Master of Ceremonies David Berkowitz read excerpts from a letter from Eddie Kantar, a long- time partner of Miles. “Of all the players I’ve known, no one loves the game more than Marshall,” wrote Kantar. “Marshall never gets angry, even when faced with disasters. He is an honest and honorable person.” Kantar described a hand in which Marshall played 7with A-K-8 facing a void. When they discussed it after the session, Marshall said “I was down five but they could have set me six. I scored my 8,” he related with a smile. Eli Borok presented the award. “Miles’ writing has benefitted players all over the world. Many of us were insired by All 52 Cards and How to win at Duplicate Bridge,” stated Borok. “What shines through is his love of the game. Ruling the Gameby Mike Flader

Associate National Tournament DirectorPlayed Cards — part 1Of all the problems encountered by players and

directors alike, among the most common are thevarious situations that can arise when a playercommits an irregularity in leading or following to atrick.

Let’s start out by looking at what constitutes aplayed card, bearing in mind that played cards aredefined differently depending on which player isinvolved. Law 45 deals with this issue.

1. In general, each player plays a card bydetaching it from his hand and facing it on the tableimmediately in front of him. In the case of theopening leader, ACBL states that his card isconsidered to have been played when it is placedface down on the table (Law 45A).

2. A card is played from the dummy whendeclarer names the desired card, after which hispartner picks it up and faces it on the table. Thedeclarer may, if necessary, pick up the desired cardhimself (Law 45B). A card from dummy must beplayed if it has been touched by the declarer exceptfor the purpose of arranging dummy’s cards or ofreaching for a card above or below the card or cardstouched (Law 45C3).

3. A defender’s card is considered to be playedif held in a fashion so that it is possible for hispartner to see its face (Law 45C1).

4. Declarer’s card is considered to be played ifdetached from his hand and either touching ornearly touching the table or maintained in such aposition as to consider that it had been played (Law45C2).

5. A named or designated card must be playedunless the designation was clearly inadvertent andthe player who makes such a designation changes itwithout pause for thought.

That all sounds easy enough, but playersfrequently disagree on the facts, and directors arecalled upon to determine the facts in each case toascertain whether a card is played. In the articles tofollow, we will examine some of the criteria thathave been established by the ACBL LawsCommission and other administrative bodies to dealwith what can sometimes be a thorny issue.

Convention card reminder• Each player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, arenot acceptable substitutes.

• Each player is required to have a conventioncard filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has asubstantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent roundafter convention cards have been properly preparedand approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing with thenext round and continuing until the restriction islifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at thediscretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSBe alert about Alerts

By Lynn BergThe Alert

procedure ispart of whatmakescompetitivebridge differentfrom playing ina strictly socialsituation. Ofcourse, whenwe play athome, amongfriends, weeither knowhow everyone

at the table bids and plays, or we don’t reallycare because we’re just playing for fun.

At the duplicate table, we are required tohave agreements, to describe these agreementson our convention cards, and to reveal theseagreements to the opponents in a fair and timelymanner. The convention card is a good tip-off towhat needs to be Alerted: what you check or fillout in black print needs no Alert; blue areasrequire Announcements, and anything in a redcheck box or on a red line asks for an Alert.

The proprieties for Alerting are really prettysimple. When your partner uses an Alertablebid, just say “Alert.” Don’t offer anyexplanation unless you are asked. It’s just aswrong to volunteer information which hasn’tbeen asked for as it is to fail to inform theopponents when you should.

Ideally, your Alert should come before the

next person takes action. If youforget or are late in Alerting, theopponent may wish to changehis call. Ask a director to cometo the table so everyone willhave his interests protected inthis situation. A delayed Alertis better than none.

Your side gets thecontract, but you still haven’tremembered that your partnermade an Alertable bid, butyour partner knows youforgot, so he should tell theopponents before the openinglead is made. Again, if theopponents feel the need, they should call thedirector to find out abouttheir options. If your side isdefending, you must wait tillafter the deal has been playedto speak to the opponentsabout the forgotten Alert.

There is also a properway to ask about Alerts madeby the opponents. During the auction, askonly at your turn to bid. You are entitled to knowonly the agreements the opponents have made—not what’s actually in the bidder’s hand.

