Page 5 CLARION Winter Issue 2020 Continued from page 1 A Club House. We also have anonymity How do you get in and become a member. Bottom Line. We have to feed the roots of the organization by getting to know one another. So, I am asking all members to assemble in the council at 10am to Noon on the last Saturday of January. We will have a list of things that need to be done. From etc. Stuffing Envelopes. To helping with cleaning items. It will be a good way to know your fellow Knights. Looking forward to seeing you!!!! Retired Knights!!!! I am looking to set up a Coffee pot and welcome a Retire Knights Association during the day in the Council. If you’re interested…Please contact Grand Knight Mike Murtha-516-639-8606 Medical Equipment: If you have any medical Equipment that you no longer need, Please call Brother Mike Murtha-516-639-8606. Corpus Christi Council is looking to do a First Degree at our Social Meeting in February. God Bless You and God Bless America Grand Knight, Michael T. Murtha Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism

Chaplain’s W.I. Message: As we start this year, I ask you to join me in doing your most financially for our council. And the reason is quite simple: we are nearly broke! Yes, I said broke. As we came to the end of 2019, it was clear from reports made at our regular meetings that our accounts were almost depleted. As a result, we have suspended all charitable giving and put off indefinitely some discretionary spending. I suggested to our Grand Knight and he accepted my proposal to appeal to the membership in early 2020 for voluntary donations to keep our council going. Thus, you are going to receive a letter from the Chaplain and a stamped, return envelope to subsidize our council. I ask you to support this appeal with a check in the most generous way you can. We really need your help! You may be wondering how we have arrived at this point. Well, you are probably aware that we accept rentals (engagement parties, First Holy Communion parties and the like) at Corpus Christi Council. Rentals have always helped us to pay our bills and keep our doors open for our own fraternal activities.

But rentals have fallen off and the income we used to receive is no longer there. However, that’s not the only reason. Another reason is that fewer and fewer of our own members support our fraternal activities anymore. By supporting our fraternal activities, I mean showing up for things like the Saint Patrick Day Dance, the Knight of the Year Communion Breakfast, the Super Bowl Party and other events. In 1923, some pioneering Catholic men established our council. As you can see by the date, we are close to marking our council’s centennial anniversary in our community. I want to be present when we reach that milestone, and I want that milestone to be reached in our own building. I can think of no better way to thank our predecessors for their vision and show our own pride in being Knights of Columbus than to step up now and assist Corpus Christi Council in the hour of its need. I am thankful for your consideration of my request. As we go forward, please be assured of my support for the welfare of our council. May we all rise to the challenge before us and insure a longer, more vital presence of the Knights of Columbus in our community. In Christ, Msgr. Bob Batule Council Chaplain The Right Corner: The practice of making New Year’s resolutions goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is just something about the start of a new year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. In reality, there is no difference between December 31 and January1. Nothing mystical occurs at midnight on December 31. The Bible does not speak for or against the concept of New Year’s resolutions. However, if a Brother Knight or a Columbiette determines to make a New Year’s resolution, what kind of resolution should he or she make? Common New Year’s resolutions are commitments to quit smoking, to stop drinking, to manage money more wisely, and to spend more time with family. By far, the most common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, in conjunction with exercising more and eating more healthily. These are all good goals to set. However, 1Timothy 4:8 instructs us to keep exercise in perspective: Continued on page 6

Page 6 CLARION Winter Issue 2020 Continued from page 5 “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” The vast majority of New Year’s resolutions, even among Christians, are in relation to physical things. This should not be. Many Catholics make New Year’s resolutions to pray more, to read the Bible every day, and to attend church more regularly. These are fantastic goals. However, these New Year’s resolutions fail just as often as the non-spiritual resolutions, because there is no power in a New Year’s resolution. Resolving to start or stop doing a certain activity has no value unless you have the proper motivation for stopping or starting that activity. For example, why do you want to read the Bible every day? Is it to honor God and grow spiritually, or is it because you have just heard that it is a good thing to do? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to honor God with your body, or is it for vanity, to honor yourself? Phillipians 4:13 tells us, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” John 15:5 declares, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” If God is the center of your New Year’s resolution, it has chance for success, depending on your commitment to it. If it is God’s will for something to be fulfilled, He will enable you to fulfill it. If a resolution is not God-honoring and/or is not in agreement with God’s Word, we will not receive God’s help in fulfilling the resolution. So, what sort of New Year’s resolution should a Brother Knight or a Columbiette make? Take a look at some of mine suggestions: (1) pray to the Lord for wisdom regarding what resolutions, if any, you would make; (2) pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; (3) rely on God’s strength to help you; (4) find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; (5) don’t become discouraged with occasional failures; instead, allow them to motivate you further; (6) don’t become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.” Ken Lyons, Editor AROUND THE COUNCIL: Christmas Poinsettia’s Report:

