SPECIAL EVENTS Darn lebensohl!By Fred Hamilton

On the very first hand of the final match in theSenior Swiss Teams when we were leading by a slimVictory Point, I was faced with a terrible dilemma.

been a relay to 3̈, while 3̈ would be constructive.Pass was a possibility, but going minus 670 is a ter-rible way to start a match! After some thought I de-cided I could probably make a third trump with a heartruff or a promotion for my «7. So I passed!

The opening heart lead went to dummy, and a spadewas led to the 8 and jack. Back came another heart, anddeclarer led a low club, taken with the ace. Partnergave me my heart ruff and I returned a low diamondto the king. Back came a low club but declarer rosewith the king and held his losses to minus 200.

At the other table my teammates made 2« for a7-IMP pickup. Whew!!

Our t3am went on to win a blitz, and I won my11th North American title.

Neat playBy Barry Rigal

In the match between the teams captained byBridget Mavromichalis and Glickstein, AlfredSteinberg found a neat play to bring home a gamethat went down at the other table.

Plan the play on a low diamond lead.Alfred won the queen with the king and led the

If West had«Q-x and six clubs, together with what seemed to bea three-card diamond suit, there wouldn’t be much ofa chance to set up the heart suit for a diamond dis-card. So he finessed successfully and drew the lasttrump.

Now he advanced the ª8, and when West followedlow, he faced his second guess. Eventually he ran theª8, and when East took the king, he was home.

The magic 800By Barry Rigal

The Thursday Evening Pairs saw many North-Souths in serious trouble. With East-West cold for3NT, the question was whether the North-South es-cape on this deal would go for too much:

With the Spingold field down to 16 teams, noneof the decisions were getting any easier Thursday. There were a couple of really tough ones that espe-cially caught my eye, though. Here’s the first, a prettydefensive dilemma with a game swing at stake:

West (dummy)« A 4ª K Q J 9© K Q J 8¨ 9 5 3

You lead a top club against 4«, partner followswith the 4 (upside down carding), and declarer con-tributes the jack. On your second top club, partnerplays the 7, and declarer the queen. What’s your nextplay?

More on this topic later, but now let’s turn to thebidding problem Michael Polowan faced against BobHamman and Paul Soloway in another match duringthe same session. Polowan held« Q 10 4 ª K ©A Q 6 2 ¨K 8 7 5 4 and with no one vulnerable, heard Soloway open 3ªon his right. He elected to pass this for now, and was

probably congratulating himself on this decision whenhe saw Hamman bid 4NT: ace-asking! But partnerMark Feldman doubled 4NT, and Soloway passed (noaces); now what?

They had reached seriously uncharted waters bynow. What was the double of 4NT? Cards? Minors?Just designed to muddy the waters for the opponents?Polowan passed again, hoping for clarification,Hamman removed 4NT doubled to 5ª, and (twopasses later) Polowan was again in the hot seat.

Reasoning (correctly, as it turned out) thatHamman had a huge heart fit but few high cards,Polowan bid 5NT, and Mark Feldman bid 6¨, which(undoubled) became the final contract. The bad newswas that this failed when trumps were 3-1 (not a shockreally). The good news was that it was a great save -the opponents were cold for 5ª on their combined15 points! The whole hand was:

North (Hamman)« Aª A 9 7 5 3© J 8 7 5¨ J 10 2

West (Polowan) East (Feldman)« Q 10 4 « K J 8 7 3ª K ª --© A Q 6 2 © K 10 9 3¨ K 8 7 5 4 ¨ A 9 6 3

South (Soloway)« 9 6 5 2ª Q J 10 8 6 4 2© 4¨ Q

Now let’s get back to the defensive problem Istarted with. The whole hand was:

North (Becker)« 3 2ª A 10 8 6 3© 5 4 3¨ 7 4

West (Helgemo) East (Forrester)« A 4 « Q 10 9 8 6 5ª K Q J 9 ª 5© K Q J 8 © A 7¨ 9 5 3 ¨ Q J 8 2

South (Kamil)« K Jª 7 4 2© 10 9 6 2¨ A K 10 6

Looking at three sure losers in 4« outside thetrump problem, not to mention a probable club ruff,Tony Forrester made the beautiful, virtually no-costplay of jettisoning the queen and jack of clubs under-neath the ace and king. When Kamil started to think,Forrester figured he now had a 50% shot at the con-tract. Clearly Becker must have the missing ªA, sowould Kamil shift to heart or a diamond now that he’dbeen talked out of a club continuation? That, Forresterthought, depended on the exact size of North’s secondclub spot, which his partner would almost certainly tryto read as a suit preference signal.

