It is with regret that the club has come to the decision not to renew its membership of CAMS especially after all the work Bill Malkoutzis did last year to get a better deal for the club for which we are very grateful. The decision was reached based on support from the membership and the benets the club gets for its money. The key reasons for this decision are: 1. Bill can no longer devote his time to being the motor sport representative on the committee and no one else has volunteered. 2. There is very little if any interest in motor sport at the moment except for drag racing which is under a different organisation and does not cost the club anything. 3. CAMS had agreed to allow the club to pay the annual fee based on the number of motor sport participants (up to 40) not the number of club members (500). This meant it would cost $240 instead of $840. WWhat does this mean? Well, for the majority of members it has no effect. However if you are using your membership of VWCV as the club for racing you will no longer be registered.

and send it to our editor. It can be about anything, historical articles are always interesting and they do not have to be about VWs. Also if you have experienced any tech problems during a Resto or tried a new piece of kit please pen or should that be keyboard a few words and include some pictures if you can. Don’t be disappointed if your article is not printed straight away as we are trying to build up a bank of articles.

TThe rst weekend of March saw a few intrepid souls brave the weather to travel down to Kennett River for the Club’s annual camping expedition. Those who travelled down on Friday morning in their Kombis had fun randomly changing lanes in the high winds. Saturday was spent looking out at the rain from under our canopies while we fought the desire to pack up and go home although one less stout soul did break and run. As usual Sunday saw better weather and surf just in time for us to pack up. After seven years I still do not believe that Kennett River has surf.

TThe other major event was the VW shoot out at WSID Race track in Sydney, see article elsewhere. This was a good weekend of drag racing at an excellent track. It is a pity Victoria does not have the same facilities. Of interest was the number of water cooled daily drivers that entered. There were even a couple of the new Sciroccos. For once we were lucky as the organizers seemed to have picked one of the few Sydney weekends when it did not rain.

TThe 25 March sees the return of the VW Jamboree at Caribbean Gardens. If you have not been to this event before it is well worth the trip. This will be the 10th time this event has been run and it is a nice relaxed day with the opportunity to visit the market as well.

! ! IMPORTANT ! !Do not forget that the March General Meeting is at Berwick Volkswagen so do not go to the Royal Standard as you will have a lonely night.

Greetings, Volkswagen enthusiasts!

Welcome to the March edition of the club magazine. The new format seems to have been well accepted by the majority of members and therefore is here to stay. You will notice there is more colour now - this is partially due to switching to the A5 format as the cost is based on an A4 sheet not the number of pages, so adopting the A5 format gives us four pages for the price of two.

AAs we are always striving to make the magazine more readable, one of the things that helps is the variety of articles so I would like to encourage everyone to write an article

beetle 1200 sedan and promptly had it sprayed ‘Ming blue’. Imagine having a new Golf 6 sprayed aqua (or any other colour for that matter) today!

My father died when I was three and a half and my mother remarried when I was ten, in 1965. Being young I wasn’t allowed to go to the wedding, but my grandmother allowed me to travel in secrecy, provided I stayed in the luggage compartment behind the back seat in this very car, which she kindly parked outside the church from which I could see the highlights.

MMy grandmother never actually drove this car. It became the family ‘loaner’. My cousin, some time in the late 60s, put it on its roof and killed it.

Volkswagen again came into my life on my 10th birthday when I was given a large Japanese electric-powered red VW beetle sedan, which had a Perspex engine and you could see the pistons moving. I have an 8mm movie of this day. Unfortunately, when I was about fteen, I gave this car to a child visiting our house, having decided I’d grown out of it! It would be worth $300 plus today, if you could nd one.

TThe nal VW temptation came into my life when my brother was in a rock band and the band needed a van to transport their equipment. We purchase a 1956 Kombi from Carrum out of the Trading Post one night and on the way home, the y wheel came off. We should have taken it straight back, but being young and stupid, we towed it home! This set my life in motion – always attracted to the mechanical aspects of VWs.

