectations we at least put up a good fight. We will go back to the drawing board and set ourselves for a monstrous pre season to ensure a successful 2015! You can expect the cheque book recruiting drive will be on in earnest and I’ve been told there are no salary cap restrictions to be worried about. Although Steve might have something to say about that! Make sure you come along next year and have a great night out and support our school at the same time. Planning Week This week has seen teachers across all teams spend a day together planning next terms units of work. The opportunity to spend a day discussing student needs and developing curriculum and learning experiences is invaluable and ensures a collaborative approach across our school teams.

Wellbeing at Warranwood 9 Parenting Ideas for 9 Year Olds

Ask any experienced parent and they’ll tell you that nine is the age when their child starts to leave childhood behind, and begins to look forward to the upcoming years of adolescence.

Are you taking the developmental leap? Making the leap from one developmental stage to the next is never easy; it’s harder still when the move is from the relative comfort of childhood to the potential turbulence of adolescence. Being nine is an age of significant change, but it’s rarely recognised as such. Here are some ideas to help you make the developmental leap with your child:

1. Get ready for puberty

This is also a time when girls and boys can be vulnerable to body image problems, so be aware of comments you make around clothing, appearance and weight. It’s also a time to watch your own attitude to food and dieting. Better to adopt a healthy, balanced approach to eating than be constantly dieting.

2. Get ready for the future

Your nine-year-old needs nurturing, attentive parenting while at the same time being encouraged to take greater re-sponsibility. Help your child develop basic competencies such as planning their day and introducing themselves to new friends. These will help later with secondary school success.

3. Start the move from parent to peer

Nine-year-olds are usually keen to do things away from their parents and home. Sleepovers are increasingly common. However, peers can present a tricky proposition at this age. Many nine have BFFs – best friends forever – but these can change very quickly as good friends come and go. Girls (more than boys) often experience friendship difficulties at this age as the one thing they want in a friend – loyalty – can go missing.

4. Be ready for homework to rear its head for some

Homework can divide households at this age. Many boys struggle with the whole concept, while girls will do it to please. Good homework for this age group has a set purpose, such as developing required planning and organisation skills. Find out from your school what they are trying to achieve with their homework policy and be led by their guide-lines.

5. Provide regular pocket money

Your nine-year-old will appreciate getting a regular allowance as well as the ability to decide how they spend it. ‘Guide, rather than decide for them’ is the parenting mantra with pocket money. Resist the temptation to top their pocket mon-ey up if they spend it all on one item and leave nothing for the rest of the week. At this age, your child is capable of learning from the consequences of their decisions, and such lessons will help them improve their impulse control, which should have started to develop by now.

6. Model self-control

Another aspect of self-control is the ability to handle frustrations and deal with conflict. By now your child should be able to understand that conflict resolution doesn’t need to involve physicality or put downs. Encourage them to talk through any issues involving a sibling with you as a referee, for as long as it takes, rather than resorting to uncivilised and unjust methods of solving them.

7. Prepare them for when you are not there

Discuss with your nine-year-old the behaviours that are appropriate when adults are not around. Reassure your child that they can say no to another child or adult if they feel uncomfortable about a situation they are in. Increasingly, your child will be in situations in which they have to decide the right thing to do on their own – at those times their under-standing of your expectations will matter.

8. Start getting screen smart

This is the age to seriously introduce smart screen habits as your child will, in all likelihood, spend a great deal of the future glued to one sort of screen or other. Experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: look up every 20 minutes and gaze at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.

9. Look for supportive groups

Encourage your nine-year-old to be involved in positive activities and supportive groups such as a sports team, Scouts/Guides or the like. Attend these activities with your child and get to know their friends and their families.

BONUS 10th point - Maximise the opportunity: Make the most of the opportunity that your child’s tenth year provides. Make sure they are actively part of your family through the contributions they make. And, of course, make sure they feel loved, valued and understood. Michael Grose Connect Groups this Monday morning will be a celebration of a great term and highlight some of the fantastic thinking and work our students have done exploring ways to build our community. The key focus has been exploring friendship skills and building up understandings of bullying prevention and empowerment of individuals to make a difference when a problem occurs. This year our school is part of the Better Buddies program through the Alannah and Madeline Foun-dation. This requires us to implement a range of strategies and activities to support our student’s personal learning and development. Our Connect Group program is integral to the way we imple-ment the key wellbeing learning focuses across Warranwood and of course our classroom level based programs compliment this. On Monday we would like students to bring a game ‘NON ELECTRONIC’ to school to share during our Connect Group session after assembly. The quirk of the day will be when we have students tie themselves hand to hand with a partner to spend the session and recess together with a cross age buddy. This is part of the National Buddy Day initiative, Band Together! We will provide students with a ribbon for the day to unite together. See the blurb below.

To `Band Together', we're challenging teams of kids and/or adults to join forces, literally - with a ribbon, band or a scrunchie. By participating and/or raising funds, you'll be helping to support The Alannah and Madeline Foundation in our bid to reduce bullying, and create friendly and caring school communities through our Better Buddies program. The ‘Band Together’ challenge is a great way to involve your whole school – students, parents and teachers. It doesn’t matter if your school chooses to ‘Band Together’ for a day, or just an hour. This should be a fun way to finish the term and put all of our learning intentions into practice. Please see Shane if you have a query.

Library I have issued overdue notices to students today (teachers hand out) I would really appreciate if all overdue books were returned by the end of term. If there are any problems with books students have borrowed please see me, I am happy to be of assistance. Also some of the Library books are well loved. If any require repair please pop them back to Library for me to do. I have repair kits especially for Library books.(home repairs often use inappropriate tape and methods) I do appre-ciate the effort though. With thanks Kim Barlow.