Once again PGK, DD, Jim Corrigan, PGK, John Mallon, Jude Ohrtman, Bill Gyves and Dan Albano deserve a round of applause for delivering poinsettia’s to the widows of our Council. Many of the widows they visited were extremely happy that we took time to remember them throughout the Christmas season. Ken Lyons, Editor

Children’s Christmas Party Report: It’s all about the kids. Following a tradition set forth many years ago by the Council, on Sunday, December 8th, 2019 over 40 kids were paid a visit by Santa bearing presents. Our extra presents were donated to the Marine Corps, Toys for Tots. The job of planning the Council’s Children’s Christmas party can often seem something of an unwelcome and scary prospect. But, there’s a power in a group of people who work together toward a shared goal. A properly managed team, boost strengths and brings out the best in each member. Mike Kiesel (Santa) with special help from Marian Redmond, Valerie Passarella, Megan Romito, Stu Kaplan, Ellen Donovan, Kevin Keenan with an honorable mention to Bobby Redmond and Chairman Ken Lyons, PGK face the extra challenges of budgeting and planning for an unknown number of children in attendance, attracting volunteers, buying and wrapping presents, supplying food and drinks, providing entertainment, takes special energy and commitment. The Knights of Columbus, like many organizations, depend upon volunteers who have day jobs, family commitments, and other hobbies, unless members are recognized for their achievements, it’s easy for them to lose interest. Sometimes, I forget the people who made this party so successful in so many ways. Sometimes, I forget to tell them how much I really appreciated their help in running the Children’s Christmas Party. Today is just another day, nothing special going on, so thank you, all of you, just being there for the children. Ken Lyons, Children’s Christmas Party Chairman Member’s Christmas Party Report: On December 21st, our Annual Member’s Christmas Party was held in the Columbian Lounge, with over 50 people in attendance. Continued on page 7

Page 7 CLARION Winter Issue 2020Continued from page 6 Lou Librandi brought an evening of enjoyment to many of our members and their friends. Given a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the Christmas rush, Brother Knights and their wives, Columbiettes, and friends came together for a festive evening. Arditos catered the food for the party. Light array of Christmas music filled the air as everyone seem in a festive mood sharing stories. Once again they set tone for the year by creating another successful Christmas Member’s Party. We appreciated their unfailing attention to detail. If someone asked me to describe the ambience of the party in one word, I would say it was vivacious. Thank you Lou and Nancy for all your hard work and dedication. Ken Lyons, Editor Pro-Life Mass: On Sunday, Jan. 20, 2020 at 10:15 a.m. Cardinal Timothy Dolan will celebrate the Respect for Life Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Pro-Life Mass educates and advocates for all life from the unborn to the aged. Fifty billion babies aborted is enough for a hundred thousand lifetimes. Please contact the Grand Knight @ (516) 236-1073 if you are interested in attending. “It seems to me as clear as daylight that abortion would be a crime”. Mahatma Gandhi

Pro-Life March: The 47th annual March for Life will take place Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 in Washington, D.C., and tens of thousands of pro-life marchers from New York and around the country are planning to make the trip to the nation’s capital to call for protection under the law for human life at all stages. The march marks the 47th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which made abortion legal throughout the United States. It also is a sign of the strength of the pro-life movement in the United States, and of the growing opposition to abortion and other attacks on life, including euthanasia. “And if we can accept that a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?” Saint Mother Teresa Ken Lyons, Editor

Super Bowl Party: When it comes down to breathtaking, nail-biting excitement, it's tough to top the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl draws millions of viewers from around the world. Many of them don’t tune in to watch the game. They watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. This year’s Super Bowl LIV will be played on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. And the hype and hoopla for the 54th Super Bowl has begun. Our GIANTS and JETS are still deciding where they will be watching the game this year. Where will you be watching the Super Bowl this year? Why not watch the game at the Council with your friends? The Council’s Super Bowl Party is $40 per person and includes a hot and cold buffet, open bar, one hour before game starts to one hour after game is over. Reservations are requested. So if you watch the Super Bowl for commercials, the game itself or root for the numbers you have in various football pools, you cannot beat the Super Bowl Party at the Council. For additional details please contact Danny McWeeney @ 516 835--0449 or Bobby Redmond @ 516 741-8930 or call the council @ 516 746-8643. DD Jim Corrigan Insurance Corner: It’s that well known time of year when we think about making or actually make resolutions. Have you made any yet? Maybe the realistic question is, “Have you already broken some of them yet?” Here are 10 popular New Year’s resolutions from the internet along with some of my own: 1. Get in shape; for some of us this means to lose some weight, exercise more and staying fit; to stop smoking or eat healthier foods.