Kamil certainly knew his decision was critical:Forrester was marked with one red ace, and if hepicked the wrong red suit to lead now, the losers inthe other suit would likely disappear on dummy’swinners. The pause lengthened, but finally Kamilplayed a heart, and the defense prevailed.

And of course, if he had returned a diamond,Forrester would have been well rewarded for a prettydeceptive play. Three rounds of diamonds would dis-pose of declarer’s heart loser, then a ruffing finessein hearts would establish two more winners. Cross-ing back to the «A, he could throw his two losingclubs on hearts, and concede the «K to chalk up hiscontract!

“Nice shift, partner,” said Becker, with just atouch of irony!

Take full marks only if you cashed the ¨10 (butcheck your X-ray glasses at the door next time youplay, please).

(1) Semi-forcing.

I decided not to describe my hand and to seewhether I could make the opponents pay a pricefor balancing.

West lead the ªK. I ruffed and led a trump tothe king which held. It seemed as though the «Qrated to be on my right, and I was better placedif it were, so I played a spade to the jack whichheld the trick. I cashed the «A, pitching a dia-mond from dummy and led the «K, ruffed andoverruffed. I now ruffed three hearts in my handand two more spades in dummy and cashed the©A for 11 tricks and 63 out of 64 matchpoints.

West had three chances to beat the contract, but none was obvious. Going up with the ¨A toplay another trump works, as does ruffing the «Kwith the trump ace and exiting with a trump. Westalso could have pitched two hearts on the fourthand fifth rounds of spades and been in a positionto overruff the last heart.

Why do I call 5̈ a bad bid and not just anoverbid? Because I knew I would likely havebought the hand in 4̈, and we’d have scored al-most as well for plus 150 as for plus 600, with muchless risk. In fact, plus 150 would have been worth59 matchpoints, and plus 130 would have beenworth 55.

to make any plans we might have work.”He sympathized with the ACBL in its efforts

to get more young people playing bridge. “Thereare so many activities available for American youth. The Junior Camp is a fine move, and other goodefforts have been made to interest Juniors. But theroad ahead is a long, long one. The situation isfrightening.” The ACBL sponsors a Junior Campevery other year.

“We’ve got to try harder,” said Panos, “and theaccent is on the ‘we’. What happens in Americaaffects the entire world, and it is up to the WBF tohelp out in any way we can. I personally am will-ing to do whatever I can to help.”

Panos explained why the World Junior Campis held only in Europe now. “To make it work fi-nancially we need a good crowd. We’ve had asmany as 156 pairs in the Junior Pairs, which pre-cedes the World Camp. That’s because so manyEuropean countries are pursuing Junior bridge sostrongly. If we tried this in the United States, wecouldn’t handle the financing. You have only 12teams in the Junior Trials. We’d need a lot moreyoungsters from other parts of the world to make aWorld Camp with Junior Pairs pay off. And theyoungsters from abroad wouldn’t have the fundsto get here.”

My partner, Allan Falk, made the normal lead ofthe ©6.

Declarer played the king from dummy, so I wonthe ace and returned the jack. Declarer ducked andAllan followed with the 2. I continued the 9 so thatAllan would know I originally had four, and declarerwon perforce, Allan following with the 8. Since welead low from three small and second highest fromfour small I should know what’s going on in the suitat trick two. The © 8 at trick three, therefore, shouldbe suit preference for hearts.