A good way to ask for information is just tosay, “Please explain.” Never ask during theauction unless you need the information to make abidding decision on that turn. Don’t interrupt the

flow of the bidding or give away inferencesabout your own hand unless you will benefitfrom the information.

The idea of Alerts is to make the game fairfor all participants. If you keep that notionalive as you bid and play, you’ll find Alertingeasy.

Opening lead: ♥ABidding commentary: South would like to

enter the fray but his sordid distribution plus thevulnerability dictate otherwise. West’s raise to2♠ shows the same strength as a direct raisefrom 1♠ to 2♠. The raise of a secondary suit, however, guarantees four-card support in thebest circles.

Lead commentary: Questionable indummy’s first bid suit. An alternative is the ♦5,the unbid suit.

Defensive commentary: Once Northdiscourages in hearts (all hearts lower than the 6are visible), South shifts to a low diamond.North plays ♦A, ♦K a diamond to East’s queen.

Play commentary: East has five top losers, two hearts, two diamonds and the ♣A. The ideais to locate the ♠Q without guessing who has it.Both opponents are passed hands and neitherfigures to have as many as 12 HCP. South hasturned up with the ♥A K, and North with the

♦A K: 7 HCP each. If East drives out the ♣A, theplayer who wins the trick, in this case South, willhave turned up with 11 HCP and can’t have the♠Q and have passed. North has the ♠Q. East hasjust made a discovery play –driving out a “relatively”unimportant honor (♣A) todiscover who has a veryimportant honor, the ♠Q.

It took some doing, but Lauren McDow ofAtlanta, left, talked her grandmother, FrancesWeatherly of Stone Mountain, into tryingduplicate. Weatherly has played for 50 yearsbut only party bridge. She and McDowplayed in a newcomer game on Sunday, andWeatherly allowed that after she adjusted tothe new way of handling the cards and thedummy, she enjoyed herself. “I met a lot ofinteresting people,” she said.

Young player showspoise, confidence

FriederikeAch has beenplaying bridgeonly for abouta year, but sheexhibits thepoise of aveteran player.

It mighthavesomething todo with herworld travels. She was bornin Frankfurt,Germany, andhas lived inIndonesia andAustralia. She

visits the U.S. regularly. When she is not playingbridge at home in Bonn, she practices dance –including ballet and jazz.

She came to the NABC with hergrandmother, Angelina Fong of Cliffside Park NJ.

In fact, it was Fong who introducedFriederike to bridge.

The youngster visits her grandmother during

the summer, and last year she began to wonderwhere Grandma went every night. It turned outto be bridge at the local club. Since Friederiketook up the game, she and Fong have played atclubs in New Jersey and New York.

Friederike has also played some rubberbridge with her mother, Diana. She prefersduplicate, however, especially Swiss teams.

Duplicate, says Friederike, “is not like anyother game.” She also likes the fact that, induplicate, some of the luck element has beenremoved because “everybody gets the samecards.”

As for bridge, Friederike has a definitepreference between bidding and play: “I like theplay best.”

When Amrine visited the campus bridge club asa freshman, he found one table in play. Hevolunteered to help promote the club and he soonbecame the club manager, game director andcampus bridge teacher. Today, the club averageseight tables per session and is the only club inDistrict 15 to have earned two-star status fromACBL.

Amrine stressed the importance of the freelessons and free entry fees in drawing students to hisclub. He also sponsored a 299er sectional thatintroduced the campus players to tournament play.

David Banh, 17, of Annandale VA will be afreshman at the University of Virginia this fall. Heplans to major in math, physics and law, and findtime to play some bridge, too.

Banh learned to play four years ago fromfriends (neither of his parents play) and beganworking to start a bridge club at his high school. Hispromotions, which he describes as “veryaggressive,” were more successful than he expected.By his senior year, the club was hosting 16-17 tablesevery Friday afternoon, and he developed a mailinglist of more than 130 students who either play in theclub or have expressed serious interest. That’s nearly10% of the entire student body.

“We’re a magnet school for science andtechnology, so we already had a lot of students whowere interested in intellectual games,” Banh said.“The free cookies were a big draw, too.”

