Meeting called to order at 12:07 pm

Minutes of the last meeting (2/13) were approved as pub-

lished in Speed.

Officer Reports:

President's Report: No report.

Secretary's Report: No report.

Treasurer's Report: Kellee reported that the bank balance

was around 13 thousand dollars.

Committee Reports:

Coursing: Russell reported on our upcoming AKC coursing events, which are set for June 22 & June 23rd. Judges will be Justin Dannebring and the Crumes. Events to be held

at CA Jacobs school in Dixon.

Racing: Kellee reported that our upcoming CWA Race Meets are scheduled for June 1 and 2nd. She also re-minded all that our Box Christening and Practice will be

held in two weeks, in Fairfield on April 6th (10-2).

Rescue: Guin reported that rescue Cali is currently being fostered with Kellee, after being fostered for three weeks with Kin and Rick. Cali will be going to her new home hopefully shortly. Nick and Nora are in their new home and

are doing well.

Show: Mary Jean reported that the Del Valle crew has already notified us of the whippet judges for the circuit. Lou Guererro/ Friday; Iva Kimmelman/Saturday (Specialty); Sunday/ Ray Yurick. Next year there will be big changes in how we choose judges for sure, since we are now a con-current specialty held with the Del Valle show, but for now we are in a holding pattern awaiting the new parameters for

picking of our judge.

SPEED/Website: Guin reminded all to submit their cute

whippet pictures for both the newsletter and the website.

Whippetbilia: Marrianne and Emily report further orders

from the website.

Membership: Guin presented applicants Susan Baiata &

Dave Cunha attending their second meeting.

Old business: Logo items: Ed reported that we were able to negotiate a good price due to the volume of orders.

Hopefully will have them by the practice in two weeks.

New business: Brad proposed that event chairs not be able to schedule events except at a general membership meeting. Discussion ensued about this proposal. Guin brought up that the race practice was scheduled after close viewing of the event calendar for Northern California and in conjunction with a notice of the proposed time set for the event via the member's e-list. The e-list has over 60 mem-bers, so many more people saw the proposed date than would ever come to any one meeting, and no one com-plained about the scheduling. This proposal was tabled. Brad discussed the need for immediate trailer storage. Discussion ensued regarding pros and cons or different locales for storage. Brad was empowered to explore op-tions in the East Bay for storage and was empowered to rent a spot. Discussion ensued regarding the weight of the trailer and possible issues with fitting everything in it once we have the new boxes completed, since they are larger than the old ones. It was resolved to clean out the trailer and dispose of broken items at the Race Practice on April 6th. The next meeting of the NCWFA was scheduled for May 19th (Sun.) at the Coyote Hills show in Vallejo. People were asked to note a 10 AM ring time in their entries, so we

will not have to have a late meeting. Brags ensued.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:35PM.

Members Present: Jean Balint, Guin Borstel, Brad

Briscoe, Erin Campbell, Charlotte Fielder, Martha Field-

er, Emily Kunkel, Russell Kunkel, Robert Lattuga,

Marrianne Lu, Andrea Meyer, Ed Odron, MJ Odron,

Rick Ragan, Kim Robinson.

Applicants Present: Susan Baiata & Dave Cunha.

Guests Present: Alisa McCauley, Lorrie Thomas, and

Angie Hagen.

Meeting was called to order at noon. The minutes of the

last meeting were not approved, as they have not yet been

published.

Officers Reports:

President's Report: Brad reported on the Board Meeting

that was held at the National in Oregon. Lots of pending

issues were resolved at the meeting. Brad reported on the

Lure trials in June and whether a Single stake should be

offered. Discussion ensued. It was resolved to hold the

Single stake on one day only (Saturday) to gauge interest

and to have less work on Sunday.

Secretary's Report: No report.

Treasurer's report: Guin reported that she went to the bank

that morning and there was a Fifteen thousand dollar

balance.

Committee Reports:

Racing: Jean Balint reported that all was ready for our

CWA races on June 1-2. She has visited the field and it

looks good. She ordered enough ribbons for two years of

events. The lunch themes for the races are All-American

Picnic for Saturday and Mexican for Sunday.

Rescue: Guin reported that Skoda, who was a lovely 18-

month-old male, fostered by Don & Clay McGuire, has

been in his new home for one month in the East Bay. Guin

thanked Don and Clay for all their help with Skoda. Cali is

in her new home in SF with Helen Hultman and is doing

fabulous. So far in 2013, the NCWFA has rescued five

whippets, and has helped to place two others.

Show: Mary Jean reported that she needs to hear from all

previous committee heads by the end of the week, if the

heads wish to repeat this year. Guin will be soliciting for

trophy donations starting next month.

