Nathan Knutson, AIA, LEED APManaging PrincipalNathan Knutson is Managing Principal of VJAA where he has practiced since the firm's founding in 1995. He received his Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and also holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from St. Olaf College. His seventeen years of experience include feasibility studies, master planning, project coordination and management, and all stages of design. In addition to collaborating on the firm's major projects, Nathan is responsible for the office's fiscal management, scheduling, and contracts. His management of the firm and of projects prioritizes design at the highest level. Nathan has been Managing Principal/Project Manager for the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life, the Central Campus Masterplan at Tulane University, the Charles Hostler Student Center at the American University of Beirut, and the St. John's University and Abbey Guesthouse. In 2002, he received an AIA Minnesota Young Architect Award.

Saudi Arabia and largest women-only university in the world - a 2,000 acre campus with 32 million square feet of building area.  The Academic Campus is comprised of 8 colleges and a Student Union with a built area of 6 million square feet.   This new campus, dedicated in May 2011, can accommodate 40,000 students and 20,000 Faculty and Staff.  The University also has a 300 bed teaching hospital and research centers for nanotechnology, information technology, and biosciences, a library capable of holding 4.5 million volumes, a K-12 school for children of the faculty, faculty housing and dormitories, recreational facilities and an elevated train system serving the entire campus.

Poul BertlesenPrincipal, MSAADA ArchitectsFor more than three decades, missionary/architect Poul Bertelsen and his staff at MSAADA Architects have designed and helped ensure the completion of more than 750 projects throughout the world. Hundreds more are in various stages of development. While the functions of MSAADA-designed buildings range from medical and educational to residential, spiritual and cultural, they all strive to improve the lives and preserve the dignity of poor people living in developing countries. Bertelsen s 30-plus-year, multi-million-mile journey began when he was called to leave the comfortable life he was enjoying as a young architect in Denmark to serve as a missionary in Nigeria. It continues through the years he developed and expanded the Architectural and Engineering Department for the Central Office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) to his decision to found MSAADA Architects and serve building projects funded by other European church-related organizations who had unmet needs that were similar to the ELCT’s.

His recent book, Design & Dignity: The Birth and Development of MSAADA Architects, is described as a rare blend of pragmatism, passion, candor, and humor enables him to share the insights and knowledge he has gained from experience in clear, compelling prose.

Micheal Haggansformerly Principal – Flad Architects - Madison formerly Group Vice President - HOK-St. Louis

Since 1980, Michael has worked on the facility challenges of colleges and universities.  He is now an independent scholar studying the facilities implications of the digital transformation of higher education. A licensed architect, Michael has a Masters of Architecture from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  He has led architectural practices serving campuses throughout the US and Canada, and was University Architect at the University of Missouri and University of Arizona.

In addition to campus planning assignments, his major architectural projects include: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank, Center for Ambulatory Care – Washington University Medical Center, Simon Hall – Indiana University, and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Science – University of Alberta. He has taught at the University of Arizona, University of Kansas and North Carolina State, and is now a Visiting Scholar in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota.