The cookies and other incidentals were paid forby the local unit, and Banh said this support was akey factor in the club’s success. Even moreimportant was the volunteer work of Leo Cardillo, president of the Northern Virginia BridgeAssociation, who helped Banh establish the freelesson series and run the club.

Banh said his high school’s class scheduleoffered the perfect setup for a bridge club. “We havea 90-minute activity period twice a week that allstudents are required to attend,” Bahn explained.“They can watch movies or go to club meetings, ordo something active like play bridge, so we’reoffering a fun alternative.”

The Junior Corps was started by Hall of Famemember Bobby Wolff to acknowledge players age25 and younger who are active in promoting bridgeto other young people. There are about 50 members.More information about the Corps is available onwww.acbl.org or by e-mail from [email protected]

Steve Bloom, South, played 2♠ doubled onthis deal from Sunday’s Flight A/X Swiss Teams.

The lead was the ♥8 (third from even, lowfrom odd). He carefully ducked in dummy andwon the ♥10, then tried to cash the ♦K and ♦Q.West ruffed the second diamond and East followedwith a suit-preference ♦J.

West exited with a low heart, ruffed by Eastand over ruffed by Bloom. He now led the ♠8 toWest’s ♠J. Back came another heart, ruffed withthe ♠9 and over-ruffed with the ♠10. Bloom nowexited with another trump, won by West with the♠K.

This was the ending:♠ —♥ A Q ♦ A 9 8♣ 10

♠ A ♠ —♥ K J 7 ♥ —♦ — ♦ 10 7♣ A 9 ♣ K J 5 4

♠ Q ♥ —♦ —♣ Q 7 6 3 2

West cashed the ♠A, Bloom pitched the ♣10from dummy, and East was squeezed. He chose topitch a diamond. Now what was West to do? Aheart lead would make dummy high, so he playedthe ♣A and ♣9, which East ducked ... and so didBloom. West was now forced to lead a heart to thegood dummy.

Had East overtaken his partner’s ♣9 with the♣J or ♣K, the defense would still have taken onlyone more club trick. Either way, East-West werelimited to +100.

So why was the position an immaterialsqueeze? In the other room, the North-South pairhad agreed to play a 2NT overcall as the twolower unbid suits. When West opened a strong 1♣,North overcalled 2NT to show (he thought) thered suits. South, however, interpreted this asshowing the minors (since the 1♣ bid wasartificial), and he jumped all the way to 5♣,doubled and down 1400.

So Steve’s efforts to get out for down oneinstead of down two amounted to a gain of 16IMPs instead of 15 IMPs ... an immaterial gain!

Percy SheardownThe late Sheardown received the von Zedtwitz

Award given to bridge stars from many decadesago. Ralph Cohen spoke of Sheardown’s manyaccomplishments. He won the first Chicago Board-a-Match Teams, now the Reisinger. He wasCanada’s first Life Master in 1948. Even moreimpressive, however, was the effort he gavepromoting and mentoring bridge players. Cohenlisted a who’s who of Canadian bridge stars whopassed through his bridge club and his teaching.

Betty Ann Kennedy“More than her championships, Betty Ann’s

demeanor at the table sets the standard on how totreat partners and opponents,” said Carol Sanders, who presented Kennedy. “Not once in 26 years didshe make a derogatory remark at the table. She wasalways a lady.”

Kennedy spoke and described beginning toplay bridge as a complete accident. At age 22 shehad a near fatal case of encephalitis. Duringrecovery she could not swim, play tennis, or do theother activities she normally did. Her doctor askedher if she played bridge and recommended shelearn to play to occupy her time. She signed up forbridge lessons and went to the club. At first shehad no partners, so she kibitzed until other playersbegin to ask her to play.

Her first tournament was in New Orleans. Shewent without a partner and again resorted tokibitzing. A director approached her and asked herto fill in with another woman in the Men’s Pairs. They not only filled in but they won! Shedescribed bridge as not only a life-saver but aticket to the world. She thanked not only herpartners but her supportive husband, Jack, a fineplayer in his own right, and her children, two ofwhom were present.

