Almost, Almost FamousDirected by Barry Lank2018, Canada, 78 min

Friday, June 7 / 9 pm Saturday, June 8 / 3 pm & 7 pmSunday, June 9 / 3 pm

June 7 & 8 screenings introduced by Barry Lank.

On a road trip through an alternate universe, where Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison never died, this film explores the lives of three of the world’s top tribute artists, the cost of borrowed fame and the risk of getting ‘lost in the act’. Fifty years after trailblazers like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jackie Wilson defined music as we know it today, three world-class tribute artists carry on their legacy. But what happens when borrowed fame begins to lose its charm? Can they ever find stardom on their own terms? Almost, Almost Famous follows the stories of Texas rockabilly musician Lance Lipinsky as Jerry Lee Lewis, Las Vegas-based R&B singer Bobby Brooks as Jackie Wilson and the “Elvis from Orlando”, Ted Torres, on their “Class of ‘59” cross country road tour. Their intrepid road manager, Marty Kramer, has his work cut out for him as he struggles not only to keep their feet on the ground and the music centre stage, but also to keep the crowds clamouring for more.

Wednesday & Thursday, June 12 & 13 / 7 pmFriday, June 14 / 9 pmSaturday, June 15 / 3 pm & 9 pm Sunday, June 16 / 5 pm & 7 pm

Juliane Sellam is a 77-year-old Parisian astrologer who has lived in the same pre-war apartment in Montmartre for half a century. In this vibrant documentary, which resembles the films of Agnes Varda, Toronto director Sofia Bohdanowicz focuses on Sellam’s daily life over 30 beautifully shot segments, narrated by both Sellam and Bohdanowicz. The matriarch’s life and rich inner world crystallize through her daily rituals of making coffee, applying makeup, and caring for her geraniums. Bohdanowicz captures the minutiae of these everyday acts with skill and humour, showing us that in these seemingly mundane moments, we can find proof of a life well lived. Winner of the Best Canadian Documentary Award by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle and nominated for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Prize by the Toronto Film Critics Association.

Memory: The Origins of Alien Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe2019, USA, 95 min

Tuesday, May 7 / 7 pm

One-night only special engagement. Special Event pricing $10 — no passes.

“Memory is the documentary for the film lover inside all of us.”— Ravi Srinivasan, Hot Docs

How did Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece register itself so deeply in our cultural imagination? With brilliant fervor, director Alexandre O. Philippe uncovers the untold origin story rooted in Greek and Egyptian mythologies, underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon and the dark visions behind the most shocking and unforgettable film in sci-fi history. Like Philippe’s previous film, 78/52, which put the iconic shower scene from Psycho under a microscope, Memory: The Origins of Alien is a substantial collection of in-depth interviews, original story notes, rejected concepts and unreleased behind-the-scenes footage that will rouse even the casual fan.

Alien (New 4K Restoration)Directed by Ridley Scott1979, USA, 117 min

Tuesday, May 7 / 9 pmTuesday, May 14 / 7 pmTuesday, May 21 / 9 pmTuesday, May 28 / 7 pm

Ghost Town Anthology Birds of Passage

Wings of Desire (New 4K Restoration)Directed by Wim Wenders 1987, Germany, 128 minGerman with English subtitles

Wednesday & Thursday, May 8 & 9 / 9 pmSaturday, May 11 / 5 pm & 9 pmSunday, May 12 / 5 pm

“Wenders’ Masterpeice! A Visual Tour-De-Force!” — J. Hoberman

“Part romance, part comedy, part meditation on matters political and philosophical, Wenders’ remarkable movie posits a world haunted by invisible angels listening in to our thoughts… A film about the Fall and the Wall, it’s full of astonishingly hypnotic images…” — Geoff Andrew, Time Out (London)

Wings of Desire is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. The late Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high above Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality just to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot by the legendary Henri Alekan, is movie poetry.

Birds of Passage (Pájaros de verano)Directed by Ciro Guerra & Cristina Gallego2018, Colombia, 125 minWayuu, Spanish and English with subtitles

Wednesday, May 15 / 9 pmFriday & Saturday, May 17 & 18 / 7 pm Sunday, May 19 / 3 pm & 7 pm Wednesday, May 22 / 9 pm Saturday, May 25 / 5 pm

From the team that made Embrace of the Serpent, this Colombian crime drama completely reinvents the gangster f ilm. Going back to the roots of the cocaine trade in 1968, when indigenous farmers started cultivating marijuana for eager backpackers, the movie spans 12 years, tracing the incredible influx of money — and violence — as demand for harder drugs takes off. Visually spectacular, the film has a folkloric quality that sets it far apart from traditional genre fare. But make no mistake, this is a film about capitalism, and the way that “success” wreaks havoc with traditional beliefs and customs, tearing families apart and leaving a trail of corpses in its wake. — VIFF

The Juniper Tree

The Juniper Tree (New 4K Restoration)Directed by Nietzchka Keene1990, Iceland, 78 min

Tuesday, May 14 / 9:15 pmTuesday, May 21 / 7 pmTuesday, May 28 / 9:15 pm

Director, professor and Fulbright scholar Nietzchka Keene’s stunning debut feature is loosely based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and stars Björk in her first on-screen performance. Set in medieval Iceland, it follows Margit (Björk) and her older sister Katla as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Photographed on location in the stunning landscapes of Iceland in spectacular black-and-white, The Juniper Tree is a deeply atmospheric film, evocative of Dreyer’s Day of Wrath and Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, and is a potent allegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies.

