Hello WAMC Land. As some of you are reading this, we are in the throes of another glorious fund drive. Some of you have already pledged, and I know some of you are waiting for the right moment. Perhaps I can entice you to pledge sooner rather than later by dangling the programming carrot in front of you. Not a fan of carrots you say? Wyatt, a lovely man with a lovely voice, decided that they’d do more. Last month, Pete, Lorre, mouth harp virtuoso Guy Davis, some other musician friends and a group of school kids took the stage at the Paramount Theatre in Peekskill, New York, and put on a benefit show for WAMC that those in the audience will never forget. I often say, “Everybody has a Pete story,” and there’s no doubt in my mind that in the years to come, this event will be up there with the famous “Weavers at Carnegie Hall” concert. “Remember that day in Peekskill, when Pete sang for WAMC? I was there!”

Pete Seeger, Alan and Roselle Chartock Photo by Lee Everett

I was honored to introduce the concert, which was called “Music Can Bring Us Together.” Yes, I teared up a little as I announced that the concert was dedicated to Pete's late wife, Toshi. It was a very emotional moment during an event that was so incredibly meaningful to me on a personal level. Like I said, Pete is one of my heroes, and has been from the time I was a kid at Bucks Rock Work Camp and first heard him play. As I sat in the audience, surrounded by WAMC listeners singing their hearts out, I couldn’t help but think of this wonderful station we have built together. Just as Pete and his musical friends celebrate community through voices raised in song, all of you who contribute to WAMC are part of a larger community. Wherever you are in the listening area, you are part of what makes this station work. Republicans, Democrats, kids, octogenarians, students or retirees, you are all part of a community that values excellence and critical, independent thinking. More than that, you are a responsible member of that community who contributes to its health and well-being.

By the time you read this, our Fall Fund Drive will be in full swing. When you hear Pete singing, I hope you’ll think about that sense of community he engenders and do what you can. A sing-along doesn’t work unless we are allsinging and a fund drive doesn’t work unless we are all giving. Do it in honor of Pete! - Alan

If you’re intent on waiting it out even further, I acquiesce. Here are a few morsels to get your salivary glands going when Columbus Day rolls around (and the fund drive will surely be over by then):

We’ll have a couple more Song Travels with Michael Feinstein and Guests. In hour one of the Roundtable, we’ll hear from Canadian crooner Madeleine Peyroux about her musical mentor Ray Charles, and in hour two, TV personality and comedian Wayne Brady will take the stage to talk about his major musical influences, Sammy Davis Jr. and Sam Cooke.

Plus we’ll get some more toe tappin’ music with the new special Willie Nelson Duets: To All the Girls. The one-hour program will feature comments about the songs on his new album, as well as interviews with the women featured in each of the songs. Guest recording artist include Dolly Parton, Norah Jones, Secret Sisters, Roseanne Cash and Sheryl Crow.

We’ll also have some surprises as the day continues, so don’t forget to check out our program schedule at wamc.org.

Enjoy the crisp weather, the little kids running around as pirates and zombies, and the bounty of apples at your local orchard.

Reassessing Your Financial Goals in the Face of a Changing EconomyProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley

With all the changes we’ve experienced in our economy in the past few years, you may be feeling slightly uneasy about your own wealth management plan. While no one can predict the future, just assessing where you stand now can provide some sense of relief. Here are some suggestions on how to do so.

Calculate Your Assets and Debts

Start by tallying your assets – bank accounts, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, business interests, etc. Then calculate what you owe to others – mortgages, equity loans, auto loans and credit cards. That way, you’ll have an up-to-date snapshot of your current financial picture. From there, you can make decisions more readily. Perhaps there are loans you can pay down quickly (credit-card debt is typically the biggest culprit of them all). Perhaps you need to move your investments into new areas. A financial advisor can help you make these decisions.

Deciding between Every Day Needs versus Wants

In our highly consumption-focused society, it’s easy to become too dependent on items we at one time viewed as luxuries or even frivolous expenditures. As with the above task, make a list of all of your monthly expenses and start to identify areas where cuts can be made. For example, while food is essential, maybe you should reduce the trips you make to that gourmet food store. Maybe you don’t need 200 cable channels or a hefty list of features on your cell phone plan. Whether you keep spending money on these expenditures or not, a complete picture will help you decide areas of less importance where you could cut back.

Tax Planning

A variety of do-it-yourself tax kits help you go through a sometimes-stressful process more quickly and easily. But is a “one-size-fits-all” system the best option for you? Perhaps working with a certified public accountant can help you discover ways to cut your taxes that you did not know existed. Many find that the money spent to hire a CPA over time more than pays for itself.

Outline Financial Goals

You may have discovered that your plans for retirement won’t pan out as you had envisioned decades ago. The painful first step may be to face the reality that this challenging economy means adjusting your goals and perhaps changing your investment portfolio. Meet with your advisor to see what makes the most sense in your situation.

Then, using some of the ideas in this article for inspiration, you may find that you can adjust your lifestyle in a way that isn’t nearly as disruptive as you might have imagined.

This article is provided by Thomas E. Brockley a Financial Advisor at RBC Wealth Management in Albany, NY, and was prepared by or in cooperation with RBC Wealth management. The information included in this article is not intended to be used as the primary basis for making investment decisions nor should it be construed as a recommendation to buy or sell any specific security.