My brother and I subsequently restored many cars, gradually becoming more procient in the necessary skills. Throughout the 70s, we bought and sold many Type 3s and Kombis using the money we made to purchase tools and panel beating equipment.

AAnd we were hooked!

It is amazing how VW really has ruled my life. I met Lyn because she brought her Golf to me for service, and now my sons work and run the business with me.

Lloyd DaviesVice President

Dear fellow VW enthusiasts

How did we all come to fall in love with Volkswagen?

IIn my case, it happened by stealth. My grandmother was widowed in the late 50s. Having never driven nor owned a car, she thought she should purchase one! From the rst oor kitchen window of her house in Creswick Road, Ballarat above her late husband’s engineering rm, the glow of Craig’s Motors Volkswagen roundel beckoned.

My grandmother loved aqua as a colour. She and my mother always incorrectly referred to this colour as Ming blue. So in the late 50s, she purchased a new white VW

Volkswagen drag racing returned to the Sydney Dragway (WSID) on 25 February 2012 after an absence of eight years. This was the rst round in the VWMA drag racing series, with the second round programmed for Warwick over the weekend of 29/30 September 2012.AsAs this was going to be over the ¼ mile instead of the 1/8 mile we have become used to, it was with much anticipation that the Loco Gringos set off early on Friday morning for Sydney. The Gringos had three beetles ready for the challenge. They were Mike Clarke in his yet unnamed car, Andrew Ermel in Grey Ghost and Steve Craven in Beetle Juice. The support crews consisted of Mike Cronin (Crew Chief), Mark Zellner (Mike Clark), Greg Harmer (Grey Ghost), Ewan Munro (Beetle Juice).

AfterAfter breakfast at Wallan BP we were joined by Bernie Martin whom we hope to see racing with his new turbo car "Sanchez" at the next meeting. Bernie is another Gringo who is from south of the boarder (based in Geelong) who may have his eye on joining the prestigious Loco Gringos. With a Mexican sounding car he could be on his way and having four cars in the stable would be good. We will have to see what the Loco Gringo Patriarchs think.

TheThe trip to Sydney was relaxing with nothing major happening which saw us arriving at the caravan park in Penrith about 5:30. After nally tracking down the details of the evening’s activities it was a quick change and off to Dino’s for Pizzas, a VW car show and meeting up with some of the other drivers and crew. Having had Pizzas from around the world, Dino’s would have to be up there with the best.

Saturday saw us up early and off to the track to set up and wait for scrutineering to start. It was during scrutineering that we found out about one of the underhand tricks some helmet suppliers try. When Andrew’s helmet was inspected we found that the date on the standards sticker on the outside did not match the date of manufacture, (2003 compared to 2008 on the sticker). Because of the class that Grey Ghost is in it was off to the helmet shop and $500 later back to scrutineering. This was a common problem with a few helmets being sold that day. With the helmet passing it was back to the pits for nal checks prior to the start of qualifying.

QualifyingQualifying went well with Andrew managing ve passes with the second pass of the day achieving an [email protected]. Unfortunately the top shoot out cut off was 11.85 sec so we still have a way to go - maybe next year. All cars made it through qualifying without damage so it was a quick break and back to line up for the nals. The nals consisted of a four round, round robin followed by a nal. Unfortunately none of the cars made the nals. Mike broke 1st gear in the third round however he still posted a PB of 12.7 sec pass. Andrew won two of his passes and achieved another under 12 second pass of [email protected]. I don’t think there are too many people whom Andrew has not told that he had two eleven second passes!Andrew has not told that he had two eleven second passes!

Which leaves us with the new Loco Gringo Champion, Steve Craven, with four wins out of four. (Loud round of applause).

With racing over it was time to pack up and watch the presentations where Boris won a prize for the closest to his dial-in. Boris was racing his Touareg by the way, which caused a few heads to turn. So after the presentations had nished it was off to Panthers for a late tea and bed. Sunday was another uneventful trip back to Melbourne ready to star preparations for Warwick.

