Dear Parents/Guardians, Students & Friends of SFX

A few weeks ago, Professor Andrew Boyle was our Guest of Honour

at the Semester 1, Year 12 Awards Ceremony. Professor Boyle is the

Head of Discipline of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of

Newcastle.

Professor Boyle gave an inspiring speech to the Year 12 students,

parents and staff. He spoke about his journey in life and in particular his

career pathway. He took the time to elaborate on the important

decisions that he has faced at different times in his life. He mentioned

the difficulty he confronted when, at times, he didn’t know exactly what

he should do. He also reflected on those times when he had to weigh-up

different priorities that were important to him.

What became clear during Professor Boyle’s speech was that he was a

person who had a purpose and passion in his life and that he was

prepared to work hard in order to achieve his goals. It was this

determination that guided him during those times of difficult decision

making.

You can see students facing the same difficult decisions as they prepare

to begin their senior studies and later as they prepare to finish their

schooling. Such times can be periods of anxiety and worry. But they can

also be times of excitement and anticipation.

Making difficult decisions is part of life and part of growing up. As a

child our parents made the tough decisions for us. However, being a

responsible adult means that onerous decisions will be part of our lives.

As Michelle Obama recently remarked, “at the end of the day, when it

comes time to make that decision, all you have to guide you are your

values, and your vision, and the life experiences that make you who

you are”.

Eventually important decisions have to be made. This is when it is good

to have confidence in our decisions, trust those who have given us

advice and believe that we can make the most of our chosen pathway in

life. It is also a time when all those endless decisions that we make

every day of our lives will form the basis of the ones that have

significant consequences.

With three weeks to go until our group leaves for Cambodia, there are some

very excited Year 11 students preparing for their journey. They have also been

very busy fundraising for the La Valla School. Our aim is to raise over $5000

for the La Valla Community so that we can pay for their rice for a year.

Thank you to all the people who have bought Entertainment Books and those

who have purchased a Chocolate Freddo (or two!) all funds go straight to La

Valla.

The students have also been busy talking at their local parishes, who have

been very generous with their donations. Here at school the students have

been “manning” the Café on a Wednesday at lunchtime to provide warm

drinks and fresh muffins to many customers. Thank you to all the staff in the

Café who have assisted with this.

A big very thank you must also go to all the families of the students going

who have given so much to enable the fundraising to be as successful as it has

been.

For the eleventh year, St Francis Xavier’s College music students proudly performed on the stage at the Civic

Theatre last week, for the Matinee and Evening Performances of DioSounds 2017. As you can see from the photos,

the students were a wonderful group to work with and their talents and energy were so impressive.

We began with White Cockatoo Spirit Dance composed by Australian Composer Ross Edwards in 1993. The

composer was inspired by the repetition and patterns of the cockatoo. It was performed by Rachael Copas (Year

12 Music Extension) on solo violin and was ‘realised’ with movement by dancer Monique Orlowski (Year 12

Dance).

The second performance featured Year 12 singers with soloist Anna Teixeira and vocalists Charlotte Gapps,

Phoebe Evans, Temarah Smith and Monica Howlett performing a close harmony arrangement of Miley Cyrus’

The Climb.

Reapers by Muse, as our third piece, was performed by Isabella Rendina (Year 11) voice, and Year 12 students

Christopher Turner on Guitar, Max Honeyands on Bass Guitar, Abraham Britz on Drumkit, Megan Purkiss on

Violin and Eulalia Angeli on Saxophone. This was an outstanding performance, full of energy and drive.

The DioSounds Finale, A Head Full of Dreams by Coldplay was performed by Roman Anderson voice,

Christopher Turner guitar, Jake Cragg bass guitar, Benjamin Moonen synthesiser, Christopher Bass piano

and Nicholas Crameri drumkit. These students lead the finale as all students from the eleven Diocesan High

Schools, nearly 350 students in total, joined in the singing and celebrated the end of another year of DioSounds

music performances.

As the College Music Teachers, we are truly proud of our students and we thank them for representing our College

with professionalism, maturity and fine musicianship.

The ATSI students went on a cultural experience to

Murrook Cultural Centre on Friday, 2 June. The purpose

of the excursion was to allow the students to experience

some elements of their culture.

This experience allowed students to discover more about

their cultural background and participate in a broad

range of immersion experiences. These experiences

ranged from discussion related to a broader

understanding of the special relationships ATSI have

with the land, to Aboriginal dancing and learning to

throw boomerangs.

Students were able to discover the purpose and nature

of Aboriginal dance and how it contributed to the

transfer of knowledge about the local region.

The opportunity for the students to visit the Stockton

sand dunes was an exciting experience, even though the

sand dunes provided a real challenge for some of the

students. The experience provided proficiencies in

locating freshwater near to the ocean and discovering

ancient middens. It was interesting for the students to

learn how weapons were made from local rock and how

these rocks were traded up and down the East coast of

Australia long before white man discovered this land.

We appreciate the assistance and support offered by Ms

Cassie Mowbray, Mr Daniel Mitchell and Mr Frank

Hales in making this a really enjoyable and educational

experience.

College St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal 2017

Every day hundreds of people in the Hunter region struggle to provide the necessities of food and proper clothing for

themselves and their family, which most of us take for granted. This winter the College St Vincent De Paul Society

group are holding their annual Winter Appeal from Monday, 19 June, to Monday, 26 June, with the theme ‘Together we

can do heroic things’. Not only our volunteers are heroic in giving their time and effort without expecting any reward or

payment, but those who are seeking to improve their life and make the most in tough economic situations are also heroic.

Together we can achieve basic human rights like food, warmth and shelter for everyone.

Will you stand with us in solidarity to help bring hope, comfort and joy to those less fortunate in our community this

winter?

Donations may include non-perishable foods such as soups, pasta, baked beans, tinned fruit. Warm clothing and blankets

would also be appreciated. These items will be collected during Tutor Group time in the morning, or can be left in the

‘House’ cartons on the left side at the Student Services Office. They will be distributed by the local SVDP conferences

who assist individuals and families in our area everyday.

Thank you in anticipation for your generosity! God Bless each and every one!

College St Vincent de Paul Society – Vinnies Day

Many thanks to all students and staff who supported our

recent Vinnies Day, especially all those members who

did so much work for a great cause. The amount raised

was $1,052.10. This money will be used to support a St

Vincent de Paul Diocesan fund to help needy students in

our schools, to support the education of 2 students from

the Asia-Pacific region through the St Vincent de Paul

Assist-a-Student Program, to assist the Marist Brothers’

school for disabled children at Phnom Penh in Cambodia

and to provide “seed money” for projects sponsored by

the Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity program.

Ben Napoli won the $10 tuckshop voucher for the Best

Outfit in the fashion parade. Other prize-winners were:

Ryan Amon – Most Colourful, Vin Bush – Best Hot

Pants, Joe Delbridge – Best Shoes, Lachlan Jeffrey–

Best Hair, Eilish O’Malley – Most Eye-catching,

Isabella Rendina– Most Stylish and Callum Thomas –
