from Pastor Charlie...

Even now, 15 years after leaving journalism, my go-to books on grammar and writing remain The Associated

Press Stylebook and Words on Words, written by John Bremner, who taught a generation of reporters and editors

at the University of Kansas. Regarding alliteration, Bremner writes: “From the ear of a discerning craftsman,

alliteration, the repetition of the same sounds or syllables, is effective. Often it’s sophomoric, as in this headline:

“Student Spirit Sparkles/As Spring Semester Starts.” … When alliteration is the best rhetorical way to convey a

message, as in some advertising, use it. Otherwise, avoid.”

As we prepare to mark our annual Rally Day Sunday and, two weeks later, the second

year of our Bee the Church mission-project-instead-of-worship workday, we’re playfully

adding an alliteration into the mix. Think of the letter “B:” We’ve already captured the

bee-and-honey image with the extra “e” tacked on to “Be.” This year, we’re adding

another “B:” the Bible, acknowledging the ongoing Bible in 90 Days reading program in

which more than 80 FPC members are participants.

So, continuing with this “B” alliteration, briefly, some background:

On Rally Sunday, Sept. 10th, in addition to offering the usual ministry fair and

regular sign-ups for each committee, FPC members can sign up for various

mission activities on “Bee the Church” Sunday two weeks later – Sept. 24th.

Then, on “Bee the Church” Sunday, Sept. 24th, church members will gather in the

sanctuary, just like on a normal Sunday. Instead of holding a worship service,

though, there will be a short mission prayer, and then members will be dismissed

to “be the church” in person, carrying out committees’ mission projects either on

site or at various locations.

Here’s a list of this year’s Bee the Church projects:

Adult Education: Love, Chloe (“Monkey in My Chair” backpacks)

Children & Families/Youth & Young Adults: Child Advocacy and Parent Services (CAPS)

Congregational Care & Nurture/Deacons: Delivery of gifts to homebound members, and raising money

for Salina Shares, Laundry Love

Social Justice & Mission/Stewardship: Community picnic at Pacific Park

Worship & Music: Worker Bees for members’ work-project requests

Trustees: Grounds work day

Also, to tie-in Rally Sunday, Bee the Church, and the all-church Bible in 90 Days reading program, you’ll note

links to scripture verses at committees’ display tables on Rally Sunday, and each committee’s Bee the Church

project.

It’s important to note that Rally Sunday and Bee the Church Sunday are both designed to be ALL-CHURCH-

MEMBER events, and not limited only to committee members. Everyone – and every age – is encouraged to take

part, and invite others to join in the activities.

Social Justice & Mission/Stewardship Committees

The Social Justice & Mission Committee along with the Stewardship Committee will host a picnic in Pacific Park

(701 W. Pacific) for the community. Hot dogs, chips, and good conversation! All committees are welcome to join

after they wrap up their projects for the day! EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Note: In case of inclement weather, the

picnic will be held in Blair Hall.

Please join the Adult Education & Personnel Committees as we combine our talents to BEE the Church for the Love,

Chloe Foundation. We will again be putting together backpack kits for the Monkey In My Chair Program. Meet us in

the Conference Room on Sept. 24th, as we provide the hands and feet to this very special program. Information can be

found at their website Monkey In My Chair, The Cure Starts Now Cancer Foundation: www.thecurestartsnow.org.

Congregational Care & Nurture & Deacons Committees Laundry Love is about people joining together. Salina Shares believes that through the neutral space of a laundromat,

we can become friends with every guest. Spending time together, encourages us to live simply as neighbors in the

same community. At the heart of Laundry Love is the belief that every human being has tremendous worth, value and

possibility. Laundry love operates at all 3 laundromats in Salina. What happens at Laundry Love? The Laundry Love

initiative helps to wash the clothes and bedding of the low income individuals and/or families throughout our

community. CC&N and Deacons Committees want all of us in the congregation to start collecting quarters, so that we

can truly Bee the Church and contribute our collection of quarters to Salina Shares after Rally Sunday on September

10….and in the weeks that follow. We will have containers for your quarters on Rally Sunday. Let’s collect quarters

for the Love of clean Laundry for all our less fortunate neighbors.

Children, Youth & Young Adult Committee

The Children, Youth, & Young Adult Committee will be collaborating with CAPS again this year. We will be working

with the organization to provide added support to their program. More information about specific details will be

coming soon. We look forward to assisting the Child Advocacy & Parenting Services, Inc.! Please join us!

