“All the news that’s fit to print…and then some!”

It has been another great two months on the campaign

trail for the NCWFA Crew. We have some great show

wins to report and some stellar performance triumphs, as

    well.

    First up, Sweetie (Ed

    & MJ Odron) won

    back-to-back BOBs in

    Placerville in May and

    was the recipient of a

    Group 3! Sweetie was

    also Select at Woof-

    stock on Friday. Way

    to go Sweetie!

    In June, at the big

    Woofstock shows,

Mason (Andrea Meyer) finished his Championship with a

    bang—otherwise known as a major—and is

now Ch. Priory’s Auld Brass de Sud. Good

    going Mason!

Also at Woofstock, Princess Abby (Angie Ha-

gen) won a huge BOB in a very competitive

field, and also was awarded a Hound Group 3.

Abby’s kennelmate Gibson (Angie Hagen) was

WD for more points at Woofstock. Congrats

    to Abby and Gibson!

Handsome Leo (Charlotte & Martha Fielder)

won his first major at Woofstock. Even if Leo

may not be the brother Charlotte really wanted to win,

Rover thinks this is pretty darn cool!

    Fawntastic Tyler (Angie Hagen) was

awarded WD & Best BBE at the AWC

Western Specialty, gaining a big ma-

jor in the process. Good going Ty-

    ler!

On the racing scene, the amazing

Bolt (Jean Balint) once again won

both of our CWA race meets. At six-

years of age, Bolt is still going strong. And to add to his

laurels, he won third place in the match on Saturday, net-

ting him his first High Combined award. The Club had

several successful FTEs on Saturday, with Natasha (Brad

Briscoe) running in 9th place and winning the match, and

Miley (Julie Nunes) finishing in 13th. On Sunday, Hand-

some Captain (Charlotte & Martha Fielder) ran in 10th

place and won the match, netting him the High Combined

    award for Sunday’s racing.

On the lure coursing front, little Arrow (Frank Herald) fin-

ished his AKC FC back in March!

At our June lure trials Louis

(Susan & Bruce Arnold) came in

third in Open on Saturday for an-

other two points. Only two to go!

    Brother Captain (Martha & Char-

lotte Fielder) was fourth. Mr. Dar-

cy (Frank Herald) picked up an-

other LCX point by topping the

veterans on Saturday, as did Ni-

gel (Jen Haas), by winning the

    Specials. On Sunday, Nigel (Jen

    Haas) again topped Specials, and

was also BOB. Harley (Barbara Lawson) came in third in

open for a point, and Thomas (Marrianne Lu) was just out

of the points in 4th. Great showing NCWFA Team!

    Sadly, little Miley

    (Julie Nunes) had a

    mishap at our Satur-

    day lure trial. She

    must have hit a pul-

    ley, and she ended

    up with a broken

    carpus. Miley is

currently rocking a blue splint and Rover wishes this

    cute girl “Get well soon”!

    And finally, in non-whippet re-

    lated news, Camille Emerson

Kunkel was born on May 30th.

Congrats to Ma & Pa, big sis

    Sophie, and the whippet sisters,

    Momo & Chinook.

    Rover is nosy, but

    she sometimes miss-

    es things. Be sure

to send your news and brags to

    Rover @: [email protected].

Members Present: Guin Borstel, Brad Briscoe,

Patti Clinton, Charlotte Fielder, Martha Fielder,

Jen Haas, Justine Kay, Russell Kunkel, Kellee

Livingston, Marrianne Lu, Ed Odron, MJ Odron,

Rick Ragan, Kim Robinson, Lenore Vogt, Dun-

can Waldrop, Jan Waldrop, Todd Wilhoyte.

Guests Present: JR Gibb & Bethi Carver, David

    Kay, Greg Ragan, Denise Sisneroz.

The meeting was called to order at 9:57 AM.

The minutes of the last meeting (February) will

be published in the next issue of SPEED.

    Officer’s Reports:

President’s Report: Brad recapped our events

coming up in June. We have CWA racing the

first weekend of June, and AKC Lure Coursing

the third weekend, with our next meeting sand-

wiched in between. He also congratulated us all

on a very successful and fun race practice.

