NATIONWIDE The New Haven Regis-ter reported a 31-year-oldmother and former Con-necticut high schoolteacher was arraignedwith her husband standingby her side on Tuesday, sheanswering charges she sex-ually assaulted a specialeducation male studentfrom December to April.Charged with second-de-gree sexual assault, LauraRamos admitted to havingsex with an 18-year-old “ahandful of times.” President Trump’s at-torney said on Wednesdaythere was “nothing illegal”about Trump’s son, Don-ald Jr., meeting with aRussian lawyer in hopes ofgathering compromisinginformation about then-presidential candidateHillary Clinton, telling“CBS This Morning” nolaws were violated and noillegalities took place. JaySekulow’s commentscame after Trump Jr. re-leased emails regarding ameeting with NataliaVeselnitskaya, who saidshe had information thatwould “incriminate” Clin-ton. Senate Majority LeaderMitch McConnell said onTuesday he was canceling

the first two weeks of ascheduled August recess inorder to tackle the unfin-ished agenda of the GOP.McConnell explained thatmore work for the pend-ing health care bill was re-quired and senatorsneeded to resolve the debtceiling deadline and ad-dress certain nominationsawaiting approval. At the same time, itwas unclear whetherHouse Speaker Paul Ryanwould follow McConnell’slead as the House Free-dom Caucus applaudedthe Senate’s move, saying,“We will call on Houseleadership to do thesame.” Federal Reserve ChairJanet Yellen arrived onCapitol Hill on Wednes-day, facing testimony be-fore Congress in a firstmove to cut the federalbalance sheet, which hadgrown from $1 trillion to$4.5 trillion during thepast five years, the resultof an aggressive Obamaadministration bond-buy-ing stimulus program. Re-serve officials said theprogram was imple-mented to keep interestrates low and support acollapsing housing mar-

ket. Police in Chicago saidon Wednesday that “freesamples” of tainted heroinhad resulted in the hospi-talization of eight personsin recent days due to over-doses. No deaths were re-ported, police officialssaid, though a woman wasin custody as a person ofinterest in the distributionof the drug. Columbus, Ohio, onTuesday became “Amer-ica’s First Smart City,”winning the Smart CityChallenge and $40 millionin funding from the U.S.Department of Trans-portation and another $10million from Vulcan Inc.,a company founded byMicrosoft billionaire PaulAllen. With the designa-tion, Columbus waspoised to become theblueprint for the future ofurban planning. And “Shiny,” a pit bulldog that disappeared fromhis North Carolina homefour-and-a-half years agowithout a trace, breakingthe heart of ownerMichelle Davis, was re-united with his familyover the weekend, turning

up in California 2,000miles from home. Davisand her husband sent outpictures to every vet andshelter they could findwhen Shiny went missingand then a shelter on theWest Coast called. Davissaid she believed Shinyhad been stolen.
