Deer hunters the tem-peratures are finally get-ting where they should befor hunting deer. Coolmornings mean deer mov-ing more after daylight. You have till November 17to collect some venison. Maybe the rain, at leastthe really heavy stuff, willlet the smoke pole guyscollect some deer steaks.Rain and black powder isa good mix to cause a mis-fire. Be careful with blackpowder. It doesn’t deterio-rate with age and will fireafter drying out frombeing wet. If you find amuzzleloader in the atticor have one that is 100-years old check to see if itis loaded. If you don’tknow how have a gun-smith check for you. Aloaded muzzleloader thathas been that way for 150years will still fire if thepowder is dry. Daniel Earle got him-self a great buck. Chan-ning got a good doe forthe freezer. Tim and crewgot three. I don’t knowthe names of the youngman and lady that are in

Here in Tennessee, youdon't have to be a hunterto have an animal adven-ture during the fallmonths. Depending onwhere you live, you andyour vehicle may be in thesame path as deer, rac-coons, birds, cows, andeven bears. With animalcollision rates increasingdue to mating season, theTennessee Department ofCommerce and Insuranceshares tips to help protectTennessee drivers fromunforeseen and poten-tially dangerous encoun-ters with wildlife. “Your chances of hit-ting a deer while drivingincreases significantly dur-ing the autumn months,”said TDCI Commissionerand NAIC President-Elect Julie Mix McPeak.“Fortunately, there are afew things you can do tohelp prepare for the unex-pected; the first of whichis to understand whether
Collision Frequency IncreasesDuring Deer Mating SeasonSafety Tips, Check Insurance Coverage
you have adequate insur-ance protection.” Mating season formany animals is Octoberthrough December. Thisrise in activity significantlyincreases your risk of hit-ting an animal while driv-ing your vehicle. Moredeer accidents occur inOctober and Novemberthan the rest of the year. The National HighwaySafety Administration re-ports there are about 1.5million annual deer-re-lated auto accidents. TDCI shares the fol-lowing information fromthe National Associationof Insurance Commis-sioners to make sure youunderstand what insur-ance coverage you needbefore a collision--andhow you can enhance yoursafety when driving. Are You Covered? Damage to a vehiclefrom a collision with ananimal is covered under an
auto policy's optionalcomprehensive coverage. If you only have collisioncoverage or liability cover-age, your insurance carrierwill not cover damage toyour vehicle resultingfrom a collision with ananimal. The NHSA esti-mates damage caused bydeer accidents alone resultin more than $1 billion inannual insured losses. Tomake sure your vehicle iscovered for animal colli-sions, contact your agentor carrier to discussadding comprehensivecoverage to your policy.Filing a claim for an acci-dent covered by yourcomprehensive coveragemeans you'll still need topay a deductible. Afterthat, your insurer willcover the costs of theclaim up to your policylimits. How to Avoid anAnimal Collision These tips may help re-duce your chances of ananimal collision:• Deer tend to travel inherds, so if you see one, lookout for more that mayfollow. • Deer signs are placedat known deer-crossingareas. Pay attention andreduce your speed whenyou see these signs. • Be extra cautious dur-
ing dawn and dusk hours, when animals tend to bemore active. Stay alert andwatch your speed. • Make sure your head-lights are in working orderto improve your night vi-sion. Using high beamscan help spot wildlife, butbe considerate of otherdrivers when using them. • Stay focused whiledriving. Do not text, talkon your phone, or allowpassengers to distract you. • Always wear your seatbelt. This won't prevent acollision but it can saveyour life in the event of anaccident. What to do After anAnimal Accident Some accidents are un-avoidable. Knowing howto react in the event of ananimal collision can helpkeep you safe. If you areabout to hit a deer orother animal, hold firmlyonto the steering wheel, apply your brakes andcome to a stop. If you can'tavoid a collision, try not toswerve. If you do swerve, you could lose control andhit a tree or veer into on-coming traffic. After a col-lision with an animal,