2. Stop procrastinating; I don’t know about you, but I’m going to put this off for yet another year! 3. Improve my prayer life; there’s an app for that! I’ve been using the Laudate app. The Laudate app claims it is the most downloaded Catholic app. It has an immense library of prayers, devotions, daily readings, podcasts and Vatican documents. 4. Improve a skill or develop a new hobby; maybe you want to lower your golf handicap or learn to bowl. I’ve always wanted to (fill in the blank). 5. Be more thankful; God has blessed me in so many ways and sometimes I forget to thank Him for all of those things…usually because I’m too busy asking for something else. 6. Spend more time with the people that matter most; sometimes I get so busy working, keeping the house up or going to some meeting, I forget the ones I do these things for. I’ve got to set aside more time to just be with them. 7. Reduce stress; in this sometimes hectic and seemingly crazy world, it’s easy to get swallowed up in the latest tragedy and worry all the time. Cutting out those sources of stress or learning how to deal with them more effectively means a more settled life. 8. Read more; with so much on the internet, TV and radio it’s easy for me to get lost in those. Reading for pleasure has become something of a lost art. Think about the last book you read; I just read (fill in the blank) and it was very enjoyable. 9. Spend wisely; it’s so easy to spend money on things we really don’t need, buy on a whim or because we’re keeping up with the Jones. I just bought a (fill in the blank) and now after reflection, I’m thinking, “Do I really need that?” 10. Review your financial health; whatever your current situation, it’s always a good idea to take stock on a yearly basis. Now this last resolution is something I can help you keep: Meet with me this year to update your Family Service Record and see where you stand. Your financial health is critical to your family’s future security. As your Field Agent, I have so much more responsibility than a simple financial advisor or stock broker. We’ll take a look at your dreams, goals and aspirations and make sure you’re on track to make them become a reality. I’ll be around after the meeting if you’d like to talk. [email protected] Where did 2019 go? The older I get, time just flies by. I feel like it was summer yesterday and I wouldn’t mind some warmer, golfing weather right now. Continued on page 11

Page 11 CLARION Winter Issue 2020Continued from page 10 I hope you and your family had a great 2019. Now is the time to start planning for 2020 before it too flies by. Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I’m sure you have heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to sit with you. Let’s schedule time to meet to perform an “insurance check-up” to evaluate any gaps in your family’s life insurance protection. Now is the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Remember that we don’t plan to fail, but sometimes we do fail to plan. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Why should you care about protecting your family with life insurance? The reason is simple and it’s the same as Father McGivney’s vision and mission for almost 138 years, you are providing financial protection for Catholic families, your family. You may ask, at what cost? The financial check-up is free to Knights and their families? When was the last time you received something for free that could provide value to you and your family for generations? Let’s schedule a conversation. Vivat Jesus! Will Havron, CLTC 516.578.6452 Knights of Columbus Fraternal Benefits Representative [email protected] Seminarians News: The sex scandals that rocked the Catholic Church in Boston and other cities seem worlds away. Today seminarians insist the scandals have tested — but not shaken — their faith and, in fact, they see themselves as vanguards of reform. More than ever, it's a call to them, to their future and the future of the Church to recognize that they have to be solid, holy priests. Many seminarians — most in