The upkeep of the grounds around First Presbyterian Church, Salina, takes a lot of work, still, a little extra help is

always appreciated, and we're thankful that some members often pitch in to assist. For Bee the Church Sunday,

Trustees have pledged to work outside to do some grounds work. They hope that others will join them. There's

always something to do!

WORKER BEES READY TO SERVE: DO YOU NEED HELP? In preparation for Bee the Church, the Worship &

Music Committees are hoping to serve church members who are having trouble getting things done. Maybe there is

painting, cleaning or yard work needed. Maybe there are tasks too big or too heavy to get done on their own. Your

assistance is requested in identifying these service opportunities. Please let us know if you or another member of our

church family could use our help by contacting the church office at 785-825-0226 or [email protected]. Pew

cards are available during worship. Please fill out and return to the offering plate or the church office.

Children’s Christian Education (FBI)

Hooray for September! September begins the start of our 2017-

18 Children's Christian Education programs. The Faithful Bible

Investigators (K-5th grade) and FBI-In-Training (2yrs-PreK) will

begin on September 13th at our annual Skating party at Starlite

Skating Rink.

Our August 13th registration night and picnic was a success and we

signed up a number of returning children, as well as some new sweet

faces! Not only was the registration night an opportunity to register for

the children's programs, it was also the start of the B90 program, and a

great evening of fellowship, food, water balloons, horse races, and lots

of laughter. A great time was had by all (and the weather couldn't have

been better)!

Now that we have registrations in hand and lesson plans are prepared, we are excited to begin this

new year! As you may likely know, our children's programs run on Wednesday's from 3:45-

5:15pm with Midweek Manna following with dinner in Blair Hall. Our K-5th grade program takes place

in the downstairs classroom, while the FBI-In-Training crew meet in the nursery.

The fabulous, kind and oh-so loving Sarah Payne and Penni White have stepped

down from the roles as FBI helpers. We are sad to see them go, but with their

changing schedules, we couldn't argue with their decision to depart. Though we

are sad to see them leave, we are excited to announce that Britton Zuccarelli

will be taking on the role of the Children’s Ministry Assistant. She brings so

much energy and passion to FPC and we are excited to have her assisting in

teaching our children.

As always, thank you for the consistent support and love that all of you provide to the Children's

Christian Ed programs. We are thankful for you and look forward to updating you next month on the

start of our programming!

Much love,

Shelby Dickson

Mid-High Youth Group

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 5

As you've likely heard, the format of our youth groups are changing as we transition through the

departure of Tricia as Youth Director and the search for our new Associate Pastor. Thus, in the

meantime, the youth programs will consist of the continuation of the Sr. High Mokas mornings, and the

start of a new Mid-High weekly dinner.

I'm so looking forward to the opportunity to be the Mid-High (6th-8th grade) Leader in this time of

transition. Assisting me through this journey is my husband, Jacob, who is anxious to be able to serve

through our youth, especially since his work schedule does not allow regular Sunday attendance in

worship.

The Mid-High weekly dinners will take place every Tuesday from 6-7 pm beginning on September 19th.

Our first dinner will begin at Blue Skye, but location will likely change based on youth suggestions.

FPC youth are encouraged to invite friends! And, if you're reading

this and know of someone who might have 6th-8th grade youth

interested in participating, please encourage them to reach out. My

contact information is 785-404-7342 or [email protected]. Again,

thank you for this opportunity and we look forward to sharing about

our discussions!

Much Love,

Shelby Dickson

Attention all Sr-High Youth!

HeBrews at Mokas will get perking again, starting Thursday, September 7th, at 6:45 a.m. (ish) to 7:30

a.m. There is at least one new HeBrew, freshman, Randy Graham, (El Dorado High Class of 1968). I

am hoping to have some other freshman join me, along with all our FPC young adults. Dylan Boyd of

KWU, will again be helping out each Thursday morning.

Just a bit about me…I am a lifelong Presbyterian who is reading the Bible from cover to cover for the

first time as a B90 participant. I participated in my first church mission trip since my high school days,

last month. I have been married 43 years to Lisa. We have two grown children, Cole and Laine. We

have lived in Salina for 42 years. I retired from a company I founded, The Mortgage Company, last fall.