follow these steps: • Stay calm. • If possible, move yourvehicle to a safe place andturn on your hazard lights. This may mean pullingover to the shoulder of thehighway. • If you can't move yourcar, or the animal carcassis blocking traffic, alertthe authorities so they canclear the roadway. • Document the inci-dent by taking photos ofyour vehicle damage, theroadway and any injuriessustained. • Check to see if yourvehicle is safe to operate.Check for leaking fluid, damaged lights, looseparts or other safety haz-ards. When in doubt, calla tow truck. For more informationand help with all things in-surance in Tennessee, con-tact the TDCI ConsumerInsurance Service Divi-sion at 1-800-342-4029 or615-741-2218, or visit us on-line.“Attention is vitality. NATIONWIDE Democrats rode to vic-tory in hotly contested gu-bernatorial elections inVirginia and New Jerseyon Tuesday, RalphNortham defeating Re-publican Ed Gillespie inVirginia and Phil Murphybesting Republican KimGuadagio in New Jersey.Fox News called the victo-ries “a shot in the arm forthe beleaguered Demo-cratic Party,” which hadlost four special congres-sional elections to theGOP since Donald Trumpwas elected president oneyear ago. At the same time, NewYorkers re-elected Demo-crat Bill de Blasio to a sec-ond term as mayor of theBig Apple on Tuesday, thewin coming one weekafter the city experiencedits worst attack since 9/11,Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbekistan native andISIS sympathizer killingeight persons and injuring12 after driving a truckdown a crowded lane nearthe World Trade Centeron Halloween. Meanwhile, Demo-cratic National Commit-tee Chairman Tom Pereztold Fox News on Tuesday
he would “unite the party”despite the allegations informer party chairmanDonna Brazile’s new “tell-all” book, vowing to “builda party that works foreveryone and uniteseveryone.” Brazile’s bookincludes a deal betweenHillary Clinton and theDNC that gave Clintoncontrol of the party’s fi-nances and provided her amajor advantage overBernie Sanders in lastyear’s Democratic pri-mary race. The Bureau of LaborStatistics reported onTuesday the unemploy-ment rate for military vet-erans in October hadreached a low of only 2.7percent, a continuation ofa long-term downwardtrend in joblessness withinmembers of the U.S.armed services. WhiteHouse officials touted the17-year-low as signals thatPresident Trump’s plans tojump-start the economywere working.
The sports world onTuesday was saddened fol-lowing a report out ofFlorida that former majorleague baseball pitcherRoy Halladay had beenkilled in a plane crash offthe coast of the state, hisIcon 45, which he was pi-loting alone going down inthe Gulf of Mexico. Hal-laday spent 16 years in thebig league, playing forToronto and Philadelphia, was an eight-time all star, and won the Cy YoungAward in 2003 and 2010,when he pitched a perfectgame against the Marlins, and later threw a no-hitteragainst the Reds, only thesecond no-hitter thrownin the post season. And the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service reporteda third federally-protectedgray wolf had been founddead in Oregon, shot, wearing a tracking collarand believed to have killeda calf at a private ranchearlier. The wolf wasknown as OR-25 and a$5,000 reward was offeredfor information on thekilling. The two otherwolves, male OR-33 andfemale OR-28, were foundkilled in April near Kla-math Falls and in Octobernear Summer Lake.(Killing wolves is a federaloffense, punishable by ayear in jail and a $100,000fine, and is also a state of-fense in Oregon, bringingupon conviction a year injail and a $6,250 fine.)

Moser said the expan-sion would begin withthirty days. City Recorder SherriMcCrary added that shewas working with Broad-way Sound to upgrade theroom’s electronic equip-ment that would include
four cameras, not just onegetting the back of theheads of the aldermen andmayor, plus ceiling speak-ers, and individual “on-off” microphones for theboard members. Heasked the board to con-sider adopting the state’sper diem rate and comemore in line with the ex-pense parameters of 2018. Davis said city leafpickup had begun and
would continue throughDecember, the driver ofthe leaf truck also thedriver of the brush truck,“so if brush is out, be pa-tient, we’ll get it,” he said. Davis also remindedthe board that the dead-line for submitting an ap-plication for a comingcommunity developmentblock grant was nigh andnow was the time to startworking on the details of agrant application. The lastone brought $544,000and a new one could beused for sewer systemrehab, rainfall and water
runoff drainage, man-holes, and the like. Alderman James Bled-soe asked for and receivedapproval to advertise for apart-time employee in thestreets and parks depart-ment and Saunders, too, sought and got board ap-proval to seek an em-ployee for the waterdepartment, the currentemployee resigning due tohealth issues, She then moved to herboard report and said thecity had placed a six-inchwater tap under Highway68 to the new justice cen-ter site. The new VinegarRidge water tank, the sec-ond of two on the 1,100-foot ridgeline, would bearriving in two weeks asconstruction of the mil-lion-gallon reservoir con-tinued. “And through the holi-days,” she said, “water sup-ply lockdowns willcontinue on unpaid bills.”
