Orthopedic Surgeon

Zak Knutson, MD Arthroscopic surgery of the hip is relatively new in the field of orthopedics. It utilizes cutting-edge technologyand can be a great optionfor athletes.

“”

Hip Arthroscopy FYI

What is Hip Arthroscopy? It’s a minimally invasive surgical procedure done within the hip joint through small incisions, using an arthroscope (camera) to visualize and repair damaged tissues such as the labrum.

Are Athletes Good Candidates for Hip Arthroscopy?Yes. While each patient is unique, hip arthroscopy can be a good option for a wide range of active patients, including athletes. In the past, many athletes with hip disorders learned to live with their symptoms, which often resulted in them giving up competitive athletics. We are now able to diagnose and treat sources of hip pain that we didn’t even know existed 15 years ago.

What are the Benefits to Having Hip Arthroscopy Versus the More Extensive Open Surgical Procedures?Hip arthroscopy is done on an outpatient basis. Patients benefit from smaller incisions and earlier and faster rehabilitation. For some athletes arthroscopy offers a distinct advantage over traditional open techniques, but for many, arthroscopy offers a method of treatment where none existed before.

What are Common Symptoms of Hip Injury?Pain when bending, squatting or twisting are often associated with hip injuries. Prolonged sitting can be uncomfortable or catching symptoms can occur during normal everyday activities. A careful history and examination will usually indicate whether the hip is the source of symptoms.

Are There Particular Sports that have a Higher Incidence of Hip Related Injuries?Yes. Football, basketball, hockey, baseball, golf, tennis or any sport that involves twisting or hip flexion maneuvers are particularly vulnerable to hip injuries. Famous athletes such as Alex Rodriquez, Kurt Warner, Greg Norman and figure skater Tara Lipinski have all benefited from hip arthroscopic procedures.

There are currently only a few Oklahoma orthopedic surgeons performing Hip Arthroscopy procedures. Dr. Knutson specializes in Hip and Knee Preservation. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine. He completed his residency at Oklahoma University Health Science Center and fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Department of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery in New York City. He currently treats patients at Oklahoma Sports & Orthopedics Institute in Norman, Edmond, south Oklahoma City and Chickasha.

For more information on Hip Arthroscopy or to make an appointment with Dr. Knutson, please call (405) 515.8090.

When I got back from drill, my friend said I missed a good party. I thought back to fast-roping out of a helicopter. Zip - 100 feet, just like that. Whoa! I just shook my head and smiled. If you ask me, I didn’t miss a thing.

Congratulations to Rob Boyd FCA Athlete of the Year Vian High School

On May 30th, VYPE and Oklahoma Wesleyan invited the FCA and the recipients of the OKWU FCA Athlete of the Month awards to Tulsa Oklahoma for the inaugural CLAY Awards at a luncheon at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.

For the past year Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) from the Oklahoma City and Tulsa regions have been selected for the FCA Athlete of the Month sponsored by Oklahoma Wesleyan University and VYPE High School Sports Magazine.

In addition, the recipients were all in the running for one of 5 yearly awards: the Leadership Award; Community Award; FCA Choice Award; Running the Race Award; and the CLAY Award for Athlete of the Year with the winner receiving a $5,000.00 scholarship to Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

Owasso Rams baseball star Trae Bobo is the Mazzio’s Male Athlete of the Year. Bobo, a power hitting third baseman, put up some huge numbers this year hitting 15 home runs and driving in 44 runs to lead the Rams in both categories. Those numbers not only helped to power Owasso to

a 36-0 record this spring and a Class 6A title but also got Bobo selected to the All-State baseball team. Bobo’s biggest home run this season may have very well been his last. With Owasso trailing Broken Arrow 1-0 early in the Class 6A semifinals Bobo crushed a towering home run to dead center in the third inning tying the game. Owasso of course then went on to win the game to reach the finals where they beat Norman North by a score of 5-1. Bobo plans to attend Oklahoma Wesleyan University in the fall and continue his baseball career.