Kit WoolseyFred Stewart introduced Kit Woolsey for

induction to the Bridge Hall of Fame. Besidesbridge, Woolsey is one of the best in the world atbackgammon play and theory. Stewart stated thatwhen he did a Google search of Woolsey on theInternet, there were 30 pages of references.Woolsey contributed to the law of total trickstheory more than 25 years ago in his bookMatchpoints.

“Kit loves to tinker with conventions,” saidStewart. “Once we had a disaster when our weaknotrump was doubled. Kit came up with 26 pagesof notes on a sophisticated run-out system. Kit is abridge purist who loves the game.”

“When I was six or seven years old, myparents bought me a game called Auto-bridge,”said Woolsey. “I was hooked on chess and theywanted me to take up a game that was moresociable. Bridge has been a wonderful experiencefor me.” Steve Robinson also spoke of some ofexperiences with Woolsey.

Nick NickellSidney Lazard presented Nick Nickell the

Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award. It isnamed for Lazard’s late son.

“Nick is gracious and impeccably mannered,”Lazard spoke. “He is a fierce competitor, whichmakes it an even greater honor.”

“Bridge has been wonderful to me,” statedNickell. “It teaches you problem solving and manythings, including how to deal with adversity.”Nickell thanked Randy Joyce for teaching himbridge, Bob Hamman for teaching him how to betough and Dick Freeman for putting up with him.

West led the ♠4, and East won with the aceand returned the 9, declarer contributing the jackand king. Declarer played a club to the king, aheart to the king and a club to the 10. The contractwas secure, but declarer wanted an overtrick, sohe finessed in diamonds. West won andimmediately put the ♥J on the table.

Strike 2.Watch this space for strike 3!The Light(ner) was badThe theoretical aspect of bidding will always

interest the fertile mind. This deal from Saturday’sSenior pairs serves as a peg on which to hang ahat. I’ll start you off with a problem where youhave the South cards:

♠ J 10 9 5 4 3 ♥ 9 3 2 ♦ A J 8 2 ♣ — West North East South2♣ Pass 2♦ 2♠3♥ 3♠ 3NT ?

2♣ is game forcing and 2♦ waiting. Whatshould you bid now?

I can think of four possibilities:Pass: Conservative, as 4♠ should be a good

save and you are not too worried about a slam.4♦: Might help partner to judge what to do

over 5hx. If the opponents go on to 6♥, a doubleby you should tell partner not to lead a diamond

4♣: The certain way to get partner to lead aclub – but might persuade East/West not to bid aslam. If they do you can’t double – that wouldcancel the previous message and ask partner tolead a diamond.

4♠: Confident that partner will do the rightthing later.

I have an opinion about the best bid here, but

as I’m going to use the deal in a future issue of thebidding competition in Bridge Magazine, I’mkeeping it a secret.

Okay, this was the full deal:Dlr: West ♠ A 7 2Vul: ♥ 8

With partner advertising values in spades, themerits of Richard Katz’s immediate jump to slamare unclear, although had he bid 5♣ it would nothave been easy for East to go to 6♥.

Now the spotlight was on North. The only“suit” dummy had bid was diamonds, so withsome misgivings, the Rabbi led a diamond. Southcould win the ace, but now declarer was not hardpressed to squeeze North in the black suits forplus 1210.

The Sunday morningquarterback By Barry Rigal

Mike Kamil showed me an inference he hadmissed on this deal from the Life Master Pairssecond semifinal. He played 3NT as South.

Dlr: East ♠ A 10 5 2Vul: East-West ♥ A 6 5

♦ A J 3♣ Q 7 4

♠ Q 8 6 4 ♠ J 7♥ 7 4 3 ♥ 10 9 8♦ K 2 ♦ 8 6 5 4 ♣ A J 9 5 ♣ 10 8 3 2

West, Brad Moss, gave his opening lead a lotof thought before selecting the ♥7. Kamil, South, won in hand and advanced the ♦10, covered bythe ♦K and won with dummy’s ♦A.

Of course, you now have 11 top tricks. Howdo you go for the 12th? Kamil led a club to the♣K and ♣A. When Kamil cashed his red-suitwinners, West left East the job of guarding theclubs, so 11 tricks was the limit.