It would not be right to nish without thanking Craig and his band of helpers from VW Magazine Australia and the crew at WSID for an excellent event. Thanks to all of you for a great race meeting and Loco Gringos hope to be back next year. Michael Cronin

Sydney VW Drags Showdown 2012

Wagensville 9

It has now been over a year since the introduction of the new club permit scheme for “Classic and Historic” vehicles. Many VWCW members have taken up the opportunity to put their vehicles on the permit scheme and the number is now getting close to 150 vehicles registered with the club.

Most members have taken up the option of the 45 day permit over the more expensive 90 day permit as many have found that the 45 days allows for more than ample use of their cars during the 12 month period. As many of the new permits issued last year under the new scheme are now coming up for renewal this year I will be asking that club members follow a few basic simple steps.

ClubClub members should ensure that their membership is paid up in full for the ensuing year and that the vehicle has been maintained in roadworthy condition.

The renewal can now be processed by the club permit officers, who are available at all regular VW club meetings, upon presentation of the renewal form for authorization and signing. Only the club permit officers Mike Cronin and Andrew Ermel are authorized for this with Vic Roads. Under no circumstance should a member sign their own permit.

RenewalsRenewals may also be mailed to the club post office box for processing by the club permit officers at the next regular committee meeting. To avoid delays in processing the permit the renewal form should be sent to the club as soon as it’s received by the member with a stamped self-addressed envelope to ensure its speedy processing and return to the member. This will ensure that permit renewals are processed on time and in accordance with the VW Club and Vic Roads requirements. The following are the requirements for new permit applications which can be easily be done by email:

WithWith the adoption of the new CH permit scheme the club has developed the following rules in regards to supporting a vehicle being placed on the CH scheme under the club's name. As such an applicant for the scheme will need to meet with the following requirements. 1. The applicant’s vehicle must be a Volkswagen and must be 25 years old or older. 2. The vehicle must not be modied beyond those modications allowed under the guidelines as set down in Vic roads data sheet VS18. That is, it must be Volkswagen powered and have an original unmodied Volkswagen body and suspension. Note that the VW Club does not support Engineered Modied vehicles on the club permit scheme. We however may consider modications that have been done purely for safety reasons such as the tting of seat belts and 6 to 12volt conversions. 3. For your application you will need to supply the following information by email or mailed to the club post box. o A description of the vehicle including any modications to the vehicle. o A current Victorian Roadworthy Certicate (RWC). Please ensure that the RWC contains the correct “VIN” and engine numbers and that the applicant’s own home address appears on the roadworthy certicate or is supplied with the application.(Most RWCs only have the repair mechanic’s address). The club does not provide vehicle safety checks in lieu of the RWC as this is not covered by our insurance o Proof of membership (club membership number) and a minimum of 12 month’s current membership paid up in advance with the Volkswagen Club of Victoria. o A photograph of the vehicle for verication on the Club's permit data base.

Once I have received all the relevant information and determined that your application meets the club’s requirements I will supply you with a signed original application form endorsed by a club permit officer verifying the eligibility of your vehicle for participation on the scheme. Vic Roads will not accept permit applications on the forms downloaded from the internet. Applications for club permits are only processed via email on the Wednesday night of each week and are subsequently mailed out to applicants the next day.

ItIt should be noted that having a car on the Classic and Historic Club Permit Scheme is a privilege and not a right and that all car clubs have the right to set eligibility rules above those set down by Vic Roads. The VW Club has set these requirements in order to preserve our classic and historic Volkswagens, and not to provide a cheap registration for modied or old cars which do not comply with the scheme.

Changes to Renewing your Club CH Permits

Wagensville 10

Due to the large volume of permits that are now being processed I will no longer be able to make myself available from home during the week to process renewals that are “late” or any new applications that are “urgent”.

