After the VPK POP

Improvement Plan Meet-

Follow Up

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

― Dr. Seuss

Lessons Learned

1. ALL CHILDREN entering Kindergarten must complete

Kindergarten Readiness Screener.

a. Teachers and Directors should pay attention to the assessment

scores ALL children, not just “VPK” children.

2. There must be OTHER REASONS for LOW PERFORMANCE

a. ONLY 7 out of the 30 Providers on Probation (POP) had child

assessment scores, or program evaluation scores that would

INDICATE they might be determined a low performing provider.

b. This information included scores from ELLCO, Harms, 4

Success, and TSG.

Lessons Learned

3. THE clock IS TICKING!

a. This VPK Improvement Plan extends

beyond July 2012

b. YOU BASICALLY HAVE March-June to

get “ready” for 2012 Readiness Rates

Lessons Learned

4. INSANITY is defined as doing the same thing

you have been doing BUT expecting

different results.

5. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

a.Teacher/Child Consistency - TEACHERS CANNOT

BE MOVED AROUND- they must stay with their

class.

b.At least through lunch and getting the children

down for rest.

c. ATTENDANCE: Parents must be your partner.

What can you do to strengthen this partnership?

Lessons Learned

6. ATTENDANCE:

1. Parents must be your partner

2. What can you do to strengthen

this partnership?

3. Would you like help TRACKING

each child’s attendance so you

can report to parent?

Lessons Learned

7. CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT: Observe your teachers and

ask the following questions:

1. Are you teaching according the curriculum?

2. Are you completing monthly curriculum

assessments to determine whether teachers are

teaching the curriculum in such a way that the

students are “getting” it.

3. What documentation do you have to demonstrate

this?

4. Do you know how to create a checklist to determine

whether your teacher is using the curriculum or not-

based on lesson plans.

5.Do you understand the term “curriculum fidelity?”

Checking IN with Your Teachers

ASK: What is your philosophy

philosophy of “teaching practice?”

(DOEs yours mesh?)

ASK: What document could I look at

that shows you are implementing the

curriculum, as it is written?

ASK: What part of the day do you

think you do most of your “good”

teaching?

CHECK: Lessons Plans to determine

match to curriculum

OBSERVE: How teacher “teaches”

if you cannot identify the skills,

behaviors, and concepts that she

is teaching- neither can the

children

Checking IN with the

Children

Analyze Attendance Have they been there 70% since program began?

Have you discussed attendance with parents?

Have you had a solid Parent Conference so that

parents understand the child’s assessment scores?

Analyze Pre & Mid TSG Scores Does Curr. Assessment scores match TSG scores?

Do TSG scores show gains?

DO teachers need help to understand how to read

assessment information (data)

Are children spending most of

their day in: Rich educational experiences that look like PLAY

Time out, in your office, being disciplined

Do you know which child needs

MORE time to learn Can you extend their day? Are they eligible for other

services? Can you provide a scholarship for

extended day?

VPK POP 1 - Parking Lot ?’s

“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too.”

Dr.Seuss

VPK POP 1 - Parking Lot ?’s

1. What happens if you are a POP for year 2

1. Need to get more clarification before answering this question.

2. Is there any financial help for children who need more time in

the program but are only VPK eligible (3 hours a day)

1. Several other Providers suggested scholarship this child send you had

the teacher there already.

2. There is no financial support unless they are eligible for School

Readiness

3. Is it possible to have a 6 hour day rather than 3 hour day next

year?

This would be the Provider’s choice and certainly one to discuss with parents.

4. How is mentoring different from coaching?

1. Mentoring- “I show you”

2. Coaching- “I watch you, show, you, watch, you show you and support you

through the process. Both require relationship and agreement.

VPK POP 1 - Parking Lot ?’s

1. If a child attends my program but moves to another

county is her score calculated in my rate?

1. If a child attends your program for a substantial amount of

the program- he/she is calculated in your rate.

2. Is the VPK School Year and Summer program POP

separate?

1. Yes. You could have a VPK School Year POP and a VPK

Summer that was not and vice versa.