Among my likes are pop and soul music, tennis, KU basketball, Mexican food and pizza.

I look forward to getting to know each of you as we meet for caffeine, croissants and Christian

conversation. We will gather to support, encourage and learn from one another, how to apply the

scriptures to the daily events of our lives.

The fun starts at 6:45 a.m. (ish). (Can you have fun that early?) So come and see what’s brewing.

This offer comes with a 90 day money back guarantee. (Oh, scratch that. This is all completely free!)

Adult Education Opportunities

The Adult Education Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month, 5:30 PM in the Hope Room.

Please join us as we develop and lead our Christian Adult Educational Programs. You may email any

suggestions to: [email protected].

The FPC Women’s Bible Study group will begin a new Bible Study group,

beginning October 2nd, brought to us by the PW/Horizons Bible study, and titled

“Cloud of Witnesses, the Community of Christ in Hebrews” by Melissa Bane

Sevier. Please join us on a journey over nine lessons (the first Monday of each

month), as the author invites us to explore major themes found in Hebrews, relate

these themes to other parts of our faith tradition, and tie them together with the

overarching motif of community.

Please email the committee with any questions to [email protected]

or ask the office staff. Let us know if you will be there in the fall and we will put

you on the email list and order you the study guide. We hope to see you there!

Led by Christ, Together in Faith and Love,

We Joyfully Think, Question, Grow and Serve!

Anytime is a perfect time to join Yoga at FPC! It doesn’t matter if you have not joined

this group before, please stop by any Wednesday to stretch those muscles, slow down

and listen to your inner self too. You can join Cathy Hayes and other women and men

for yoga on Wednesdays, 5-6 pm. A suggested donation of $5, but is not required. All

levels of ability are welcome for an integration of body, mind and the spirit. If you

have any questions, email [email protected].

PLEASE JOIN US FOR SOME YOGA @ FPC!

IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO GET INVOLVED!

Calling on all church members with an interest in Adult Education: Do you ever have ideas

about a book study or DVD that you think would be great to study? Have you ever had a

thought about something spiritual that you have learned and want to share with your

church family? Would you like to cover how to cope with life events in a faith-based small

group? Please contact our committee at [email protected] to contribute your

ideas to the upcoming fall schedule. Many church members are participating in the B90

Bible Study Challenge, which runs from August 14th to November 13th. Would you like to

see other educational opportunities at your church during this time frame?? Please send us

an email with your ideas if you want a program along with the B90 Bible Study.

Thank you in advance!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PG. 8

A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the

church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing

systems of injustice across the world. Individual

congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this

Offering to connect with the global witness of Christ's

peace. Mid councils retain an additional 25% for ministries

of peace and reconciliation. The remaining 50% is used by

the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and

justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through

collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.

The Peace and Global Witness Offering will be collected at

FPC on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017.

Envelopes will be placed in the pews on Sunday, Oct. 1st

and 8th. Please give generously.

World Communion Sunday

On October 1st, FPC Salina will celebrate our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and

sisters around the globe on World Communion Sunday. Paul tells us that we are to “discern

the body” when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all

our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration. One is not to go hungry while another is

drunk! (1st Corinthians 11:21). This is scandalous behavior opposed to the way of Christ.

Thus it is appropriate that World Communion Sunday is also a time when we receive the

annual Peace and Global Witness Offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian

practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need.

World Communion Sunday was originally called World Wide Communion Sunday. The first celebration occurred

at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today, World Communion Sunday celebrates unity,

inclusivity and diversity around the world. It also demonstrates that the church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully

shares God-given goods with the world.

Peace & Global Witness Offering

Bible in 90 Days

If you notice a sizable chunk of the FPC congregation – more

than 80 brave souls – looking a little more bleary-eyed than usual

these days, that’s because by the end of September, they will be

halfway through – at seven weeks – the audacious, challenging Bible in 90 Days reading program. As September

begins, B90 participants (if they’re caught up and following the 12-pages-in-45-minutes-a-day assignment) will be

digesting the Old Testament books of Judges and Samuel. Everyone has been enthusiastic, with good attendance at

the five classes scattered through the week.

Please pray for each participant in the B90 program, and offer them some encouragement. You might also ask them

about their experience and what may have changed (in their daily routine, if nothing else.) Just don’t ask about any

details or biblical family trees!