their 20s — reject any link between celibacy and sexual misconduct. It's a real disservice to the church, to try to associate celibates with men who have deviant sexual paths or who have committed any act of impropriety. Some seminarians compared their promise of celibacy to the vows of marriage. Is it possible for a man and woman to promise to be together the rest of their life? Almost impossible without the grace of God. There are problems, challenges, and struggles. But that is what the aim is. For the rest of a seminarian life, that's what they're promising. The seminarians suggested that their vocation is being unfairly tarnished by the actions of a tiny minority in the priesthood by a bias media. While their hearts go out to the victims, this isn't the end of the story for the church. Noting that Easter is approaching, there is a need to focus on the hope of the resurrection, and hope of virtue over sin and good over evil. Ken Lyons, Editor Vocations: It's inaccurate to interpret the shrinking number of priests and a decrease in the number of men and women joining religious communities as a general decline in the Catholic Church Instead, rising numbers of deacons and lay ecclesial ministers point to a Catholic Church that is vibrant, though perhaps one that will be led in a different way in the future. The church is being transformed as the social context of the laity is being transformed. The strength and vitality of the Catholic Church is in its laity. It should be noted that among mainstream churches in the United States the Catholic Church is the only one to see a decrease in clergy. But in other Catholic vocations the numbers have gone up steadily, with more deacons and lay ministers. The church is changing to new circumstances. Vocations to the priesthood in other First World countries are declining in the same way as in the U.S., and in Third World countries vocations are thriving. There are many factors may contribute to the decline in traditional religious vocations. For Catholics who came of age 40 or 50 years ago, faith is closely associated with the church -- love and support of the church itself. Today's youths are more interested in an individual approach to faith and are less attached to church. Continued on page 12

Page 12 CLARION Winter Issue 2020Continued from page 11 The laity today are likely to see priests as different from them but not any better, noting that contributing to this was a movement after the Second Vatican Council to see priests as servant-leaders. The laity doesn't put priests on a pedestal the way they used to. Yet, priests and religious make the same sacrifices, such as celibacy and chastity that they always did. There are signs of growth in the Church, thanks to the grace of God; but the hard fact remains that the Church of just a few decades ago, staffed by an army of nuns and religious brothers, is now a thing of the past. As for the rest of us, wondering what comes next, how the Church can do without what once seemed essential, I am not sure we get it either, at least not yet. Ken Lyons, Editor Fr. Michael J. McGivney: Path to Sainthood: To his supporters, the Rev. Michael J. McGivney is nothing less than a saint. To get the Vatican to see it that way, now they have to prove it. To say it's an awesome task is an understatement. It's an incredible and exciting time for Catholics and all people here. Father McGivney was an amazing man. He lived what he preached, which was for selfless service to others. Father McGivney was also dedicated to providing food, clothing and shelter to widows and orphans, as well as to ministering to New Haven prisoners. He gained public attention in the early 1880's for conducting Mass in jail for a man convicted of killing an Ansonia police officer. A newspaper clipping from the time quotes the convicted man, James Smith, as saying, ''Father, your saintly administration has enabled me to meet death without a tremor.'' The quest to canonize Father McGivney began nearly a century after his death from pneumonia and tuberculosis. It is an effort being led by the 23,000-member Father McGivney Guild, an offshoot of the Knights of Columbus. As part of their mission, guild members regularly pray to Father McGivney, distribute prayer cards that have been touched to a relic of the priest, and share stories about his life. One miracle performed after his death is needed for beatification, which is the formal recognition of what are called a candidate's ''heroic virtues.'' A second miracle, performed after his death, is needed for sainthood.

No miracles were needed for St. John the XXIII or Pope Paul the VI. But Fr. McGivney was just a simple priest helping widows and orphans, a simple priest following in Jesus footsteps. Ken Lyons, Editor Fourth Degree Corner: The Fourth Degree is often known as ‘The Patriotic Degree’. The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title with its regalia of berets and swords but should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side. Any Third Degree Knight interested in becoming a Fourth Degree Knight should contact the FS, SK, Nick Pennacchio, PGK or the GK, SK, Mike Murtha Letter to the Editor: Dear Knights: Thank you so much for the lovely Poinsettia which reminds me of many friends in the Knights of Columbus. Ron loved being a part of the Knights. Your prayers and good wishes are particularly appreciated. My best wishes to all the Knights for a Blessed and Joyous Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year. Sincerely, Janet Baker Editor’s Editorial: After the presents have been opened, the carols have been sung, and the festivities of Christmas day are over, most of us tuck our Christmas spirit—you know, that cheerful, nice-to-everyone-cause-it's-Christmas vibe—away until next year. With hope that maybe we can embody the “Christmas Spirit” every day and not just during the holidays. In these uncertain times coming together to help one another, spreading cheer and happiness, and to give the gift of giving is something that can unite us as Americans. So together let’s start spreading the Christmas Spirit early this year. Whether you can volunteer your time, help a person in need, or to just have a happy loving heart now and every day. By embodying what we should be doing throughout the entire year. I think it was best said by Richelle E. Goodrich, “The Christmas spirit will elude you, ‘til a selfless love consumes you, and the joy of giving moves you.”