All applications should be made by mail to the Club’s P O Box or by email to [email protected]. Club members should now be familiar with the new scheme and should you have any further questions please feel free to call me at any time on my mobile 0413 355 850 for any assistance.

This annual event is usually the rst big VWCV gathering of the year. Due to the increasing popularity of this event the organisers made it clear that this year only cars that are 25 year and older would be allowed into the show.

We met at the huge BP servo just past the Calder Park Raceway on the Calder Highway just after 7.30am. It was a very cool morning, in more ways than one, and I regretted being in shorts at that time of the day. It is good that it was a huge servo as there were literally hundreds and hundreds of cars meeting there and leaving in groups, lling up with fuel, having group discussions and enjoying the scene.

AtAt the nominated departure time we red up the 28 VWs, comprising a wide range of Bay Kombies, Split Kombies, Beetles, Karmann Beetles, Golfs and Type 3s, and cruised up the highway in true Germanic formation. The trick with this event is to stay together until we enter the Hanging Rock grounds so we can all park together. I am happy to report that we achieved this objective, not like two years ago when your correspondent drove past the un-signposted turn off to Hanging Rock and nearly got to Bendigo before I could turn around.

EvenEven though we arrived at 8.25am, all the prime spots had already been allocated and we ended up being put out on the main display oval. This is not a bad spot but in the hot sun the lack of shade increased the risk of dehydration which, for someone who had to drive home, was a bit of an issue. The usual format of the day was followed, park your car, set up any display you had planned, and head off for the rst of many tours of this huge car display. With over 3,000 cars it is just about impossible to see it all but most VWCV members gave it a good try. In the main area there waswas food available, car merchandise lines for sale with some items discounted by up to 40% and even a bar for those not driving and keen to combat the dreaded dehydration.

The range of cars was totally overpowering. There were Cadillacs, Corvettes, Fords including a GT40, GTHOs, Mini Mokes, Oldsmobiles, Plymouths, Holdens, Morris Minors, Minis, Jaguars, Lotuses and even a WW1 vintage truck with solid rubber tyres that they believe may have seen active service on the Western Front. Most members retired back to the VWCV area for rest and recuperation several times during the day before heading off on another tour of duty.

At about 2pm the sky started to look ominous and a few members were a bit concerned about the possible pandemonium that would occur if the heavens opened and all the cars had to go out the one exit at the same time. So our ranks started to thin out and I believe that most members would have gone by 3pm. It was a very successful, enthralling and exhausting day that I am sure was enjoyed by all VWCV members. The 25 year rule did not appear to have reduced the numbers at all. I am happy to report that we made it home before Countdown and the rain.

The Melbourne Club was invited to join Volksclub Bendigo for their annual ice cream run to Echuca. There were two cruises organised from Melbourne, one leaving Saturday and the second leaving Sunday morning.

Four cars cruised to Bendigo on Saturday, stopping at Heathcote around 11.00am to check out the Heathcote markets. John and Jan Stevens threw caution to the wind, abandoning their Kombi to trial their new old Beetle. While it took some starting, once it got going it looked beautiful on the road in its coral red paint.

JohnJohn having the trouble with his Beetle was a pleasant change from my Passat being the centre of attention in the mechanical department and I might add my Passat was faultless over the two days and quite a pleasure to drive.Andrew Mengyel was in his Karmann convertible and Michael Cronin made sure there was at least one Kombi on the cruise.

Chris,Chris, Wendy and Laura Abley from the Bendigo Club joined our group at Heathcote to enjoy the famous tandoor chicken pie at the Heathcote bakery before leading our cruise to Bendigo with a short stop at Lake Eppalock. Our group made sure the bakery ran out of tandoor chicken pies and I think Michael C missed out as I bought the last one and Michael was behind me in the queue.

OurOur activity for the afternoon was a long test drive in the new Scirocco. Wendy Abley, who works for Symes Motors, kindly arranged access to a blue Scirocco for an hour, so four of us went for a very enjoyable drive putting the Scirocco through its paces around the outskirts of Bendigo. The Scirocco is a great car in looks and performance and the test drive ended far too quickly.