Declarer played the «K to trick four and Allanwon the ace while I attempted to give suit preferencewith the 8. I don’t know whether Allan decipheredmy «8 or not, but he figured out what was going on.Many players would play a diamond to partner, count-ing on him to have read the diamond signal at trickthree. Allan realized that it would be hard for me tolead away from my presumed ªK so he cashed theªA before leading a diamond to my 10 --- how con-siderate!

Allan’s play made it easy for me to cash the ªKand hold declarer to seven tricks, for 38 matchpointson a 51 top. Letting declarer make an overtrick wouldhave put us under average for the board.

New Life Masters Three with one blowThree members of the same team made Life

Master together on Wednesday. RUTH R.WAMESTER of Middletown CT, SHARONLARSON of Charlotte CT and JOE PROULX ofWallingford CT made the grade in Bracket 3 of theBracketed Knockouts.

What about the fourth member of the team?Charles Freeman of St. Louis was already a LifeMaster. “We grabbed him about five minutes beforegame time so that we could have a team,” said Ruth.“And he did a great job of bringing us in.”

HAL JEDELSON dropped by to tell us that headvanced to Bronze Life Master when he won a sec-tion top in Flight B of the Stratified Open Pairs.

JODY WADHWA of Northbrook IL became LifeMaster by placing fourth overall in the Senior Strati-fied Pairs, partnered by Irwin Bender of Glencoe IL.

Congratulations to YASUKO BORNSTEIN ofNew York NY who became an LM playing withpartner Sallie Krass and teammates Nancy Turnerand Jo Johnson in the Bracketed Knockouts onThursday.

Congratulations to SUSAN TAUBVANDEWATER of Bayside NY who became a LifeMaster in the Senior Open Pairs playing with KentVandewater.

Walt Shafer led his singleton spade, taken in handby the king. Grabel led the ©9, and Shafer ducked, though in retrospect he would have done better towin his ace and shoot back a diamond. The queenwon the diamond in dummy, and Grabel called foranother diamond, the king losing to the ace.

As early as this East was endplayed. He got outwith a club, ducked to the queen. Grabel crossed tothe ̈ A and ruffed a club. Then he led a spade offdummy, and of course it would have done Tom Foxno good whatsoever to ruff -- he'd be ruffing a loser. So he discarded a diamond as the ace won. Grabelruffed a club, then delivered the tour de force -- hethrust West in with a spade. Fox was able to cash twospades, but then he was forced to break the trumpsuit for Grabel, and as a result Grabel was able toscore up 10 tricks.

That was worth 10 IMPS because Grabel's team-mates -- John Onstott and Chris Compton -- defeated4« one trick at the other table.

“BULL GOES 3-1, ZIA LOSES, BANNEDFROM EATING MEAT”

The new Probationary Swami “Bull” had an un-believable day, going 3-1 in the quarterfinals of theSpingold. The only match which got away wasSchwartz v. Wolfson with Wolfson losing a halftimelead to the boys from I-95. As homage to the Bull,Oprah Winfrey has forced Zia not to eat beef throughthe end of the Orlando Reisinger.

This year’s Spingold has the usual suspects inthe semifinals -- Nickell, Schwartz, Baze, plus theexcitement of the Cinderalla Onstott. Bull has not alot to say, trying to save his positive energy forCinderalla. Without further ado, the Bull comes infrom grazing at the hotel buffet to pick the picks:

#1 Baze v. #4 Schwartz

The Bull’s word processor went south lastnight as the Virgin Baze was listed as playing withWhitworth, instead of Whitman. Apologies to all, anda strong letter to Bill Gates about malfunctioning

Vanderbilt final on vugraphconversions from WordPerfect to Word turningWhitman into Whitworth. Last year’s Spingoldchamps, Zmudzinki-Balicki, Lesnieski-Szymanowski(all those consonants will undoubtably break the wordprocessor again) play Horse-Canyon (Lair-Schwartz),and Frisco Smith, plus the East Coast freeway, I-95,Levin-Weinstein. What to think, who will come acrossthe tape? Watch the first quarter score. If Baze staysclose early, they win late. The defenders win thedownhill on all fourSki’s, Whitman by a few -- Bazeby 4.