Even if you are not part of the B90 program, the brief silent prayer suggested to participants serves as a reminder

for everyone: “Gracious Father, thank you for the gift I hold in my hands. May your Spirit fill me and interpret your

precious words for me as I read. In your Son’s name I pray. Amen.”

Stewardship 2018

Sunday, September 17, is the kick-off of our 2018

Stewardship Campaign. This year's theme reminds us

that God has blessed all of Humankind with more than

enough and that we are the stewards of God's blessings.

With Pastor Charlie, look forward to exploring:

Invested: More Than Enough – We are invited and

perhaps at times, called to invest our “more than

enough” to bless others in their journeys

Found: More Than Enough – We are all blessed, we

are all claimed, and we are all found in and by God.

Blessed: More Than Enough – God releases us from

the fear of not having enough, of not being enough to

participate in the abundant life revealed in Jesus Christ.

Shared: More Than Enough – We present our lives to

God, in service and in hope, for the building of a just

and redeeming community.

Stewardship packets will begin their rounds on Monday,

September 25, via the Neighborhood Route System –

just like we did last year.

A Message from the APNC

The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee continues to meet

frequently and we are progressing through the steps of the

search process for a new Associate Pastor. Please check the

bulletin board in the middle lobby to review the steps in this

process – there are lots of them and all are very important as

we work to do the best job we can do to find the person God is

calling to partner with us here in our ministry. We are now

reviewing Personal Information Forms of pastors that have

either self-referred or were matched through the Presbyterian

Church (USA) Church Leadership Connection service. We

have reviewed over 80 PIFs so far. We have also done a few

interviews and are working on setting up additional interviews.

We have watched lots of sermons, talked to references, prayed

and talked and laughed over these past seven months that we

have been working. We continue to feel honored by the

opportunity to serve FPC in this way, and we ask that you

continue to keep all of us in your prayers. Please feel free to

speak to any of us about our process.

Midweek Manna Returns!

The Midweek Manna meal and worship service, inaugurated in January, will resume on Wednesday, September 20th

after a summer break. The popular informal service provides a chance for families

to worship together that may not be able to attend Sunday morning because of busy schedules. It incorporates a meal, contemporary music and a short message from Pastor Charlie, often with an interactive element. Midweek Manna is a valuable outreach to families connected to FPC through the childrens’ programs on Wednesday afternoons, as well as to the wider community. This fall, Midweek Manna will be promoted through radio and newspaper advertisements, as well as outdoor banners. The best way to

spread the word, though, is through word of mouth. FPC members: Tell your friends and neighbors to join us on Wednesdays, and give it a try if you have not attended! We’ll also be working on some details of the Midweek Manna meal, including caterers and attendance estimates. Though a $10 donation is appreciated toward the cost of the meal, it is not mandatory. If you wish to offer more support to the Midweek Manna project by either “sponsoring” a week or donating additional funds above and beyond your usual church pledge, call Melanie in the church office.

Watch for this new banner to be on display on both 8th and 9th Streets soon!

Welcome New Member Sam Pridey!

Sam Pridey joined the church August 13, 2017, after transferring from his former church in

Minneapolis, KS.

While in Minneapolis, he completed Confirmation, sang with the choir, designed and built

Vacation Bible School sets, and was on the Missions Committee.

Sam has worked with First Presbyterian Church for the last 20 years, overseeing

FPC's Sunday worship radio broadcast on KINA 910 AM. He takes pride in his service to

the church, ensuring the broadcasted service reaches out to those passing through town and

to the ill and shut-in.

Sam has 2 children and 3 grandsons: Carli, and her husband, Adam, and sons Jonathon,

Jeremiah, and Caleb of Kansas City, Mo; and Louis, and his wife, Rosie of Boring, Oregon.

Sam is very grateful to find a church home where he feels like a part of the family and looks

forward to meeting everyone in the church and strengthen the family ties.

If you are in your “Golden years” and like to

discuss things with your peers, this is the place. We

are the “Coffee Group” and we meet every 2nd and

4th Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in the

conference room off the parlor. We sometimes

have a subject, but we often get way off that

subject, so we sometimes just “wing it;” it is more about the

sharing ideas and thoughts with fellow nicely-aged friends than

sticking to a plan. We have a good time, and we are very

informal. No one has to talk unless he/she wants to. AND we

really do have coffee available! For more information, call Joyce

Pearson, 825-5601. Come join us!
