See You In September (at the fund drive)Alan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
How did it get to be September? It seems like we all just planted the gardens, turned off the heat and tuned in to Tanglewood. Now it’s closing in onautumn –arguably the best season of all --and we’re thinking about hunkering down for winter in the northeast. Oh, and we’re getting ready for the Great Fall Fund Drive, Early Edition. We’ve moved it a little forward (just) this time for a number of reasons, not the least of which are holidays, both national and religious.
I’d be fibbing if I told you I wasn’t scared. Every time, the same questions go through my head. Will people come through for WAMC? Will be still be able to bring in that $100,000 a day to make our million dollar goal? Each fund drive brings with it uncertainty as to whether people love the station enough to support it, and that uncertainty is what keeps me up at night. No matter how many people come up to me and say, “WAMC is the best station in the country,” and “Of course they’ll be there for

Everyday WAMC’ers
Do you feel that, WAMC land? The crisp air outside, the excitement of children walking to school, and most of all, the feeling of being a part of something larger… a WAMC family member.
We come from different backgrounds and all walks of life -- that’s the beauty of our community. So this Labor Day, we wanted to celebrate with some music that highlights who we are and where we've been. We'll start with the two-hour special Sly & the Family Stone: Higher. It’s a career spanning documentary intertwined with rare mono masters of their signature hits like ‘Everyday People’, ‘Stand’ and ‘Dance to the Music’. Sly & The Family Stone laid down a template that not only inspired an era of youthful rebellion and independence as the ’60s turned into the ’70s, but also had (and continues to have) a potent effect on the course of modern music in general. The special kicks off at 9AM.

you,” I still worry. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t.
Early on September 23rd, we will be there asking you, our listeners, to insure the future of WAMC. Like everybody else in America, we are still recovering from the economic downturn. Like you, we have had to cut back and do more with less. We know you have to prioritize where your money goes and it comes down to one fundamental question: are you better off with us? Do you depend on Joe and Ray, Ian and Jessica, and all the rest for your daily fix of news? Is the sound of a beautiful symphony on a summer night worthy of your support? Would your life be a little less interesting without Roundtable or Medical Monday or Radiolab or The Moth?
I am coming to you now, asking for your help.
Whether you want to join in as a volunteer, pledge online at www.wamc.org or call in your pledge on Day 1, (1-800-323-9262), we need to hear from you. If you listen, all we ask is for you to do something. Let’s make this one for the record books and for all you have done and are about to do, I thank you. - Alan

Then what better way to close out the morning at 11AM than with a dedication to the King himself… Elvis. In 1973, Elvis Presley recorded his last major studio session at Stax Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis. The special, Elvis at Stax, chronicles those sessions with the outtakes and final cuts.
At noon you’ll get your news fix with Brian Shields and Midday Magazine, followed by our favorite science geeks, Jab & Robert, on Radiolab.
We’ll switch gears at 2PM and provide a toe-tappin’ good time with Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This brand new one hour special features the Preservation Hall Jazz Band behind the scenes of their first-ever album of all new original material – That’s It – co-produced by Jim James from My Morning Jacket.
So join the fun, let your freak flag fly, and enjoy the specials with all the other WAMC’ers out there. –Katie

Financing Education: New Options, New OpportunitiesProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
In a knowledge-driven economy, education can make possible a lucrative and long-lasting career. But the cost of higher education is such that it requires years of saving to pay for a college education. Thankfully, there are several education savings programs that ease the burden to some degree.
529 Prepaid Tuition Plans: For a Specific State’s Educational InstitutionsIf the beneficiary of your education savings is likely to stay in-state, Section 529 Prepaid Tuition Plans may be the choice for you. In these plans, you actually pre-pay tuition credits that can be used at eligible public colleges or universities included in the plan. These plans come with many advantages, including no federal income tax on qualified distributions, tuition cost locks, no age limits, beneficiary transfer flexibility and gift-tax exclusion. The downside is if the student selects a private or out-of-state institution, you may not receive the full value of your credits.
529 College Savings Plans Let You Go AnywhereFor those who aren’t sure in which state their child will attend college, a different Section 529 option may be more appropriate. The 529 College Savings Plan allows you to pre-save rather than pre-pay tuition. Your contributions to the plan may be withdrawn without incurring a federal tax assessment if the proceeds are used to attend post-secondary school in the U.S. Many states offer taxpayers a tax incentive to use in-state plans, so carefully consider these benefits before investing out-of-state. Most plans allow low minimum and high maximum contributions and let the donor maintain account control. Special rules allow you to combine five consecutive annual gift-tax exclusions ($66,000 from an individual or $130,000 for married filing jointly) to make a single, tax-advantaged contribution, provided you do not make any other gifts to the recipient for the five calendar years. Such a provision can be an important part of estate planning.
Education Savings Accounts: New and ImprovedThe Coverdell Education Savings Account provides another option. The limit per beneficiary is $2,000. Unlike 529 Plans, Coverdell ESAs can be used for both K-12 and higher education expenses. These accounts also offer flexibility about who can contribute, a broad range of investment options from several fund companies and the opportunity to change beneficiaries. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also qualify for the annual $13,000 Gift Tax exclusion. However, the ability to contribute to a Coverdell ESA phases out at income levels between $95,000 and $110,000 for a single taxpayer and between $190,000 and $220,000 for a couple filing jointly.
When selecting an education savings program, make sure you understand each plan’s partiIndeed, each option provides varying investment options, estate planning benefits, ownership structures, beneficiary transfers, early withdrawals and income limit provisions. You’ll also want to consider your chances for obtaining financial aid because these assets will likely affect your qualification. It is recommended that you also work with the financial aid office of the higher education institution the beneficiary may attend.
Although the costs of education are daunting, try to focus on the value education provides. Find a way to start saving as early as possible because the gains from the appreciation over time can be substantial.

For more information regarding college savings plans, please visit www.collegesavings.org. Participation in a 529 Plan does not guarantee the investment return on contributions, if any, will be adequate to cover future tuition and other higher education expenses. State programs vary; therefore you should carefully review individual program documents before investing or sending money. Federal income tax on the earnings and a 10% penalty on distributions for non-qualified expenses may apply. RBC Wealth Management is not a tax advisor. All decisions regarding the tax implications of your individual investments should be made in connection with your independent tax advisor.