SPEED: Guin reported that SPEED will be BIG and will be

completed before the end of May.

Whippetbilia: Marrianne reported that at the National, she

sold over $500 of Whippetbilia. Brad thanked Erin for the

use of her Houndtogs booth for the week. Marrianne report-

ed that the white "Run Whippet Run" tee is very slow mov-

ing. Maybe we could use it as a prize for events? It was

resolved for the Coursing and Racing chairs to buy the tees

at cost to use as future prizes. Discussion ensued regard-

ing new designs, styles, etc. Discussion to continue at a

future meeting. Ed discussed the success of the NCWFA

Logo Item members-only sale. We sold over eleven-

hundred dollars worth of logo items and all items are now

paid for and picked up. We may do it again in the Fall.

Lure Coursing: Russell arrived and called for a vote on the

Single Stake for our June events. It was resolved to hold

the Single stake Saturday only. Passed.

Membership: New applicants attending their first meeting

were introduced. The Associate Memberships of Susan

Baiata and Dave Cunha were presented and they were

voted in by the membership present.

Old Business: Brad reported on the new storage for the

ClubTrailer, which is in Martinez. This facility was where the

trailer was purchased from and originally stored years ago.

He got a very competitive rental rate.

New Business: The next meeting of the NCWFA will be

held on Sunday, June 9th at Woofstock in Vallejo. Discus-

sion ensued regarding the new dates and Long Beach

location of the Western Specialty. General dissatisfaction

Spring has sprung with happy NCWFA whippet rescue tales!

Remember Cali? The beautiful young whippet girl who was found on Val-

entine’s Day with a coat on in a yard in rural Linden? Cali spent three very

trouble-free weeks fostering with Kim and Rick in Fairfield. Then all of a

sudden, she decided to jump their backyard fence, not once, not twice, but

three times in one day. This smart girl was scaling the gate to get out, for

reasons known only to her. She never went any where after her jail breaks,

but just wandered around the block looking for her people. After this scare,

Cali went to Kellee’s to be on “lockdown” until a home versed in keeping the

escape artist whippet safe could be found.

After a false start or two towards a forever home, Cali is happily settled in

San Francisco, with Helen Hultman, and whippet brother “Patch”. Helen

had just lost the whippet love of her life, “Pie”, and she and Patch were very

down in the dumps. Helen once had an escape artist whippet, “Sandy”,

whom she kept safe for her whole life, and she was up to the possible chal-

lenges of life with quirky Cali. It was love at first sight for this trio and Cali is

doing wonderfully! She has not even looked at Helen’s (very secure and

very tall) fence, and it is as if she and Patch have known each other forev-

er.

Everyone who meets Cali comments on how calm and beautiful she is, and

she is already a neighborhood star out in the Sunset district of SF.

Skoda is an eighteen-month-old shiny black and white male, who came into

rescue after his young family, who bought him from an internet seller, were

overwhelmed by the demands of three small children and one very active

whippet boy. Don McGuire picked up Skoda and he joined the DSM whip-

pet gang as a foster. Skoda proved to be an active young whippet, full of

energy, which he burned off with daily runs with Don and Clay’s whippets in

the forest near their home in Carmel. After a few weeks with the McGuire’s

Skoda started looking for his forever home. This boy needed an active

home, whippet savvy, and maybe one with kids, since he was great with the

little ones. When we put

Skoda up on the NCWFA

Rescue website the re-

sponse was amazing—

everyone was charmed by

Don’s fabulous photos of

Skoda and there were

more than five great home

choices from amongst our

applicants to choose from.

Skoda is now living with

Camille King, her partner

Rae Lovko, their eleven-

year-old son, and very

large whippet brother

Tony.

The whole gang is living the

life of Riley ( or is it Skoda?) In

El Cerrito. Many, many

thanks to Don and Clay for

taking Skoda into their home

and doing a fabulous job

fostering him!

Little Sierra-Seven is one of our “under the radar” rescues. Back in March,

there was what appeared to be a very young whippet puppy bitch at the

Fairfield shelter. Jean Balint went to check and reported back to say that

the puppy was obviously purebred, and probably around three-months of

age. Even more amazing, the little girl had been found running in a field in

Dixon, with no collar on, and no one had inquired about her in her four days

at the shelter. We immediately made arrangements for the poor little girl to

be released to our Rescue. Meanwhile, Guin had been in discussion with a

very nice family in Vacaville, who were looking for a whippet puppy and had

been unable to find one locally. Guin called Alicia, the Mom of the family,

and asked her if they might be interested in a rescue pup. Of course they

were and the match was made,

immediately upon the pup’s release

from the shelter. Little Seven has

charmed all the Riley’s and they are

already planning on their next whip-

pet! Thanks to Jean Balint for all her

help with this rescue and placement.

