Page 2: Volume 7, Issue 6 UCY/UCYA Winnipeg May 2009 From The ... · Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew ... the

Why Did Jesus Fold the Napkin? Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I never noticed this.... The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple out ran Peter and got there first. He stopped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side.

Was that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes! In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand

a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition. When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the

way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished. Now if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table. The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the

Page 2

What’s Up with Gpmejoh? wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done'. But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because.......... The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!' He is Coming Back!!

Workshops What's Wrong with Rights? Bishop Bryan Bayda, CSsR

We will briefly explore what "rights" are in a Christian context and other ways they are misunderstood in day-to-day life. The wolf of "Relativism" is sometimes disguised in sheep's clothing known as "Rights".

When East Meets West Amanda Maternicki

Pardon? Is it true, you married outside the Ukrainian Catholic Church and survived to tell the tale?? In this workshop we will discuss, reflect, laugh and sigh as we strive to shed some light on the struggle to live the two lungs of the Catholic Church when West meets East in marriage.

Reconciliation Service

Fr. Stephen Wojcichowsky

During the service, Fr. Stephen will reflect on the Holy Mystery of Repentance. “Why do I need to confess my sins to a priest?” This and other questions about confession will be addressed to offer participants a deeper understanding of the meaning and effectiveness of this sacrament of healing.

Schedule

Weekend Highlights include: Thursday, August 13 ~ Arrival ~ Welcome BBQ & Bonfire ~ Opening Liturgy Friday, August 14 ~ Keynote ~ Breakout Sessions ~ Vespers ~ “Taste of the Eparchies” Saturday, August 15 ~ Keynote ~ Breakout Sessions ~ Reconciliation Service ~ Zabava Sunday, August 16 ~ Divine Liturgy ~ Final words ~ Farewells August 17-19 Optional tours of Niagara Falls and Toronto with accommodation at Mount Mary are being arranged for those wishing to stay in the area. Departure on Wednesday. The Unity 2009 logo brings together theme, location and our Ukrainian Canadian heritage. The three blue lines rep-resent the Holy Trinity and the water of baptism, while echoing the shape of Niagara Falls. The black figure (in the form of a cross) standing on a yellow line is a person living on the edge. The yellow line represents the Niagara Es-carpment (the edge) and the light of the Holy Spirit that inspires us to live on the edge in faith, hope and love. While the blue and yellow are taken from the Ukrainian flag, the maple leaf is from the Canadian. The logo was designed by Aleksandra Haljkevic, a member of the parish of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church in St. Catharines, ON.

Note 2: Taking a Chance on Love

When an advice col-umnist finds that dis-pensing words of wisdom and accept-ing them are two very different things in "The Note II: Taking a Chance on Love," a Hallmark Channel

Original Movie, in which Francis' advice col-umnist thinks about heading for a wedding and tries to bond with her long-lost daughter, all the while following the emotional mission a brand-new missive sends her on. This time, Peyton deals with a note from one of her loyal reader, Eve, who disagrees with one of her advices. This actually leads to a new friendship between the two, which will challenge not only Peyton but Eve to live their lives fully. As for King, he has his hands full with his son's, David, new vocation. Columnist Peyton MacGruder (Genie Fran-cis) befriends a reader who sent her a note that inspires Peyton to reconsider the choices she's made and her reluctance to accept her boyfriend's marriage proposal. Ted McGinley also stars. Written and directed by Doug Barr.

Faith Like Potatoes: Story of a Farmer Who Risked Everything for God by Angus Buchan

The South African crowd stared in stunned silence as Angus Bu-chan proclaimed to them, "this year we are going to plant pota-toes!" Is he crazy? Despite the crowd's reluctance, Angus Bu-chan knew about something stronger than the impending El Nino drought and mdash;he be-lieved the promises of God. An-gus had a faith like potatoes and mdash;a "real, tangible faith that will sustain us every day." This is a true account of unwavering faith and passion for God's work through one of His most faithful followers.