# 2 Nickell v. # 3 Onstott

Everyone sees Cinderalla turning into a pump-kin, Nickell has the goods, Meck-Well bid-em-up,Hamman and Soloway practice, practice, practice.Compton steals Soloway’s notes at the quarter, andone big second quarter accident keeps the match close. In the surprise of the century, Onstott hires the Zenmaster, Phil Mulson, as coach, and a retired MichaelJordan joins the Onstott squad at half-time. Simplyput, the Bull has to pick — whom he has to pick.Grabel - Wittes make a grand on a repeating triple onthe ultimate board to tie the match. Onstott andHamman armwrestle for the title and the New Or-leans O grabs another IMP. The match ends beforemidnight and Cinderalla Onstott nips the BermudaBowl representatives -- Onstott by 1.

MUNSON made a steady comeback, however, cutting the lead to 21 IMPs at the half and overtakingWEI-SENDER at the end of the third quarter to leadby a narrow 2 IMPs.

The MUNSON squad iced the win by taking thelast set 41-24.

This is Kitty Munson’s sixth NABC win. She andteammate Gwozdzinsky, for whom this is the fifthNABC title, also have a world championship title totheir credit.

For Carol Simon, the Wagar is her first NABC vic-tory. Linda Lewis has a previous win in the Mixed Teams, but this is her first win in an NABC women’s event.

This is Karen Barrett’s first win in a women’sknockout event, having previously won the Women’sSwiss Teams.

Susan Wexler also has another NABC title. It isthe second time she has played in the Wagar andnoted, “The first time I played in this event I wassecond, and the second time I played in it I was first.”

The final match lasted until 2 a.m. A beamingMunson emerged from the closed room to begin thefinal score comparison, knowing that she and partnerCarol Simon had had a great set.

“I knew we had done it,” she told her teammatesas they celebrated the win.

Poor optionsThe director attempted to determine if an insuf-

ficient bid was a mechanical error by asking, “Didyou pull the wrong card from the box, or did you losetrack of the auction?”

“Wait just a minute,” the player objected. “You aremaking me admit that either I’m clumsy or I’m stupid!”

Canadiancontroversy

In the recent Canadian National Teams Champi-onships in Ottawa, the quarterfinal match betweenteams captained by Cameron Doner and MikeHargreaves was decided in committee after an ap-peal involving the following deal (Doner lost by 2IMPs as a result of the committee’s ruling).

In view of the controversy surrounding the deci-sion, Doug Heron (chairman of the appeals commit-tee and president of the Canadian Bridge Federation)sought to disseminate the facts of the case and thecommittee’s reasoning. Heron’s account follows. Theplayers were Gord McOrmond-Bryan Maksymetz(Hargreaves) and Gerry McCully-Felipe Hernandez(Doner).

(1) A hesitation of approximately two minutes, ac-knowledged by all players. The director was calledto the table at that point.

Result: 7̈ made seven --- plus 2140 for North-South (at the other table, North-South stopped in 6¨).

Director’s ruling: table result stands. The facts: East-West appealed, claiming the long

hesitation strongly implied that a bid other than 5¨was being considered. Even though the auction wasbeing carried out behind screens, it appeared to beobvious to all that the hesitation was by North, notby his screenmate (East).

East-West also claimed that North’s slow 5¨made it much more likely that bidding on would bemore successful than passing. North argued that hewas considering whether 4̈ was a request for a keycard response, or for a cuebid. He eventually madethe response which could be neither. Unfortunately,it took a considerable amount of time to reach thisdecision. North argued that considerable time hadbeen taken by the opponents in other auctions (im-plying the delay in returning the bidding tray couldwell have been caused by East).

What follows is the committee’s reasoning anddecision.

It was easy to conclude that there had been a hesi-tation. It was also evident that North-South had noagreements in this situation. We nonetheless had valu-able information from some of the things said bySouth during the hearing. Our reasoning was basedlargely on South’s comments.

First, with respect to the 5© bid: had North de-cided to bid 4NT over 4̈, there would have been astrong argument to force South to pass that call.

