Nye + Brown is pleased to present Volumi-
nosity, a two person exhibition with sculpture
by Cosimo Cavallaro and paintings by Debo-
rah Salt opening Tuesday, April 9th, 2013.
Cosimo Cavallaro’s brilliantly hued sculp-
tures take the recognizable shape of beans,
seamlessly merging color and form with
sensuous ferocity. Working alongside master
fabricator Jack Brogan, Cavallaro has over
the course of a year tested a wide range of
materials and methods to refine the impec-
cable surface and intense colors. While the
artist certainly pays homage to work from
1960’s Los Angeles (a la school of Finish
Fetish—much of which “Cowboy Jack” Bro-
gan had a hand in making), Cavallaro’s Jelly
Beans resonate with an unbridled sense of
humor and joie de vivre entirely his own.
In a similar, albeit divergent vein, Debo-
rah Salt uses her predecessor’s concerns
via Los Angeles “Light and Space” artists
as a departure point for her paintings. She
paints twelve to twenty layers of colored
paint around the edge of her otherwise
white canvases, making an eighth of an
inch to one-quarter inch band around each
structure. Together, these bands generate
a “glow” that infuse and subsume the sur-
rounding space. These ever-changing lines
of color reference where the painting is and
where we are in counterpoint. The paintings
are hung vertically to the floor from the
upper left corner to the lower right corner,
what Salt has deemed “tip-to-tip.” This di-
agonal placement counters the surrounding
architecture and further supports the ten-
sion between the structure and the paintings
perceptual effect.
Cosimo Cavallaro was born in Montreal in
1961. The son of Italian Immigrants, Cavalla-
ro was raised both in Canada and Italy and
attended art schools in each country respec-
tively, as well as the United States. During
the 80s and 90s, Cavallaro worked as a
television commercial film director winning
numerous prestigious awards. Since 1995, he
has created a unique body of work from per-
ishables that have been exhibited through-
out the United States and abroad, such as
Chocolate Jesus and Twiggy in Cheese. He
currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Deborah Salt was born in Los Angeles, Cali-
fornia and attended The School of Visual Arts
in New York in the seventies alongside such
artists as Jonathon Borofsky, Chuck Close,
and Brice Marden. Salt has exhibited exten-
sively throughout the United States, lives in
Topanga and works in Inglewood, CA.