Kamil was kicking himself for missing aninference from the combination of the slow heartlead and the cover of the ♦10, which suggested

diamond shortness. This implied that West mightwell have an awkward club holding to lead from.

If so, a better play is to come back to hand indiamonds and lead a club through West. Afterwinning the ♣Q, you run the red suits and this isthe position at trick nine:

♠ A 10 5 2♥ — ♦ —♣ 7

♠ Q 8 6 ♠ J 7♥ — ♥ —♦ — ♦ 8 ♣ A J ♣ 10 8

♠ K 9 3♥ —♦ Q ♣ K

When you cash your ♦Q, West is forced topitch the ♣J, and you now throw him in with the♣A. When he returns the ♠Q, you’ll have to guessspades, but since you’ve come this far into thehand, you won’t go wrong, will you?

Second place in the GrandNational Teams, Flight C,went to Daniel Barrett, SheilaKim, Andy Caranicas andJeremy Martin.

Bracketed knockouts are the No. 1 reason forthe ongoing popularity of Mid-Atlantic regionals.our tournaments. Morning KOs, prime time KOs,compact KOs, dinner bell KOs, late-night compactKOs . . . no one offers more. So each knockout isnamed after one of our District 7 regional sites, oranother locale for a specific reason listed below.

Also, we are paying tribute to those playerswho gained fame and admiration within ourborders. Various side game series bear the namesof past bridge giants. (If you notice that MargaretWagar of Atlanta is not included, that’s becausethe ACBL already has the Wagar Women’sKnockouts in Summer NABCs.)

Here’s what’s behind the names, inchronological order.

Atlanta KOs: Your hosts, of course, andusually the site of the ACBL’s largest Labor Dayregional. This year, however, the Atlanta Regionalwill be even more festive, running Dec. 26through Jan. 1, including a big New Year’s Eveparty.

Lou Bluhm Side Game Series: For thosewho played tournament bridge in the Seventiesand Eighties, you know that no one betterexemplified our game than Lou Bluhm. He wasone of this country’s leading players, winningnumerous NABC pair and team titles. But Loumight best be remembered as a player whoseethics and professionalism were beyond reproach.A member of the ACBL Hall of Fame, he won thefirst ACBL Distinguished Player Award — anaward that was created because of Lou. He died in1990.

Coastal Georgia KOs: Unit 202 covers aneastern swath of the state and has been host toregionals in Augusta, Jekyll Island and Savannah, most recently last October at Jekyll.

Chuck Whidden Side Game Series: Abehind-the-scenes pioneer in many aspects of thegame, Chuck was best known as the Mid-Atlantic’s first web master. He was a tireless, unselfish worker who sought no recognition. AfterChuck’s death in 2003, his wife, Kathy, said thatChuck was most proud of being voted the GeorgiaState Unit Sportsman of the Year. Kathy, anaward- winning director, retired this year . . .although she is overseeing the information desk atthis tournament.

Gatlinburg KOs: ACBL seven-day regionalrecord-setter for four consecutive years. Is a10,000 table regional possible?

Knoxville KOs: The center of Unit 165,which hosts Gatlinburg every year and providesmany of the volunteers. Knoxville also runs two ofthe district’s larger sectionals each year in the city-owned bridge center.

Bernard Warshauer Side Game Series:Bernard, a well-known judge from Sumter SC,was a five-term district director, from 1979 until1994. He served in various other volunteer andadministrative positions and was a member of theACBL Goodwill Committee. Bernard died in1998.

Columbia KOs: The Mid-Atlantic holds aregional in Columbia every three to six years, andthe hosts always do a great job. We return Oct.16–22, 2006.

Charlotte KOs: The last Charlotte Regionalwas 10 years ago — when, as this year, there wasan Atlanta NABC and the Labor Day regionallanded in Charlotte. We’ve got a great new site forthe Aug. 30–Sept. 5 tournament, one we alreadyhave booked for autumn 2007.