The 5̈ bid, showing a fit, was at least somewhatencouraging. Note that while North-South did nothave agreements here, North did indicate that a cuebidover 4̈ would have promised first-round control (hesaid he did not want to bid 4ª as a response to Gerbersince that would have shown the ªA). South like-wise indicated that he would have expected a 4« bidto have shown the «A.

Since South could still demonstrate that 6¨ wasa possible contract (North might have the «K) andthat 5NT would not be in jeopardy (if North does nothave a spade control then he must have either bothred kings or one red king-queen, either of which givesthem 11 tricks in notrump) the committee was in fa-

Barbara Simpson and Virginia Wynne

They met onlineThe staff of the Orlando NABC encourages all

Intermediate/Novice players to make plans to attendthis great event Nov. 19-29. Get your partners nowfor the National 99ers Pairs.

The North American Championships are a greatplace to meet friends, have fun and play bridge.

Consider the story of Barbara Simpson and VirginiaWynne who played here in Chicago. Simpson, ofGodfrey IL, and Wynne, of Nixon TX, met on OKbridgeabout a year ago. The two had never met face-to-facebefore, but agreed to meet here in Chicago.

“My husband thought I was crazy, meeting some-one whom I had never even seen before,” said Wynne.“But it’s amazing how much you can tell about a per-son just chatting with them online.”

Simpson said, “I picked up Virginia at the airportand we immediately came back to the hotel to play inthe tournament.”

The pair’s first outing was not exactly successful.“We played in a 0-5 Novice game and finished

dead last,” said both, laughing.“But we played the next day in the 0-199 Strati-

fied Pairs and we won the C strata, and we were sec-ond in A,” said Simpson.

Wynne is a high school teacher near San Antoniowhose OKbridge handle is “Gin”. Simpson is a medi-cal technologist, who goes by “JSSBAS”.

The partnership has plans to continue playing intournaments offline.

“Barbara is coming to play in a regional next sum-mer in San Antonio,” said Wynne.

Playing With Paulby Henry Bethe

My son Paul first appeared at the bridge tableduring the Reno NABC in 1989 at age 11. In themeantime he has turned 20 and lately has be-come interested in playing. Last weekend he wonhis first regional title, one of the brackets of theFriday-Saturday Bracketed KO.

Paul’s bridge is stil l in relatively earlystages of development. His bidding is sophisti-cated but his ability to visualize play and de-fensive positions has some ways to go. Thissometimes leads to difficult situations for theopponents to cope with as evidenced by this dealfrom the Continuous Pairs.

West led the ©J to Paul’s ace -- he hasn’t yetlearned that the right card to win with is thequeen. He started spades, carefully leading the5 to block the suit, and looked pleased when thesuit broke 2-2. On the next two spades Eastpitched the ª8-2 and West the ª4 and ̈ 8. Paulnow led the ̈ 2 which was ducked and the 10won in dummy. Note how his failure to unblockthe spades allowed him to lure the opponentsinto ducking the ̈ K in the hopes that he wouldnot be able to reach the fifth one. He now cashedthe last spade, and he and East pitched clubs. He cashed the remaining minor suit winners, andwhen he led the ªQ to trick 11, East was leftwith the ªAK3 and had to concede an 11th trick.+460 was pretty good on this board -- better thanyou or I could have done.

GIB wins World ComputerBridge Challenge

University of Oregon professor Matt Ginsberg’sGIB won the final of the Baron Barclay/OKbridgeWorld Computer Bridge Challenge by defeating QPlus Bridge, from Munich Germany’s JohannesLeber, by a score of 181-118.

The 64-board final ended a week of bridge com-petition and exhibition play.

then ran five rounds of diamonds. What would youpitch as West?

Some human players, as well as Q Plus at theother table, would pitch two clubs, a spade and a heart. This allows declarer to drive out the ª K safely, sincethe defense can then cash only three club tricks.

GIB correctly came down to« K ª K 5 © --- ¨ 10 9 4 3 ,which beats the contract.

