MAJOR CHANGES:

• Hazard Classification: Provides specific criteria for both physical hazards (such as flammability or the potential for explosions), and health hazards (including both acute andchronic effects.)

• Labels: Must include a signal word, pictogram, hazard and precautionary statements.

• Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Will replace the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and have a specified 16-section format.

• Information and Training: Employers are required to train workers by December 1, 2013 on the new label elements and SDS format.

The new Hazard Communication Standard is OSHA’s most comprehensive rulemaking in a decade and became effective May 25, 2012.

• Full compliance by June 1, 2015

• Ensure Proper Container Labeling

• SDS maintenance and use

LIQUIDS are the most common hazardous chemicals in the workplace.

“ONLY Use Non-Sparking Tools” is a new Precautionary StatementREQUIRED with Flammable Liquids.

• Solvents: Isopropyl, Methyl and Ethyl Alcohol, Methyl and Ethyl Acetate, Acetone, Gasoline, Diesel, VM&P Naphtha, Cyclohexane

• Petrochemicals: Benzene, Xylene, Toluene, Propylene, Ethylene, Methane, Butanes, Butylenes, Butadiene

• Hazardous Waste: Acetone, Ethyl Acetate, Ethyl Benzene, Ethyl Ether, Methanol, Benzene and Carbon Disulfide, Methyl Isobutyl and Ethyl Ketone

Failure to provide Non-Sparking Hand Tools can subject employees to “hazards that are likely to cause death or serious physical harm” and frequently results in OSHA Violations of the General Duty Clause.