Morganton KOs: Eldon and Susie Claymanmoved here in 1992, set up a bridge club in thebasement of their home, and put this foothills townon the bridge map. The unit has fewer than 250members, yet hosts four sectionals a year Ñaveraging close to 300 tables each — withunparalleled hospitality.

Hilton Head KOs: Always one of our mostpopular sites, and it will be one of the ACBL’s

largest regionals next year. Schedule yourmidwinter respite for Feb. 6–12.

Bobby McMahan Side Game Series: A pastDistrict 7 president and our district director from1994 until his death in 1997, Bobby was alongtime force in South Carolina bridge. A skilledplayer, teacher and goodwill ambassador, he wasone of our most outgoing and popular officials.

Myrtle Beach KOs: Ever since our lastregional in 1999, one of the most asked questionshas been, “When are we going back?” The answer:Dec. 5–11. A brand-new Marriott property on thebeach is our venue, and we’ll return for the 2008and 2010 New Year’s regionals.

Washington Side Game Series: The nation’scapital is the District 6 capital, too. The nextNABC is Summer 2009.

Macon KOs: The most active bridge group inUnit 114 outside Atlanta is 90 miles south. Twoopen and one non-LM sectional are run each yearat the new clubhouse, the product of fund- raisingand generosity in the bridge community earlierthis decade.

Raleigh KOs: Our Memorial Day regional ineven-number years, and it’s always the largest inthe ACBL. Next: May 23–29, 2006.

Jerry Machlin Side Game Series: Jerry isidentified with District 6, but as the foundingfather of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference, healso had a great impact on District 7. Jerry, alongtime and colorful director, died in 1997.

Cape Fear KOs: Regionals in February ofodd-number years are held in downtownWilmington, a fun and easy-to-get-around site.Next: Feb. 19–25, 2007.

Greenville KOs: District 7’s most recentregional (June) was in downtown Greenville, closeto the geographical center of our district. Wereturn June 11–17, 2007.

Nashville KOs: A tip of the hat to District 10,which reciprocates with District 7 in advertising, publicity and fund-raising. Our neighbors havecontributed to hospitality here, just as District 7 iscontributing to hospitality at the Summer 2007NABC in Nashville.

Chattanooga KOs: One of our infrequent butreliable regional sites. Next visit to the Choo Choois Dec. 1–7, 2008.

Billy Woodson Side Game Series: Bestknown around the Charlotte area, Billy is a formerMid- Atlantic president and was our districtdirector from 1973 until 1979. He served asspecial consultant to the ACBL one year and is inthe South Carolina bridge hall of fame. He isinventor of the Woodson Two-Way No-Trump.

Charleston Strati-Flighted Swiss Teams:The site of our inaugural New Year’s regional in2003, Charleston instantly became the ACBL’smost popular. Attendance soared this year, andwe’ll be back to ring in 2007 and 2009.

The Spingold Master Knockout Teams, firstknown as the Challenge Knockout Teams, wascontested for the Asbury Park Trophy in the earlydays.

The runner-up team in the regularly scheduledportion of the event had the right to challenge thewinners to a playoff. This right was never utilized.

In 1934, 1936 and 1937, the Masters Teams-of-Four and the Asbury Park Trophy were separateevents, providing two sets of winners.

In 1938 the event became the Spingold MasterKnockout Teams and a part of the Summer NABC.

At one time, the Spingold was a doubleelimination event, usually lasting nine or 10sessions. It was scored by International MatchPoints and was restricted to players with 100 ormore masterpoints.

In 1965, the double elimination method wasreplaced by three qualifying sessions(subsequently reduced to two), followed by singleelimination knockout matches. The preliminaryqualifying session were dropped in 1970.

The Spingold Trophy, donated by Nathan B.Spingold in 1934; the Vanderbilt Trophy, awardedto the winners of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teamsat the Spring NABC, and the Reisinger MemorialTrophy, donated by the Greater New York BridgeAssociation in memory of Curt H. Reisinger andawarded to the winners of the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, are ACBL’s most highly prized teamtrophies.

Spingold (1886-1958), a New York publicist, motion picture executive and patron of the arts, was one of the most influential men in bridgeadministration from 1937 to 1943.

