3♦ 6NT All PassWest starts with the ♦K.

North’s 6NT bid isa reasonable gamblethat West didn’t overcallwith the ♦A K. Afterthe diamond is led, declarer, with only onediamond stopper, isfeeling somewhatnervous. She counts hersure winners and findsthree spades, threehearts, one diamond andtwo sure club winners.

She needs three more to make 12 tricks. Sherecognizes instantly that everything depends onlocating the ♣Q and getting three extra tricks in theclub suit.

Short of peeking at the opponents’ hands, whatare her options? Does she simply finesse, prayingand guessing all the while? Does she recite thenursery rhyme “Eight ever, nine never” in the hopethat the ♣Q will drop? Nursery rhymes work for

children, but not always at the bridgetable! Alternatively, since Westpreempted 3♦, he probably has ashortage in clubs. Should declarertherefore expect East to have ♣Q x x (x)?

Perhaps there is somethingdeclarer can do to make guessingunnecessary. When faced with thepossibility of a finesse, try to postponethat action until you have moreinformation about the deal. After all, finesses work only 50% of the timeunless you have the ear of the Big Guy,of course!

Declarer should plan to play clubs, the problem suit, last, and extract asmuch information as possible along theway. To start with, South should duckthe ♦K at trick one. There is absolutelyno hope of scoring 13 tricks on thisdeal. So South ducks trick one and West continueswith the ♦Q. East shows out and South wins thesecond trick.

Counting is arduous at any level. Whencounting out a hand, it is much easier to focus onone opponent, generally the one with the knownlong suit. When East shows out in diamonds, declarer knows that West started with sevendiamonds. Declarer can focus all her attention onWest from now on.

Declarer continues by playing three rounds ofspades, a non-problem suit, noting that West showsout on the third round. Next she plays three roundsof hearts. West shows out yet again on the thirdround. Let’s tally up the known cards to date: Weststarted with seven diamonds, two spades and twohearts; ergo, he is marked with only two clubs.

Since declarer and dummy have a total of nineclubs, we now know that clubs are breaking 2-2.We can play the club suit with impunity, certainthat the ♣Q will fall under the ace andking. Thatensures 12 tricks and the contract! The full deal:

Opening lead: ♥Q.Bidding commentary: 3♦ is a game-forcing

splinter jump. It describes a game-forcing spaderaise with a singleton diamond. 4♣ is a cuebid, and 4NT was Five Ace Blackwood! Playing thisconvention, the king of the agreed suit counts asan ace! So there are five aces! The 5♣ responseshows one ace (the ♠K), and East bids slamexpecting West to have both black kings.

If you like this version of Blackwood, youwill probably like Key Card Blackwood as well.In that version both the king and the queen of theagreed suit can be shown or denied.

Defensive commentary: Although a diamond

lead would have defeated the contract, a heart leadlooks normal.

Play commentary: It looks for all the world asif there is a diamond and a heart loser, but there is achance! Declarer must hope that the defender withthe ♦A has fewer than three hearts.

Declarer wins the opening lead, draws trump, strips clubs, cashes a second heart (key play) andexits a diamond, an equal length suit. Sure enough,South, the player with the ♦A, had two hearts and is

Bridge detective – or who’s got the queen

by Barbara Seagram

forced to lead a diamond, allowing West to discardhis remaining heart while ruffing in dummy.

Holding the A-K-x-(x)-(x) opposite three lowcards in a side suit in a trump contract does notnecessarily mean a loser! If the hand can bestripped and the ace and king cashed before thethrow-in, the player being throw in may be void inthe A-K suit (South has no more hearts) and beforced to concede a ruff and a sluff. Something tothink about.

His longest stint under water was 76 days. “Wewere hiding from the Russians,” he says.

Hendricks got serious about duplicate in 1983,when the Navy sent him to Bremerton WA and hisfamily, on the East Coast, were not scheduled to joinhim right away. “I needed something to do,” hesays. He found a bridge club “and I made myexecutive officer play with me.”

Hendricks retired from the Navy in 1995 andstarted a bridge club in Virginia Beach to stay busyin retirement. His wife, Lila, does not play. “Wehave an agreement,” he says. “I don’t touch hersewing machine and she doesn’t play bridge.”

