of pipeline systems

WANDA is a powerful and user-friendly program for the hydraulic design and optimization of pipeline

systems. Both engineers and operators use WANDA to study the steady and dynamic behaviour of

liquid, heat, gas and slurry fl ows in arbitrarily confi gured pipeline networks. The so ware can be

easily linked to other applications, e.g. for operator training systems or advanced real-time control.

WANDA has been extensively tested, validated and designed for engineers by engineers.

WANDA is a powerful tool that can be used throughout the lifetime of the pipeline system: from initial design, component optimization, control procedure evaluation up to commissioning and operator training. Detailed information of the fl ow can be viewed at any location in the system at any moment in time. WANDA’s intelligent components and standard-setting GUI enable you to carry out any hydraulics analysis in the most e cient way. Deltares has been developing and validationg transient simulation so ware since the 1970’s. WANDA has been licensed world-wide to many well-known pipeline owners, consultants and others.

Application areasWANDA can model a rich variety of fl ow processes such as liquid, gas and heat transport, cavitation and variable fl uid properties. Flows from less than a few hundred litres per hour to well over 100,000 m3/h have been accounted for. Typical applications include: • Water transportation systems,• Fire fi ghting systems,• (Process) plant piping,• Water treatment facilities,• Slurry transport and sludge handling,• Transport in mining industry, • Paints and pastes,• District heating systems,

WANDA Domains: a modular conceptThe sophisticated so ware architecture gives the WANDA 4 user access to physical domains such as gas transport, heat transfer (density, viscosity, temperature) and also multiphase systems. The Liquid module incorporates the former WANDA version; the well-known User Interface and other successful parts are basically unchanged.

WANDA 4 LiquidWANDA Liquid provides a wide variety of components from which most hydraulic systems can be built for each type of fl uid, no matter what size or operational conditions of the network. WANDA Liquid includes amongst others:• Accurate head loss of T-, Y- and X-junctions (Idelchik)• Newtonian and non-Newtonian fl uids (slurries)• Active components: pumps, (control) valves, air

vessels, air vents and pressure relief valves• Filling of pipelines• Free surface pipe/channel component• Transition of partial fi lled pipelines into a completely

fi lled, “waterhammer ” sensitive system• Advanced components: e.g. turbine, dynamic check

valve and inclined air vessel

WANDA 4 HeatHeat transfer and monitoring the temperatures in a liquid system is realised with WANDA Heat, making it an interesting module for urban district heating networks and process industry. WANDA Heat calculates mass fl ow rates, pressures and temperatures. • Full temperature dependent fl uid properties• Heat transport due to fl ow• Heat transfer to and from the surroundings• Heat transfer by dedicated components (heat supply

and heat demand) • Frictional heating e ects• Thermal expansion e ects

WANDA 4 GasWith WANDA Gas the transient phenomena of gas in pipeline systems can be simulated. The basis is formed by the conservation laws (mass, momentum and energy) and the equation of state of the gas, allowing to calculate the pressures, temperatures, velocities and densities as the primary variables. Typical examples are:• Gas transport pipelines• Gas well studies• Pneumatic systems • Air conditioning systems • Non-isothermal processes (convection, conduction

and expansion)• Abrupt phenomena such as choke valve break out or

blow out

Engineering modeThe Engineering mode supports the engineer with the most common activities in the hydraulic design of any piping system: • Accurate and detailed head loss calculations• Flow and pressure balancing pumps and valves• Evaluation of fl ow capacity • Evaluation of pipe diameters

and hydraulic gradients• System characteristics to

support pump selection• Optimisation of pumping

stations with the “Pump Energy” component

Transient modeThe transient mode allows unsteady fl ow conditions (waterhammer) to be investigated. WANDA computes all transient phenomena, including waterhammer refl ection, line packing and cavitation. The cavitation

model used has been validated in a large test-rig (1400 m length) and in the fi eld. Notable features:• Valve closure / opening• Pump trip or start-up• Varying pressures or discharges• Assessment of (operational) measures • Surge towers, air vessels and pressure relief valves• Air inlet and air relief valves

WANDA ControlWANDA Control is a very powerful module supporting all other modules with the simulation of the complex operation of systems. The control module allows the hydraulic system to be linked to a control system. This allows the user to evaluate the e ectiveness of di erent control philosophies on the hydraulic system. Notable features include:• Advanced pumping station controllers including

parameters for ramp-up time, minimum speed etc.• Activation of valves, pumps, etc• Controlling of boundary conditions• Sensors and generators (boolean or numerical output)• Conditional block (IF-statements and switches)

• Boolean operators (AND, OR, exclusive OR, NOT)• Numerical operators (add, multiply, functions, etc.)• Continuous controllers (PID incl. start/stop and ramp)

WANDA User InterfaceThe WANDA user interface is simple and intuitive. Components can be selected from a gallery and dragged onto the diagram. The hydraulic properties of a component can be specifi ed in a property input sheet. Calculations can be interrupted and resumed. All (intermediate) output can be shown in highly confi gurable time or location graphs using the advanced visualisation tools.• Intuitive look and feel based on iGrafx Flowcharter®.• Copy/paste of components, diagrams, graphs,

tabular results and input parameters • Text and background on di erent layers (diagram,

text, background) • Details or subsystems separated with the

connector-tool• Editable spreadsheet view of input/output properties• Comparison of complete cases with case-compare• Your own (company) database of hydraulic

component data• Animation function (movie) helps to analyse wave

propagation and refl ection• All property names can be changed into the user’s

language• Several unit systems (standard SI, US or UK) are

supported, as well as user–defi ned unit systems

Information managementAdded information makes a project easily accessible. Expert knowledge can be saved directly in the WANDA environment, available to all users at all times. Essential design information can be coupled to specifi c cases creating a unique link between simulation model and original data. This can be plain text or a link to other documents, such as photos, AutoCAD® drawings, Word/Excel® documents or a program developed in-house.

Furthermore, you can extend the WANDA help entry from a component with additional information and tips, e.g. on input generation or modelling tricks.

Integration and extrasExternal so ware such as MATLAB® or LabVIEW® can be coupled to WANDA by use of the “Open Modelling Interface”. OpenMI is a standard especially designed for coupling of numerical models by organizations leading in water management. Interaction with operator training so ware, real-time control or with mechanical systems is possible. Users wishes are a major reason to develop new components and options (custom components). Deltares continuously develops more components on request. For instance, the option to import Epanet fi les, originating from the daily use of WANDA at several companies, has become a standard function.

WANDA: Deltares expertiseWANDA is validated so ware developed by Deltares based on own experience and extensive knowledge of fl uid dynamics. Component modelling is based on physical performance testing in the hydraulic fl ow laboratory of Deltares as well as on site testing. Deltares uses WANDA for diverse and advanced applications like

for instance plunger pumps and even the performance analysis of a helicopter retract actuator. Deltares’ reputation and decades long experience are a guarantee for the high quality of this powerful simulation so ware package. Validation reports can be provided.Deltares owns a fl exible large-scale, Multi-phase Flow Facility (alpha-loop) in order to enable investigations in a wide range of academic and industrial multi-phase research topics. This includes studies of gas blow out, pressure relief valves and air valves. The alpha-loop allows for single-phase (water), two-phase (water, air) and three-phase (water, air and sediment) studies in a pipeline system of arbitrary shape.