Until next issue...

The Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony!

L to R: Kellee Livingston, Rick Ragan, Rick Knutson, Debby Knutson, MJ Odron, Burt Greenspan, Ed Odron,

Marrianne Lu, Jean Balint, Guin Borstel, Robert Lattuga & Brad Briscoe.

On Saturday, April 6th, 2013, the NCWFA celebrated a very special occasion. The inaugural usage of our spectacular new race boxes

was accompanied by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, lots of practice races, a gourmet lunch, and fun. In weather than ranged from rain

showers to blazing sun, the Club had lots of fun and trained lots of dogs and people on how to race. And—the boxes worked great!

9

By Kellee Livingston NCWFA has had our old starting boxes for 30 years and it was definitely time for a new set. We raised money for the boxes by having a garage sale in April of 2011. The goal of the garage sale was to raise money from people, other than club members. Club members donated their unwanted stuff and their time. In the end, we raised over 1700 dollars towards our new boxes while getting rid of a lot of unwanted stuff. Once we had the money for the new boxes, we needed somebody to build them. What to do? Robert Lattuga, one of our club members, said he could build the boxes. Robert, being a thoughtful person, wanted to improve on the boxes he had seen at our race meets. At past race meets, Robert had the honor of keeping his foot on the bottom of one of the box doors in order to prevent the dogs from busting out of the boxes from the back. His goal was to improve the overall strength of the boxes, the individual door structure and the rigidity of the boxes. Because our old boxes were really too small for today’s whippet, not to men-tion for any of the bigger breeds, we took the measurements from the Silken Windhound boxes that the Silken Club had been allowing us to use for our last few meets. Robert went to work on the plans and ordered the wood. Then, Robert and Marrianne began the framing and building of the side panels used to separate each individual box. During this process Guin and I received a text message asking if we know the formula for a trape-zoid. WHAT!! Thankfully Robert & Marrianne figured this type of thing out on their own. The next weekend I had the honor of helping Robert actually as-semble the boxes while Marrianne was off at a dog show. When I arrived at R&M’s, the frame of the boxes was in the garage and the panels ready to install. Robert had already attached the end panel and from there we worked our way to the other end. While helping Robert, I found out that he not only is an expert woodworker but also a wine-maker and lawyer working as general counsel for Leapfrog, the learning company. As we in-stalled each panel, I could see our new boxes coming together. By the time we were two-thirds the way through, Marrianne arrived home with food for us. We sat around and talked about what a great club the NCWFA is and how exciting it will be to have new boxes so that we can have race practice and race meets, without having to borrow other clubs boxes. After a full day’s work for me, and two weeks for Robert, the boxes were put together. It was now time for Marrainne to get painting. She chose a nice buttercup color for the boxes themselves and primary colors corresponding to the blanket colors for the doors. I had suspected that Marrianne might be a perfectionist and indeed she is. Two weekends later, the boxes had been painted to perfection. I picked up the boxes and off we went to the welder. John from John Romanoff Welding took on the front door project. Needless to say, he had never built a door for race boxes, but he was up to the chal-lenge. Brad and I dropped off our old boxes along with my personal practice boxes and John got busy replicating and improving upon what we had. Since John’s shop was just around the corner from my house, I could check on the progress every couple of days. John had fun with the project. One of the challenges we had with the door was to find the right springs so that the door would open up fast enough that the dogs wouldn’t run into it, but not so fast

that the door would pull the boxes off the ground. Luckily for me, I found a company called Lee’s Springs and got in contact with a salesman that could explain to me, in detail, how springs worked and what I needed. We had our box christening April 5th, followed by a very fun race practice and lunch. I want to thank Robert and Marrianne for taking on the race box pro-ject and building the most beautiful race boxes in the US. Within the next few months, we’ll try and get the plans for the boxes and the door up on the NCWFA website, for those people who are interested in the details.

The NCWFA gang’s presence at the

recent AWC National Specialty in

Oregon was felt mightily. We may

not have fielded all that many en-

tries, but percentage-wise, the Club

did very, very well! Among the

best of the best in the breed, the

NCWFA represented BOB, Select

Bitch, breeder of BOW, several

AOMs and class winners, and quite

a number of class placers. In per-

formance events, our members

took home several class firsts in

Obedience & Rally and a competi-

tive placement at the lure trial.

Even in the Art show, the NCWFA

made a splash, with Erin Campbell

winning Best Other Media/3D Item

in show with her mosaic “Dharma”.
