On Thursday, September 20, a group of young adults and young adults at heart got together at St. Andrew’s parish for a special young adult session of the 100 th Anniversary Mission of the Ukrainian Re- demptorist Fathers. Fr. Maurice Nutt of Tennessee gave an uplifting and energetic talk on being a young person in the Christian World and how to deal with the different pressures around us. This was followed by fellowship afterward. Also at this time, we were formally introduced to the new Redemptorist Young Adult coordi- nator for the Yorkton Province, Dani Brischuk, who will be taking over from Michelle Thiessen who is going on maternity leave. We welcome Dani and wish here all the best and would like to thank Michelle for all here hard work. We offer best wishes as this new chapter in her life begins. On Thursday, September 27 a special Moleben for the Rt. Rev. Mitrat Stefan Semchuk was offered by the UCWLC, UCBC, and UCY at Sts. Peter and Paul parish. This was to honour Fr. Saturday, September 29 was an ex- tremely busy day for the UCY/UCYA. In the morn- ing, Fr. Charles Joanides con- ducted a marriage retreat and workshop at St. Andrew’s parish. He spoke about, among others things, how to keep marriages from failing and identifying a couple’s “arguing style.” The audience was a mix of single and married, young and old and all had a wonderful time. Thanks to Fr. Joanides and Fr. Richard Soo for helping to stage the event and all those who attended. Ten Rules Kids Won't Learn In School via The Prairie Rambler, February 1998

1. Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teenager uses the phrase "It's not fair" 86 times a day.

2. The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as your school does. This may come as a shock.

3. Sorry, but you won't make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won't be a vice president or have a car phone, either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn't have a designer label.

4. If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.

5. Flipping burgers is not beneath dignity. Your grandparents had a

different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity.

6. It's not your parents fault if you mess up. You're responsible! This is the flip side of "It's my life" and "You're not my boss."

7. Before you were born your parents were not boring. They got that way paying your bills and listening to you.

8. Life is not divided into semesters. And you don't get summers off. Not even spring break. You are expected to show up every day for eight hours; and you don't get a new life every 10 weeks.

Page 2

Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult

What’s Up with School? 9. Smoking does not

make you look cool. Watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20.

10. Your school may be "outcome-based,"

but life is not. In some schools, you're given as many times as you want to get the answer right. Standards are set low enough so everyone

can meet them. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life—as you will find out.

Good luck! You are going to need it— and the harder you work, the luckier you will get.

The Dead Church

A new Pastor in a small Oklahoma town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first services. The following Sunday the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the Pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the church was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice said. Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front

of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and in-vited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church. Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead church," all the people eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

The Cleaning Woman There was a little old cleaning woman that went to the local church. When the invitation was given at the end of the service, she went forward wanting to become a member. The pastor listened as she told him how she had accepted Jesus and wanted to be baptized and become a member of the church. The pastor thought to himself, "oh my, she is so unkempt, even smells a little, and her fingernails are not clean. She picks up garbage, cleans toilets - what would the members think of her." He told her that she needed to go home and pray about it and then decide. The following week, here she came again. She told the pastor that she had prayed about it and still wanted to be baptized. "I have passed this church for so long. It is so beautiful, and I truly want to become a member." Again the pastor told her to go home and pray some more. A few weeks later while out eating at the restaurant, the pastor saw the little old lady. He did not want her to think that he was ignoring her so he approached her and said, "I have not seen you for a while. Is everything all right?" "Oh, yes," she said. "I talked with Jesus, and he told me not to worry about becoming a member of your church." "He did?" said the pastor. "Oh, yes" she replied. "He said even He hasn't been able to get into your church yet, and He's been trying for years."

Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Three Set free from sin... (Romans 6:18) "To be truly free does not at all mean doing everything that pleases me, or doing what I want to do... To be truly free means to use one's own freedom for what is a true good." --Pope John Paul II, Dilecti Amici

Think About That As we grow up, especially in our teenage years, we begin to discover more about what freedom means. We get to do things we never could do before. The trap is that we can begin to think that means we can do whatever we want to do. But, if we call ourselves Christians then we must always do what Jesus would do.

Take Action Make ten small cards with the phrase: "Set yourself free. Do something good for someone else to-day!" This week, distribute the cards to ten people you know and ask them to take action on the saying within one week. Tell them it's like their "get out of jail free" card from Monopoly. Say A Prayer Lord, help me to be truly free by doing what you ask of me rather than doing whatever I feel like doing regardless of what it is. Did You Know? The large pointed hat worn by the Pope is called a mitre. It is a ceremonial headdress worn for liturgical celebrations.

Taken from...My Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. • 2 large eggs • 2 cups flour • 1 cup milk • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon vanilla Pre-heat oven to 350° F. Line 2 pie pans with pie crust. I use Pillsbury already made crusts.

TO MAKE CHOCOLATE LAYER: Mix in a sauce pan, the first 3 ingredients; bring to boil and boil 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and cool while mixing the cake batter. This is almost as thin as water but trust me, it thickens while baking.

TO MAKE BATTER: Cream sugar and margarine. Add the eggs till smooth,

FUNNY CAKE (Submitted by Sue) SERVES 12 Sue writes: "This recipe got it's name be-cause the recipe does sound funny and strange but I tell you it is DELICIOUS and you will probably want to make 2 as the first one will go fast. So quick and easy." INGREDIENTS First layer ingredients

• 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup cocoa powder • 3/4 cup hot water Batter Ingredients

• 2 cups sugar • 1/2 cup margarine

alternately add flour and milk. To the last of the milk, add the baking powder and vanilla. The batter will be a little thinner than regular cake batter. Divide the chocolate into the 2 pie crusts. Pour the batter on top of the chocolate. As it pours out and forms maybe a ribbon looking layer, just smooth batter over the chocolate completely before baking. Bake about 40 minutes or until the top of the cake is a light golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Notes: This is a real yummy cake. You can substitute the whole 1/2 cup margarine with only a 1/4 cup of the fat free lighter bake you can find in the grocery stores and the eggs with egg scramblers and the milk with skim milk to make a very low fat recipe of it and it doesn't change the flavor at all. This also freezes very well. Great if you are a "chocoholic" like I am.

Enjoy!

We are not put on this earth to see through each other, but to see

each other through.

Everything I needed to know about life, I learned from a jigsaw puzzle

• Don’t force a fit. If something is meant to be, it will come together naturally. • When things aren’t going so well, take a break. Everything will look different when you return. • Be sure to look at the big picture. Getting hung up on the little pieces only leads to frustration.

• Perseverance pays off. Every important puzzle went together bit by bit, piece by piece. • When one spot stops working, move to another. But be sure to come back later (see #4).

• The creator of the puzzle gave you the picture as a guidebook. • Variety is the spice of life. It’s the different colors and patterns that make the puzzle interesting.

• Working together with friends and family makes any task fun. • Establish the border first. Boundaries give a sense of security and order.

• Don’t be afraid to try different combinations. Some matches are surprising. • Take time often to celebrate your successes—even little ones.

• Anything worth doing takes time and effort. A great puzzle can’t be rushed.

"There are two great days in a person’s life—the day we are born

and the day we discover why." William Barclay

"Today, we too rarely practice good manners…When we neglect to require our chil-dren to say thank you when someone gives them a gift or does something for them, we are raising ungrateful children who are highly unlikely to be happy. Without gratitude, happiness is a rare thing. With gratitude, the odds go up dramatically that happiness will be the result." Zig Ziglar