    Secretary’s Report: No report.

Treasurer’s Report: Kellee reported that we have

over 21 thousand dollars in the bank. We made

two dollars on race practice, after all expenses

    were taken care of.

    Committee Reports:

Show: MJ Odron reported that our trophies will

be ordered very soon. Show paperwork is in to

the AKC. Guin reported that she will start taking

    trophy donations in July.

Racing: Kellee recapped a great race practice.

We got lots of dogs trained. Our NCWFA CWA

race meets are coming up in two weeks. Check

in at 8 to 8:30. Lunch themes will be hot dogs on

Saturday and Sunday will be Mexican. There will

be a Sprinter Class for whippets who are not

eligible for CWA racing and we will have our new

High Combined award for the dog with highest

allover race and match placements for the week-

    end.

Lure Coursing: Russell recapped our upcoming

June 21-22nd AKC Lure courses. Our judges will

be Sue Smith and Jayme Jones on Saturday and

Kathy Kelly on Sunday. We are looking for a

hospitality person to take care of Sue and drive

her to and from the airport. There is no overnight

parking at the school, but there is RV parking at

the Dixon May fairgrounds, about a mile away.

Rescue: Guin reported on Kindred, an eight-year

-old male who is in need of a new home. Brad

mentioned that he recently had contact with

someone looking for an older dog. Brad will

    contact this person.

    Website: No report.

Whippetbilia: Marrianne reported that we have

had some internet sales. She will have shirts at

our race meets and at lure coursing.

Old Business: Ed passed around a sign-up

sheet for the classic logo items. Brad discussed

adding another lure course to our calendar. Many

of the Northern California lure coursing clubs are

not putting on events and there is opportunity for

a club to add events to the calendar. Discussion

ensued regarding possible open weekends for

lure coursing. Kellee mentioned that the week-

end before GGKC is always a sunny one (third

weekend in January). For 2015, this is January

24-25th. Discussion ensued regarding fields that

may be suitable for the new event weekend,

since we cannot use the Dixon field for more

than two weekends per year. The Hollister field

that is used by MBCA was discussed. Jan Wal-

drop mentioned the horse park in Rancho Mur-

rietta and Kellee discussed the Woodside horse

park. Jan and Kellee will report on these possible

fields at a future meeting. Jen Haas and Char-

lotte Fielder will be taking on the Trial Secretary

job for future lure trials for the NCWFA

New Business: Our next meeting will be held on

Sunday June 8th at the Vallejo fairgrounds, in

    conjunction with the Woofstock show.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:33 AM.

Members Present: Bruce Arnold, Susan Arnold,

Guin Borstel, Brad Briscoe, Patti Clinton, Libby

deMille, Charlotte Fielder, Martha Fielder, Tina

Graham, Jen Haas, Angela Hagen, Justine Kay,

Debby Knutson, Rick Knutson, Russell Kunkel,

Kellee Livingston, Marrianne Lu, Andrea Meyer,

Dina Micheletti, Ed Odron, MJ Odron, Rick Ra-

gan, Kim Robinson, Lenore Vogt, Duncan Wal-

    drop.

Guests Present: David Kay, Bonnie Moore, Lori

    Wilson, London Worden.

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM.

Discussion ensued regarding the fact that alt-

hough the last issue of SPEED has been online

for several weeks, no one has gotten a printed

copy. Guin will contact Donna to see what the

hold up is. A motion was made by Debby Knut-

son and seconded by Jen Haas to accept the

minutes of the last meeting (March) as printed in

    SPEED online.

    Officer’s Reports:

President’s Report: Brad reported that half of our

busy month of June events is over and we will be

starting the second half with our lure trials in two

weeks. He thanked everyone for all their help

with our very successful race meets.

    Secretary’s Report: No report.

Treasurer’s Report: Kellee reported that she has

paid our supplemental insurance for our upcom-

ing events, and we still have plenty of money in

    our coffers.