Born in Chicago, he became a reporter on TheChicago Examiner, The Chicago Record Heraldand The Chicago Tribune. Spingold’s interest inshow business brought him to New York City inthe Thirties.

In 1932 he joined Columbia Pictures in apublic relations capacity. He was named to theboard of directors in 1940 and three years laterwas appointed vice president in charge ofadvertising, publicity and development. Hebecame a vice president of the company in 1954.

Active in bridge from its earliest days,Spingold was named ABL Honorary Member in1936. He was instrumental in effecting a peacefulmerger between the American Bridge League andthe United States Bridge Association in 1937 andbecame president of the newly formed AmericanContract Bridge League the following year.

He served for many years on the League’sBoard of Governors and Board of Directors.Spingold was also president of the Cavendish Clubin New York.

Dlr: West ♠ K J 6 3Vul: N-S ♥ K 10 6 5

♦ J 2♣ A 9 8

♠ 7 4 2♥ A 8♦ A♣ K Q 10 7 6 3 2

West North East South3♦ Pass 4♦ 5♣All Pass

This is how the auction should have gone butinstead South passed, scoring a meager plus 50,when only a spade lead defeats 5♣.

Suppose West leads a normal diamond, won bySouth with the ace. After drawing trumps, declarermay rely on West having a doubleton heart honor. Ifhe does, he makes his contract by playing off the ♥Aand ♥K, ruffing dummy’s remaining diamond andthen leading a spade in:

♠ K J 6 3♥ 10 6 ♦ — ♣ 9

♠ 10 9 8 ♠ A Q 5♥ — ♥ Q 9 7 ♦ K 9 8 5 ♦ Q ♣ — ♣ —

♠ 7 4 2♥ — ♦ — ♣ Q 10 7 6

South now leads a low spade, playing the jackfrom dummy to endplay East. A major suit return setsup a winner in dummy for the 11th trick, as does adiamond, for it concedes a ruff and discard.

While this plan is an admirable one, it is not bestfor you would fail when the full deal was:

♠ K J 6 3♥ K 10 6 5♦ J 2♣ A 9 8

♠ 10 9 8 ♠ A Q 5♥ 9 4 ♥ Q J 7 3 2♦ K 10 9 8 5 4 3 ♦ Q 7 6♣ 4 ♣ J 5

♠ 7 4 2♥ A 8♦ A♣ K Q 10 7 6 3 2

Now you have to play to reach this ending:

♠ K J 6♥ K 10 6♦ J♣ —

♠ 10 9 8 ♠ A Q 5♥ 9 4 ♥ Q J 7♦ K 10 ♦ Q♣ — ♣ —

♠ 7 4 2♥ A 8♦ — ♣ 6 2

Dummy’s throws the ♦J on the penultimate cluband East is in trouble. If he parts with a spade, Southducks a spade, ruffs the diamond return, throwing alow heart from dummy, and then ducks anotherspade. East has only hearts left, so declarer makes thelast three tricks. A heart discard is immediately fatal –declarer plays the

♥A and ♥K to set up the 10. So, that leaves adiamond. Now one way home is to cash the tophearts, ruff a heart and then lead a spade to the jack.East takes the ♠A and ♠Q, but dummy takes the lasttrick with the ♠K.

On a final note, you need East to guard heartsalone if you are to make 5♣ when, as seems likely,East holds the ♠A Q. The odds of East doing so byholding five hearts is about three times as likely tooccur when compared to the chance of his holdingexactly four hearts to the Q-J.

who manages real estate at home in Brookline, found out via cell phone. Gladyszak, rooming at thetournament with Jonathan Steinberg of the ACBLBoard of Directors, had gone to sleep after a dinnerdate. He was awakened by his roommate and giventhe glad tidings.

McDevitt and Gladyszak are not a regularpartnership, although they did win a trip to Hawaiiin 1983 in the Grand National Pairs (now NorthAmerican Pairs). McDevitt said they haven’t playedtogether in another major event since then.

Gladyszak, who lives in Chelsea MA, works forthe U.S. government and runs a couple of bridgegames – in Lynnfield and Hamilton in the Bostonarea.

He expressed thanks to all his partners “forputting up with me,” especially John Saxe ofHudson MA