Our Club was providing breakfast on Sunday before setting out to Echuca so after buying enough eggs, bacon and sausages for the next day we shared some pizzas at Tony’s On High.

SundaySunday saw us cooking breakfast next to Lake Weeroona. The second cruise of club members from Melbourne joined us adding another six cars or so. Together with the Bendigo Club, there were about 40 cars for breakfast. To make the cruise to Echuca even more interesting we were joined by other Bendigo car clubs resulting in about 30 To make the cruise to Echuca even more interesting we were joined by other Bendigo car clubs resulting in about 30 cars travelling to Echuca, including some Holdens, Valiants and a couple of American models in amongst the majority of Volkswagens. The convoy was quite impressive and the mini car show at Echuca proved quite a site as we enjoyed a picnic lunch. Lorraine and I walked to the wharf, visiting the blacksmith and wood turner before the cruise descended on the town to buy the ice cream.

DrivingDriving home we endured some heavy weather including wind and rain, with Beetles and Kombis being blown all over the road (the Passat is not effected by cross winds) but at the end of the day all were able to return to the safety of their garages non the worse for wear.We had a great two days in Bendigo and we would like to thank Volksclub Bendigo for inviting us to join them on their ice cream run and making us feel so welcome during our visit.

The club newsletter, the ‘Wagensville News’ has been a great road map of club activities for nearly 60 years. I am still looking for more old editions of the News to supplement the rich documented history (in preparation by the Historian) of our club. So if you have any old copies in the cupboard which you do not need any more please pass them on to me and I will give them a new life. The items below will hopefully give you an insight into some of the issues of the day and prompt a few memories of our long term members which I again wish to share with you. I hope you enjoy these extracts which are a decade apart for contrast and please feel to contact me if you can help in recording the club’s developing history.recording the club’s developing history.

……in March 1982Jon Edsell was the Club President, Tony Barton was Secretary & Vice President and Neil Tattersall was Treasurer and the committee had a comprehensive program for the year and the motorsport was intense. The highlights of the start of 1982 were again the Navmaker 1 event on the 7th March organized by the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC), a erce rival club to VWCV, and the VWCV Easter Bug In on 9th April. This again was a fairly busy month compared to winter months. The artwork in this issue was somewhat interesting! (Gary, can you remember who that was?)

TheThe ‘News’ carried two major articles about the Easter Bug In to be held in Melbourne and an article about the comparison test of a 1200 Bug and a Morris Mini – the VW costs less to repair, doesn’t break and gives a better ride over the rough stuff! Of note was an interesting feature on New Members – a certain Mr Michael Clark with a 1966 Bug – memories Mike!

……in March 1970DaveDave Mitchell was the Club President, David Evans was Vice President, John Mayo was Secretary and Ken Hosking was Treasurer with Kevin Hurford as Editor of the ‘News‘. The highlights of the month were the preparation for the Sixth All Australian Volkswagen Rally (as precursor to the rst Bug In at Albury NSW later that year) for Easter starting on the 27th March, the General Meeting was held at the Volkswagen Factory (a long time arrangement with Pat Whitaker[Past President] who worked there), VWCV Motorkhana in Talbot St Altona on the 15th, another Motorkhana on the 22nd and Interstate Motorkhana on the 28th. (Three VWCV Motorkhana events in one month, VWCV was motorsport mad in those days!) VWCV was motorsport mad in those days!)

The ‘News’ carried articles about the new VW 1600 range (Type 3). They were selling so fast that VW customers were waiting up to three weeks for some colour/trim combinations (we can now wait for many months to get a particular car from O/S, especially if it is a sort after model like the Scirocco). Also of note was Dave Evans’ prowess on the bowling Alley, he was clear leader in the VWCV Bowling Championship on 341 points! If anyone has some photos or more stories around these items, I would like to hear from you soon.