He says his military background has helped himas a TD – most of the time. “Sometimes the playersdon’t want to be told what to do,” he says.

Hendricks says his TD career has beeninfluenced by Edith McMullin and other directors inthe area, including Michael Carroad, Doug Groveand Millard Nachtwey.

He says he especially enjoys working regionalswhere Nachtwey is the director in charge. “Millardlets you do everything,” Hendricks says.

The biter bit!By Barry Rigal

Bruce Ferguson is used to being the hero, buthe is also refreshingly good at reporting hisopponents’ good results. He was quick off themark to praise Peter Weichsel on this deal fromthe second qualifying session of the von ZedtwitzLife Master Pairs. Weichsel was playing withHansa Narasimhan (hands rotated). Ferguson wasEast.Dlr: East ♠ J 4 3Vul: Both ♥ Q 6 5 4 3

Weichsel reached the heart game after openingthe South hand, and Ferguson’s partner startedwith a club, allowing the defenders to take thefirst three tricks. At trick four, Ferguson exitedwith a diamond to dummy. Weichsel cashed the♥A and ♥K, then played the diamond queen todummy’s ace, then played a spade to the queenand West’s ace. On the spade return, this was theposition:

♠ 7 5 2 ♠ K 9♥ — ♥ —♦ 8 ♦ J 10 7♣ 9 ♣ —

♠ 10♥ 9 7 2♦ 9♣ —

When Weichsel played low from dummy,Ferguson assumed declarer had started with3=5=2=3 shape, so it could not cost to put in the♠9. He knows better now.

Had Weichsel gone two down, the resultwould have been one matchpoint out of 25. Onedown was average.

Wagar KO starts todayThe Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams begins

today, and at stake is the Wagar Trophy, whichhonors one of the all-time great players.

Margaret Wagar (1902-1990), inducted into theACBL Bridge Hall of Famein 1999, became Life Master#37 in 1943, the fifth womanto earn the rank. She and KayRhodes share one of the mostremarkable achievements inACBL history — they wonthe Women’s Pairs fourconsecutive years: 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958.

Wagar and Rhodes share another record — oneof frustration. They were second in the Women’sTeams for seven consecutive years, 1952-1958.

Wagar’s impressive record spans three decadesand includes wins in women’s and opencompetition. Her open wins include the Reisinger in1941, the Open Pairs (the forerunner of the BlueRibbon Pairs) in 1947 and 1948 and the Spingold in1946 and 1948.

Wagar served on the ACBL Board of Directorsfrom 1960 to 1972 and was named ACBL HonoraryMember in 1979. She was non-playing captain ofthe U.S. World Women’s Teams in 1968 and 1972.

Until 1976 the Women’s Teams was a four-session event scored by Board-a-Match. It wascontested as a three-session championship until1972 and again in 1975.

The Women’s Teams was held at the FallNABC until 1963. In 1976 the event became aWomen’s KO with Swiss qualifying.

The historic Spingold Knockout Teams getsunderway today. Following is a look at the history of thisprestigious event.

History of the SpingoldThe Spingold Master Knockout Teams, first known

as the Challenge Knockout Teams, was contested for theAsbury Park Trophy in the early days.

The runner-up team in the regularly scheduledportion of the event had the right to challenge thewinners to a playoff. This right was never utilized.

In 1934, 1936 and 1937, the Masters Teams-of-Fourand the Asbury Park Trophy were separate events, providing two sets of winners.

In 1938 the event became the Spingold MasterKnockout Teams and a part of the Summer NABC.

At one time, the Spingold was a double eliminationevent, usually lasting nine or 10 sessions. It was scoredby International Match Points and was restricted toplayers with 100 or more masterpoints.

In 1965, the double elimination method was replacedby three qualifying sessions (subsequently reduced totwo), followed by single elimination knockout matches. The preliminary qualifying session were dropped in1970.

The Spingold Trophy, donated by Nathan B.Spingold in 1934; the Vanderbilt Trophy, awarded to thewinners of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams at the SpringNABC, and the Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated bythe Greater New York Bridge Association in memory ofCurt H. Reisinger and awarded to the winners of theReisinger Board-a-Match Teams, are ACBL’s mosthighly prized team trophies.