Amazing GraceDirected by Sidney Pollack & Alan Elliot2018, USA, 87 min

Tuesday, June 4 / 7 pmTuesday, June 11 / 9 pmTuesday, June 18 / 7 pmTuesday, June 25 / 9 pm

In 1972, Sydney Pollack was hired to film the making of Aretha Franklin’s live album Amazing Grace, as she performed with a full gospel choir over two consecutive nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. The concert film was intended to be released alongside the album, but technical issues and contract battles put the film on the shelf. Nearly 50 years later, Alan Elliot has edited the footage into this essential document that showcases the legend at her absolute peak.

True Stories (New 4K Restoration)Directed by David Byrne 1986, USA, 89 min

Tuesday, June 4 / 9 pmTuesday, June 11 / 7 pmTuesday, June 18 / 9 pmTuesday, June 25 / 7 pm

Music icon David Byrne was inspired by tabloid headlines to direct his sole feature film, an ode to the extraordinariness of ordinary American life. The Talking Heads front man plays a visitor to Virgil, Texas, who introduces us to the citizens of the town during preparations for its Celebration of Specialness. Byrne uses his songs to stitch together pop iconography, voodoo rituals, and a singular variety show— all in the service of uncovering the rich mysteries that lurk under the surface of everyday experience.

Safety Last! Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer & Sam Taylor 1923, USA, 80 min

Thursday, May 9 / 7 pm

“Needs to be seen on a big screen with a full house… Lloyd was a master of timing who calibrated each shot to the laughter and gasps of a large public, building crescendos as surely as any great composer.”— Dave Kehr, The New York Times

With its perfectly executed gags and astonishing stunts, Safety Last! is the perfect introduction to the comic artistry of silent comedian Harold Lloyd. A small-town bumpkin trying to make it in the big city finds employment as a lowly department-store clerk. A wild publicity stunt he designs to draw attention to the store results in an incredible feat of derring-do that gets him started on the climb to success.

Kevin has picked some of the Kids’ best sketches and will proudly show them — just don’t boo him when he’s talking.

May/June Staff Picks Director Ciro Guerra follows up his hypnotic feature Embrace of the Serpent with a drug tale set amidst Northern Colombia’s Wayuu people in Birds of Passage. Taking place in 5 chapters from the 1960’s — 80’s this beautifully shot gangster saga is filled with incredible imagery and explosive color. To mark National Indigenous People’s Day we present a program of great work by Indigenous filmmakers in Looking Backward and Moving Forward. And don’t miss the incomparable Amanda Kindzierski introduce new Indigenous shorts in Solid Ground. Finally, in collaboration with the Jazz Festival we have unearthed some rare music gems including a great documentary on the legendary record company Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes. — Dave Barber , Senior Cinematheque Programmer

Here’s a list of reasons why I think you should come see True Stories: 1) David Byrne wears a cowboy hat and drives a privately owned red convertible. 2) It features a fashion show with outfits made from grass. 3) Spalding Gray plays the mayor. 4) There are more than 50 sets of twins in the film. 5) It’s being presented in a brand new 4K restoration and all tickets are $5. — Ryan Steel , Cinematheque Box Office & Projection

May and June offer some tantalizing must-see items. In Bella Ciao!, filmmaker Carolyn Combs and screenwriter Michael Springate (former PTE Artistic Director) deliver an incisive, moving, multi-character portrait of Vancouver’s Commercial Drive. Ridley Scott’s Alien is one of the most chilling horror movies ever made (and will look glorious in the recent 4K restoration). The Winnipeg Underground Film Festival is my favourite local event, a beautifully-curated celebration of avant-garde cinema. — Greg Klymkiw, Executive Director

Wim Wenders’ sensibilities are unmatched, and for that reason among others, Wings of Desire in 4K is a must-see. Beyond that, I am looking forward to the Jazz Film Fest documentaries on M.I.A. and Blue Note records. I will also be attending Iranian Cinema’s Dressage, David Byrne’s True Stories, and especially June’s Secret Cinema on the roof! I’m highly anticipating grabbing a drink and enjoying a hot night curated by Winnipeg’s expert movie lovers. — Omid Moterassed, Cinematheque Box Office & Projection

Some of the most intriguingly-enigmatic films in Canada are being made by Denis Côté. His latest, Ghost Town Anthology, is what the title suggests — a ghost story — albeit with his unique sensibility. Restoration Tuesdays brings back an absolute horror classic with the new 4K restoration of Alien.

If you’re a fan of the film, make sure to catch our special one-night only presentation of Memory: The Origins of Alien, the new doc that tells the story of this watershed film. Feeling Afro Prairie Film Festival withdrawals? We’ve got your fix! What You Gonna Do When the World’s On Fire? is a beautiful and urgent look at Black lives in the Southern U.S. Lastly, Restoration Tuesdays and Jazz Film Fest collide with Aretha Franklin’s finally available much-mythologized concert film Amazing Grace, which is sure to bring even the most hardened audiophiles to their knees. — David Knipe, Cinematheque Manager of Operations & Special Programs

I have no memory of watching Alien, though I know I have seen it many times. The film is the kind of terrifying that causes you to safely parcel it deep away where it won’t plague your everyday thoughts. And although it’s packed away, it begins to seep out. Whether or not we want to, we all know this film through and through. It’s become so deeply embedded in the fabric of our culture that there’s no escape! I can’t wait to finally, properly experience this in a theatre and let a little bit of this perfectly executed slice of cosmic horror leak back into my life. Also, don’t miss our exclusive one night-engagement of Memory: The Origins of Alien! — Jaimz Asmundson, Cinematheque Programming Director