    Event Reports:

Racing: Kellee thanked all Club members for a

very successful race meet. We ran over thirty

dogs each day and we made almost 800 dollars.

    We will clear

    over five hun-

dred dollars after expenses. Thanks to all our

Club member helpers who worked so hard and

    had such fun.

Lure Coursing: Russell reported on our upcom-

ing weekend on June 21-22 in Dixon. The pre-

mium list is on the website and has been sent

out on Kathy Kelly’s email distribution list. Brad

and Russell will be on the field at six AM. Help-

ers will be needed starting at this time and

throughout the day. Debby Knutson will be in

charge of the potluck and will be sending an

email out this week. Discussion ensued on ho-

tels in Dixon. Mary Jean will be heading up the

check-in team, with help from Andrea & Guin.

Discussion ensued on coursing take down for

the Club trailer and how more people are need-

ed to stay at the end of the event to help with

    takedown, especially on Sunday. Everyone

starts to fade away before BIF and we are al-

ways short of helpers. Duncan Waldrop will

head the “Breakdown Team” with guidance from

Ed Odron. Guin will check the dates on the

website for coursing, as there have been com-

ments made that the dates are incorrect or con-

    fusing.

Rescue: Guin introduced a wonderful res-

cue alumni, Breeze, the whippet puppy,

and his owner Patti Clinton and shared his

story. Guin also told of Kindred, an eight

year old male whippet, who had to be giv-

en up because his owner, a former

NCWFA member, had to move into transi-

tional housing. Kindred is happy in his new

home in the East Bay. Brad was thanked

for all his help with the home check.

Show: MJ reported that trophies have

been ordered for the Specialty. Guin will

start fund raising for trophy donations

shortly. This year we will only have a

    Sweepstakes with our Specialty. Judges

for the rest of the cluster will be Daniel

Augustus (Friday) and Dick Meen (Sunday).

Whippetbilia: Marrianne reported that she sold

$145 worth of items at the CWA races. She will

have full inventory at the Lure coursing week-

    end.

Membership: Discussion ensued on tabling the

new member vote until the next meeting, due to

the fact that SPEED has not yet been published

and we need time for member comment on

applicants. The new member vote was tabled

until the next meeting in August.

Old Business: Ed Odron passed around the

sign-up sheet for orders for the logo items.

New Business: Guin presented that she had

been approached by Dianne Bowen, Show

Chair for the 2016 AWC National Specialty in

San Diego (April 2016), for our Club to sponsor

the Hospitality room for one day during the

event. Our Club did this during the 1998 Nation-

al, which was also in San Diego. We will discuss

this further at future meetings, but the Club

would like to do Wednesday if possible. Guin

will talk about this with Dianne as the event gets

closer. Brad reminded the Board that there will

be a Board Meeting upon adjournment of this

meeting. Our next meeting will be in Dixon, in

conjunction with the Richmond KC dog show on

    Sunday, August 3rd.

Many Brags ensued (Mason new CH, Sweetie

Group 3, Baillie finish, Abby Breed, Natasha

Top Ten racing and 1st in Match, Nigel chased a

cat and got the cops called on him).

The meeting was adjourned at 12:54 PM.

In 2006, Russell and I made a trip down to Santa Barbara to get our first

whippet. It was love at first sight. We selected Chinook, the escape artist,

who had a beautiful color and precocious spirit. We fell in love with her

and took up hobbies that she enjoyed, which included: nice long hikes

and lots of coursing. She was our introduction into the wonderful world

of whippets. So naturally we thought why not get Chinook a companion?

And a year later, we welcomed Momo into our family. Momo is a loving

girl who we refer to as our blonde supermodel. As such, we took up confor-

mation as an activity and now had one dog we considered to be our ath-

lete and another dog we considered as our beauty queen. Momo gave us

an excuse to travel to different shows and take up a new activity with our

dog. Proud to have stuck with it, Momo finished her championship in

    2013.