Spingold (1886-1958), a New York publicist, motionpicture executive and patron of the arts, was one of themost influential men in bridge administration from 1937to 1943.

Born in Chicago, he became a reporter on TheChicago Examiner, The Chicago Record Herald and TheChicago Tribune. Spingold’s interest in show businessbrought him to New York City in the Thirties.

In 1932 he joined Columbia Pictures in a publicrelations capacity. He was named to the board ofdirectors in 1940 and three years later was appointed vicepresident in charge of advertising, publicity anddevelopment. He became a vice president of thecompany in 1954.

Active in bridge from its earliest days, Spingold wasnamed ABL Honorary Member in 1936. He wasinstrumental in effecting a peaceful merger between theAmerican Bridge League and the United States BridgeAssociation in 1937 and became president of the newlyformed American Contract Bridge League the followingyear.

He served for many years on the League=s Board ofGovernors and Board of Directors. Spingold was alsopresident of the Cavendish Club in New York.

A look back at Chicago 1998

By: George KlemicWhen Chicago last hosted an NABC, I had

been playing tournaments only about two years. For the most part, I had results of varying levelsof mediocrity. However, there was one brightlight, in the final session of the Red Ribbon Pairs(now held during Spring NABCs). Aftermiraculously qualifying to the final with twobelow-average games, and a slightly above-average first session, my partner and I proceededto have a near 70% game and vault high into theoveralls. This huge set prompted me to record allof the hands from the session, as it’s something Ido from time to time. This board was one of manygood results.Dlr: South ♠ A Q 5 3Vul: E-W ♥ 10

♦ A J 8 4♣ 10 7 6 3

♠ 9 8 7 4 2 ♠ J 10♥ Q J 9 6 2 ♥ K 8 5 4 3♦ 9 5 ♦ 6♣ 8 ♣ Q J 9 4 2

The 3♣ bid was Alerted, but we didn’t ask. Iled the ♣8.

Years later, looking back at the hands andcomments written, I realized how much I haveadvanced. On this deal, I had added the wise-guycomment, “The double diverted us from our bestlead, hence South made 12 tricks instead of 12tricks after a heart lead.” Upon seeing this, Iimmediately saw that this statement was notaccurate! In practice, declarer made only 12 tricks, but 13 are there for the taking.

After a club lead, suppose South runs sixdiamonds, discarding clubs from dummy. Theexact discards East and West make will vary, butthe position should come to something like this:

♠ A Q 5 3♥ 10♦ —♣ —

♠ 9 8 7 4 ♠ J 10♥ Q J ♥ K 8♦ — ♦ —♣ — ♣ Q 9

♠ K 6♥ A 7♦ —♣ A 5

South at the table did not realize it, but thereis a double squeeze, of the more unusual varietyof being sequential, with each opponent beingsqueezed on a different trick. First, South cashesthe ♣A. In order to guard spades, West discards aheart. Now, declarer cashes three rounds ofspades. On the third spade, East must commit toeither a club or heart discard. Declarer, discardingbehind East, keeps the other suit and claims therest of the tricks.

On the more natural lead of a heart, declarercannot make 13 tricks. The trick is, without the♥A for transportation, declarer can squeeze onlyone of the opponents. Being able to see how theplay goes, the defense can always score a trick.

Chicago MercantileExchange Day

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME or,simply, “The Merc”) is the largest futuresexchange in the United States. The CME wasfounded in 1898 as the Chicago Butter and EggBoard. Originally, the exchange was a not-for-profit organization. The exchange demutualized inNov. 2000, and went public in Dec. 2002,becoming the first United States exchange to do soCME has four major product areas: short terminterest rates, stock market indexes, foreignexchange, and commodities. CME has the largestoptions and futures contracts open interest(number of contracts outstanding) of any futuresexchange in the world, which indicates a veryhigh liquidity. This is vital to the success of anystock or futures exchange.

The 2006 Chicago Summer NABC thanks theChicago Mercantile Exchange and Leo Melamedfor their gracious support. Many top bridgeplayers are traders.