Canadian controversycontinued from page 6

vor of allowing the 5© bid. While it is true that the hesitation suggests that

bidding on over 5̈ will be more successful than pass-ing, the fact that North-South might have a slam andcannot get too high means that bidding on is not sug-gested by the hesitation, but rather by the cards held.

Note that one consequence of South’s argumentis that if North had bid 5NT over 5©, that should havedenied any spade control.

With respect to the 6ª bid, some may argue thatthe 5« bid must promise the «A because North wouldhave bid 6̈ instead with the «K. As a matter of theorythat is debatable, but it is irrelevant here, where North-South clearly had no such agreements. Here again, acomment by South was crucial. When asked why hebid 6ª, he said it was because 5« promised a spadecontrol, and he bid 6ª “in case it was the ace”. SoSouth did not believe that North’s bidding alone hadpromised the «A.

Now the reasoning was: North’s bidding hasstrongly suggested that he does not hold the «A (andif he does, then his hand is somehow unsuitable forslam --- why else would he not cuebid immediatelywhile holding trump support?). The hesitation over4¨ suggests he was considering some other call that,in the light of subsequent bidding, was almost surely4« (the other option, 4NT, is far less likely with ahand now known to hold trump support). For thispartnership, 4« would surely have shown the «A (seeNorth’s comment above). Therefore the bidding sug-gests that North does not have the «A, while the hesi-

tation suggests that North does.South certainly has logical alternatives to the 6ª

call, namely 6̈ and 6NT, and the hesitation certainlysuggests 6ª over the other calls. In fact, without astrong likelihood that North has the «A --- a likeli-hood that in the committee’s judgment was demon-strably suggested by the earlier hesitation --- 6ª couldbe a very bad bid, since West would then be quitelikely to hold both the «A and the ªK, and in thatcase bidding 6ª commits North-South to 6NT, whileguaranteeing that it goes down by allowing West todouble for the lead.

Thus, in the committee’s view, it would be wrongto allow the 6ª call, since it is demonstrably sug-gested over the logical alternatives by the hesitation.

The decision between 6NT and 6¨ remained. From South’s point of view, 6̈ is in some danger ofa spade ruff, while 6NT, played by North, is in somedanger of a red-suit lead setting up a king in West’shand while the «A is outstanding. For instance, giveNorth

«K Q x ªQ x x ©K Q x ¨J x x x,or any other hand missing the «A and ªK, and notcontaining the ©K Q J x.

In accordance with the Laws, when the offend-ing side has a choice of actions, of which any couldeasily be right, they are assumed to obtain the leastfavorable result which is at all possible. In this case, that is a bid of 6̈ .

As another point of interest, when on the actualauction the decisive moment arrived, the North-Southpair judged to bid 7̈ and not 7NT.

Thus the committee felt there was no reason toassume that North-South would choose notrump asopposed to clubs at the six level.

As a final point, which was not discussed by theplayers at committee, the question of allowing a con-tinuation over a theoretical call of 6̈ was exploredby the committee. It was felt that had this beenbroached, it should be disallowed. The reasoning wasthat North, who was willing to play what he knewcould be a likely slam in 5̈ (the bid was, after all,non-forcing, and he could instead have jumped to 6¨at that point) out of fear of a greater disaster shouldthey have a misunderstanding, was clearly not aboutto bid a speculative 6NT or 7̈ if his partner signedoff in 6¨.

Decision: North-South 6̈, making seven. Plus1390.

Committee members:Doug Heron (chairman), Doug Fraser and Don

Kersey.

Foul playTournament Director Ron Geagley, of Washing-

ton D.C., was directing four sections of a pair gameon Tuesday when he noticed something unusual onone of the boards. In three of the four sections, theresults were almost all plus 450 for East-West. In theother section, the scores were plus 480 for East-West.

This is usually the indication of a fouled boardand after a quick investigation, Geagley discoveredthe problem. The board had been improperly madebecause the ̈9 and ̈ 10 had been switched, whichaccounted for the score difference.

Players are cautioned to exercise care when du-plicating boards.