And now as our family continues to grow, our first two kids (Chinook and

Momo), have adjusted well to having young ones in the household. They

have graduated to a more mature life, now enjoying casual walks along

the Alameda Creek Trail, occasional fine dining and a big backyard to

roam and play in. We are truly blessed to have these wonderful girls in

our lives who bring us continuous happiness and an excuse to get out and

    enjoy the outdoors.

Before I begin my report, I would like thank our Canadian

friends, Barb, Howard, Nancy and Peter for making the long

trip to Fairfield, California to support our CWA race meets.

We always enjoy their visits and appreciate their participa-

    tion.

The race meet went well with 32 adult starters and 4

puppies. I should mention that in our adult starters we had 8

that were first time entered. It pleases me to say that they all

ran clean and showed a lot potential for future events. I am

sure that their owners were very proud of them.

Once again Bolt ran well and took the top spot. Challeng-

ing him all day and finishing second and third were Lucky

and Ceelo. Our beautiful boy from Canada, Marshall ran great

and took fourth place. Three litter mates, all FTE, Ranger,

Whoopi, and Strega, took fifth, sixth and seventh place. An-

other handsome boy from Canada, Pete finished in the eighth

position. Last year's National Specialty winner, Natasha,

made her debut to racing and finished ninth in the meet. Our

final placement in the top ten went to the always consistent

running Donald. It makes me happy to say that six of our

FTE's were in the top ten. The other two, Miley, finished

twelfth and Louis finished sixteenth. I should also mention that

there were five litter mates in the top ten and a sixth litter mate

    was top puppy.

All of our puppies ran clean and showed great enthusiasm

for chasing the bunny. Merry was first, Roarke second, Isa

third and Zenith fourth. The puppy owners should be very

    proud of their youngsters.

Our match was judged by long time Whippet friend, Pat

Mills. Her first place went to beautiful Natasha, second to

handsome Niko, third to the stallion Bolt and fourth to hand-

some dog, Nigel. Because of his match placement, Bolt was

High Score Combined dog in the meet.

Lunch was another culinary delight with lots of wonderful

things to ruin our diet. A big thank you to Val for cooking up all

those yummy brats and hot dogs. They were delicious.

Many thanks go to our NCWFA crew for hosting another

successful event. You all did an incredible job.

Once again we were blessed with beautiful weather for

our second day of racing. We had 29 adult starters, (we

thought we had 30,) and 5 puppies.

Bolt took the top placement but he was strongly chal-

lenged by our second place finisher Ceelo and third place

finisher Lucky. Another hot running youngster, Ranger, was

4th. Fine performances came from Marshall and Harley who

finished in fifth and sixth. Best Opposite Sex and seventh

place was awarded to cute little Whoopi. Arrow, Pete and

Captain rounded out our top ten finishers.

Puppies again put on another fine showing. Newcomer

Kai ran great and took the top spot. He was followed by his

sister Merry in second place. Isa, Roarke and Zenith rounded

    out the top five.

We had a nice entry for our judge Nancy to choose

from. Her final choice was Captain, Milo, Folly and Bruce.

Captain's first place gave him the High Score Combined dog

in the meet. Congratulations to Charlotte Fielder.

Again our participants came through with another won-

derful spread for lunch. My sincere thanks to everyone for

providing us with all that delicious food. I can assure you that

    nobody went home hungry.

I would now like to offer my gratitude and thanks to the

club members who worked so hard to put on these events.

Thank you Kellee for doing another fine job as race secretary

and keeping things moving in a timely manner. Thanks to

Brad and his crew, Ed, Robert, Jen, Rick and Steve. To Mary

Jean and her finish line workers, Guin, Nancy, Lynne and

others who helped, my sincere thanks. David Kay, thank you

so much for bringing your ATV for lure return. Once again it

was a great help in keeping things going smoothly and effi-

ciently. A big thank you to Kim. She did a fabulous job of run-

ning the paddock and the practice. You and all of the above

mentioned did an incredible job in making our weekend so

    successful.

My last thank you goes to all the other members of the

NCWFA who were willing to do any task asked of them in

order to make our race meets go well. It was another week-

end of good sportsmanship, fun and great camaraderie and

that is what makes this club so very special.