Faith Like Potatoes Starring: Sean Cameron Michael, Hamilton Dhlamini Director: Reghardt van den Bergh Angus Buchan's award-winning autobiographical novel is adapted for the big screen by director Reghardt van den Bergh, who traces the story of the rugged South African farmer as he endures remarkable adversity on his quest to discover the true power of faith. Set in the tempestu-ous hills of the KZN midlands, Faith Like Potatoes fol-lows Buchan from his early attempts to achieve material success, through the per-sonal transformation that fol-lows a series of seemingly insurmountable losses, and a close friendship forged with his faithful Zulu farmhand. Like the potatoes planet in his field, Buchan's faith re-mains hidden until the har-vest, when he learns how the power of faith can help him to begin the personal healing process, and become more accepting of others. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Complaint of a New Member Anonymous I see you at the meeting…but you never say "Hello." You’re always busy when you’re there…with those you already know. I sit among my brothers and sisters, and yet, I’m so lonesome I could cry. Do all new members feel the way I do…when you old members pass by. You know, when you folks asked us to join…you talked of joy and fellowship. How nice it would be for you to walk across the room…but few ever make the trip. Why can’t you just nod and say "Hello" or stop and shake our hand, and then go and sit with your long-time friends? That I could understand. Oh, I’ll be at the next meeting and a worthwhile time I’ll spend, but just for once, will you introduce yourself? For I want to be your friend. Doing Useless Work Source Unknown

Legend tells of a king who needed a faithful servant and had to choose between two likely candidates. He took both of them on a trial basis and told them to fill a basket with water from a nearby rain barrel, saying he would come in the evening to inspect their work. After dumping several buckets of water into a basket, one of the candidates said, "What is the good of doing this useless work? As soon as we pour water in, it just runs out the sides of the basket." The other candidate answered, "But we have our wages, haven’t we? The use is the king’s business, not ours."

"Well, I’m not going to do such fool’s work," replied the complainer. Throwing down the bucket, he went away. The other candidate continued until he had drained the barrel. Looking into it, he saw something shining at the bottom that proved to be a sparkling diamond. "Now I see the usefulness of pouring water into the basket!" he exclaimed. "If the bucket had brought up the diamond before the barrel was emptied, it would have been found in the basket. My work was not foolish or useless, after all." When God’s blessing does not fully coincide with your expectations, remem-ber to wait until the barrel is emptied. There may be something precious at the bottom.

Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Twenty-Four Consider your own call ... (1 Corinthians 1:26) "I hope that many young men and women, inspired by sincere, apostolic zeal, will consecrate their own lives to Christ and the Church as priests and religious, or as lay people who are also ready to leave their own coun-tries to rush to those places where workers in Christ's vineyard are scarce." --Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day VII

Think About That What is Christ calling you to do? If called, would you be willing to give your life to serve Christ as a priest or a nun or a brother? Perhaps you are being called to work as a lay missionary. Would you be willing to give your life to serve as a missionary, going to places where few would be willing to go? Take Action This week, find an adult whom you respect and trust and schedule a 30-minute meeting with them. When you meet, ask them if they could see you serving Christ as a priest, vowed religious, or missionary someday. Ask what talents or gifts they see in you that could be used to serve others as a Christian. Say A Prayer Dear Lord, help me to be open to your calling. Guide me and lead me to others who can help me figure out how I am called to serve you in my life. Did You Know? The Pope had just one brother, Edmund, who was a physician.

Taken from...My Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. What are You Listening For? Sunday Sermon Masterpiece Collection, Vol. I

It was high noon in midtown Manhat-tan. The streets were buzzing with activ-ity—crowds of people scurrying to lunch, car horns honking, brakes screeching, a siren wailing. Two men were making their way through the throng of noon-time lunch-goers. One was a native New Yorker, the other a Kansas farmer on his first visit to see his city cousin. Suddenly, the farmer stopped and said to the city dweller, "Hold on! I hear a cricket!" His cousin replied, "Are you kidding? Even if there was a cricket around here, which isn’t likely, you would never be able to hear it over all this noise." The farmer remained quiet for a few mo-ments, then walked several paces to the corner where a shrub was struggling to grow in a large cement planter. He turned over several leaves and found the cricket. The city dweller was flabber-gasted. "What great ears you have," he said. "Not at all," the farmer replied. "Your ears are as good as mine. It’s a matter of what you’ve been conditioned to listen for. Here, I’ll show you." Whereupon, he pulled a handful of coins from his pocket and let them clink to the sidewalk. As if on signal, every head on the block turned. "You see," said the farmer, "you hear what you are tuned in to listen for."

PRAYER FOR UNITY 2009

To Our Lord Jesus Christ O Lord Jesus Christ, You prayed on the night of Your Pas-sion That all Your disciples might be one, As You are one in the Father, And the Father is in You. Grant us, Lord, That we may find ourselves in You. Restore and perfect in us Your image And true likeness. Grant us courage to reject The spirit of indifference and mistrust. Open the eyes of our minds and hearts To see Your holy face in each other. May we embrace and celebrate This great gift of Faith Which You have given us. O Lord, all-perfect in Love, Show us the way that leads to Unity; And keep us in Your Holy Will always. We give glory to You, Master and King, Together with Your eter-nal Father And Your most holy, good and life-giving Spirit, Always, now and forever and ever. Amen.
